Well, this worked for me! After trying several times via Apple's website and getting errors, I just downloaded this app to my iPhone and it went through pretty quickly. It didn't ask me what data or messaging plan I wanted, though--I'm assuming that will happen in-store. Got a confirmation e-mail from Apple as well. The price in the e-mail said $699, but I'm also assuming that it will be reduced to $299 once I get set up. Fingers crossed......

+1 Same for me! It didn't work on the App until just a few minutes ago. Got one ordered for both me and the wife! My price said $299 on the reservation but the email said $699. I assume that's for tax purposes and the price will get fixed at the store! Finally!
 
After three hours I was finally successful in completing the process and was able to reserve a 32 GB iPhone 4 for pickup at my local Apple store (Tysons). Whew!!!!! I have the feeling that activation is going to be chaotic on Launch Day so in spite of the reservation I am planning to be at the store very, very early.
 
You can only use the App to reserve a local pickup right? I don't see a shipping option.

Edit: "There was a problem connecting to the server. Please make a reservation at your nearest Apple Retail Store."

Since AT&T is now having a problem, it appears as though the App will only allow reservations.
 
I just did the same thing, after trying all morning online I went through the Apple Store App and reserved my iPhone in less than a couple of minutes.

First few tries, after i entered my phone#, zip, and social, the app just crashed

Now it quickly dumps me on a screen that says "There was a problem connecting to the server" and it offers me a link to setup a genius appointment.

Trying on the website too, but no luck there either. "you're request could not be processed"

Back to it...
 
Just used the App as well and it worked first time no problem, got an e-mail saying it was reserved less than 2 minutes later! USE THE APP!!!!!
 
Just turn it off

It's fundamentally unfair at this point since it's effectively a gigantic lottery of frustration as to who gets to complete their order and who gets to FAIL.

They should just turn the site off and admit that, once AGAIN they failed to plan properly. Just like last time.

The Wheels were still spinning on my mac browser, and the Apple App Store seemed to just quickly pop in and make a reservation in no time. Says they will hold my new iPhone for pickup on the release day. Should probably have a separate line just for reservation pickups.

Sure beats not knowing if I will get one or not.

That only works for reserving a phone to pick up at an apple store. It does not work for pre-ordering one to be delivered to your house.
 
For reservation only.. not preorder.

Yeah, I'm avoiding that reservation option on the apple app, trying only the preorder option. I'm worried about doing the reservation, maybe i should just go for it?
 
I was trying for hours and it kept failing at one point or another. Well, I read that one of the reasons why it kept failing is because you already have an iphone in your cart from one of the previous attempts. I checked my cart and viola! The phone was in there! I went ahead with the checkout process and wrapped it all up in about 5 minutes.

Just thought I'd put that out there.

Hi guys, I'm a noob here, but I registered to post that I tried this at about 12:20 EDT and there was a phone in my cart from attempts I was making as early as 6:00 am (this was the first time I was able to even access my cart, btw). I filled out the credit card info and the order went through smoothly. I've got an order number and everything and am just waiting for the confirmation email. This was at Apple.com and for shipping.

Once I get the confirmation email I'm going to try to cancel my pick-up reservation as it's no longer necessary and it's not fair to have one coming and reserved at the same time.

Perhaps you should try this if you can get into the cart?
 
I got the confirmation e-mail after reserving through the Apple Store app, but it says it's for $599. I guess the app doesn't really check eligibility. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it when I go pick it up.
 
I was getting the ATT verification error for a long time. Sure enough, my iPhone order was already sitting there in the cart on the Apple Site after repeated attempts. I've been trying for about an hour after I quit from early this morning. My order was just placed minutes ago, no troubles at all. Thanks Tony! ;)

It seems to work because it does not verify your eligibility for the upgrade or your current data plan, as my confirmation e-mail listed the price at $699 and no info under data plan. This is probably why it works, because it bypasses AT&T's server.

Shouldn't be a problem, since that info will be verified on pickup.
 
I get the feeling that even with a pre-order or reservation we're going to be waiting a long time to get our hands on our phones on launch day.
 
WTF is the difference between registration and pre-order? One you give your CC info and one you don't? Either way is there going to be an iPhone waiting for me at the store?

Maybe they should shut down the online store and add more capacity then start it back up... all these re-requests are just making it worse.
 
I got the Apple Store App to work but the email does say its 699 which hopefully i'll be able to clear up. I'm trying to get the other phone on my account (my wife's phone, but both are in my name) upgraded as well but the App craps out when i try and book the reservation
