Really??

Boy Genius Report has also heard that AT&T's own internal network has been brought down by the crush.

Is this such a surprise????

Also, all the people complaining about not getting orders through. Is it really a suprise? If you do not want the headaches of a long wait, then don't buy it.

Does it really matter when you pre-order the phone? Will we all still get them on April 24th as long as we pre-order at some point today?

It matters. At some point, they will change your delivery date for weeks down the road (Most likely after 4th of July holiday). People who order one already may be in the same boat because Apple/ATT hasn't realized it yet like for the iPad.

OK, so weirdly, I got an error saying my request couldn't be processed but offered to reserve one at my local Apple Store for the full ($699.00) price. So, what the hell, I clicked "reserve" and now have an email. I'm guessing there'll be one there with my name on it and the Apple kids can do the pre-qualification again and fix the price thing. Fingers crossed. But still trying to reserve a second one just in case.

Possible explanation...

Maybe this has something to do with the error message?

Well, I think Apple will do it this time. They probably will sell 1 Million opening day or opening weekend.

3) Crap, the new iPhone is being released today? I sure picked the wrong day to stop by the Apple Store to pick up a copy of The Sims.

Probably a bad idea on any day since apple sells it for nearly twice the price you can get it for online.

I realize you mean June 24. But there's no way to know for sure how many iPhones Apple has ready to ship to arrive on June 24. They might run out of 16GB, they might run out of 32GB, or both.

I wouldn't be surprised if sometime late today or tomorrow, shipping dates start slipping a bit.

If there's scarcity, it seems most likely orders will be handled first come, first served, and that Apple and AT&T will have handsets before everybody else.

It also seems likely that shipped deliveries will occur before in store pickups -- simply easier from a logistic standpoint (as you can clear more orders per hour boxing em up and letting FedEx deal with the last mile)

Finally -- the cheaper model always sells out first.

All I know is...

...if I don't manage to get in today after having been trying all morning, and find out that come tomorrow they are out of stock and that future orders will be delayed, I will not be a happy camper.

Come on, Apple, seriously?! You didn't anticipate this?!

People waiting in lines in Japan isnt really special, people there wait in lines for EVERYTHING. Its a cultural phenomenon, people there will actually get in lines without knowing what the line is for.

Check Your "Cart"!

I was trying for hours and it kept failing at one point or another. Well, I read that one of the reasons why it kept failing is because you already have an iphone in your cart from one of the previous attempts. I checked my cart and viola! The phone was in there! I went ahead with the checkout process and wrapped it all up in about 5 minutes.

Just thought I'd put that out there.

Just pre-ordered a 32GB one at AT&T. They can take orders but their credit card system is down and they are having to hand-swipe credit cards. It's taking a very long time and the line was long and restless. Also the AT&T workers are going to have to follow up personally for each sale later today. Ouch.

ATT Site worked after 10 min.!

Hey folks, ATT site worked great after 10 min. of "knocking at the door".
Seamless transition with current Family plan. And [they say] it will be shipped to me via fedex. Good Luck!

Yea, Genius, this is a surprise, a surprise that in 2010 Apple is unprepared for the success/demand of their own products. Will the situation resolve itself eventually? Yes of course. Not one single person thinks any differently.

The fact is, now, they are unable to do anything about the demand, and thus result in a botched preorder.

getting through without having to change data plan

i got through at one point on both apple and att's systems. but it kept telling me that in order to proceed, i had to choose a data plan. i am already grandfathered into the $30 unlimited (even though its not really unlimited... but that's a different story) so I purposely did not proceed because i am not giving up my current plan and do not want to go through the headache of trying to be placed back into the unlimited plan if I am actually switched. On the ATT site, it said if I wanted to keep my current plan to choose "existing plan" (or something along those lines - but the option wasn't there and I couldn't go forward until I selected a new data plan, which I didn't do). Did anyone else have similar issues and if so, what did you choose

Going to wait for a white one

I never cared for the previous white iPhones but iPhone 4 in white will look very cool.

Am I wrong to think that if they can't handle the traffic to accept preorders that this does not bode well for at&t's ability to handle the traffic that all these phones are going to create?

Yes I know technically I'm wrong...but its indicative of how underprepared everyone is for these phones and the demand the create

I couldn't agree more. If you can't properly prepare for a pre-order after having 3 years of experience with iPhone users (we want our sh*t ordered at the first possible second and will gripe if the servers tell us we cannot), how are we supposed to trust that you understands our wants/needs from the product.

Honestly, after 3 years of clusterf*cks just trying to get the phone (to say nothing of spotty service et al) I think more and more about going Droid. I know that nothing compares to the Apple Hardware, but with each new hurdle over seemingly simple stuff, I consider it a little more.

finally.

Been trying to order through apple since 8:30 am. Then 10 minutes ago went to At&T and it took 3 minutes. First try :D. Now I just need to order a green bumper and I'll be set. Hopefully pre-orders all get met. At least they'll have somewhat of an idea on the demands they need to meet based on the pre-order sales.

I just went to an empty AT&T store in person, got helped right away, but couldn't order the phone because their own internal systems are not working! Oh well.
