I was trying for hours and it kept failing at one point or another. Well, I read that one of the reasons why it kept failing is because you already have an iphone in your cart from one of the previous attempts. I checked my cart and viola! The phone was in there! I went ahead with the checkout process and wrapped it all up in about 5 minutes.

Just thought I'd put that out there.

You are awesome. My iPhone was just sitting in my cart the whole time. Thanks for the tip!

Been trying to order through apple since 8:30 am. Then 10 minutes ago went to At&T and it took 3 minutes. First try :D. Now I just need to order a green bumper and I'll be set. Hopefully pre-orders all get met. At least they'll have somewhat of an idea on the demands they need to meet based on the pre-order sales.

It sucks because I've been trying the at&t site just as much as the apple site and I haven't gotten through. Im just waiting it out, complaining doesn't do much.

FINALLY, got one reserved at the Apple store near me. Looks like I'll be getting up early that day to pick it up! Keep trying eventually you will get through. I had been trying since 5am to pre-order mine. +1 to the guy talking about buying Apple stock!

LOL @ ATT WS website

I'm just laughing at this point. After 3 hours+ of trying to pre-order, the AT&T site won't even let me log in any longer!! And the Apple site keeps failing on me as well. Maybe it's a sign from above to hold on to my money and skip this upgrade, lol.

If there's scarcity, it seems most likely orders will be handled first come, first served, and that Apple and AT&T will have handsets before everybody else.

It also seems likely that shipped deliveries will occur before in store pickups -- simply easier from a logistic standpoint (as you can clear more orders per hour boxing em up and letting FedEx deal with the last mile)

Finally -- the cheaper model always sells out first.

Question is, what is the arrangement between ATT and Apple? Does ATT have a set lot of handsets reserved (say, for example, Apple promises ATT 100k units by June 20) or are they going to take the two pre-order lists and combine and fulfill in order they were placed? I am assuming the former (a standard arrangement, that assumes a certain % of customers going to each seller) but that will be seriously skewed due to store.apple.com problems. Hopefully Apple will take the latter approach, or seriously bump up the number of units it sends to ATT for fulfillment.

Also have to wonder the number of units promised to Best Buy and Radio Shack (already announcing they will be selling [and pre-ordering] the phones.)

After all, a significant % of the early adopters pre-ordered through ATT out of frustration. (Like me! Ordered at ~11am GMT.)

Would be a great scoop for someone to find a copy of the contract between Apple and the resellers for the iPhone 4 launch.

This is pathetic

I can understand maybe an hour or two of interrupted orders but FFS, going on 4+ here, get your s h i t together!

i got through at one point on both apple and att's systems. but it kept telling me that in order to proceed, i had to choose a data plan. i am already grandfathered into the $30 unlimited (even though its not really unlimited... but that's a different story) so I purposely did not proceed because i am not giving up my current plan and do not want to go through the headache of trying to be placed back into the unlimited plan if I am actually switched. On the ATT site, it said if I wanted to keep my current plan to choose "existing plan" (or something along those lines - but the option wasn't there and I couldn't go forward until I selected a new data plan, which I didn't do). Did anyone else have similar issues and if so, what did you choose

Same issue here. Finally had to drop my grandfathered unlimited plan and accept the 2GB plan (more than enough for my wife) just to secure her new phone. She'll never go over and we'll now save $5 a month, but didn't AT&T say we weren't going to have to give up our old unlimited plan with the new phone.

So tired of the BS hurdles (massive lines, server crashes, after the fact price drops, upgrade eligibility issues, etc.) just to remain an Apple Hardware loyalist. I miss the days when 9 out of 10 people said Apple wasn't for them.

I have a discount texting plan I've had on my account for years that the Apple website won't let me get by with. I was hoping the ATT website might let me get through the process with it, but maybe I'll end up calling or going to a store :-/

Edit: Actually it does seem to be letting me get away with the $30 unlimited data

Blame AT&T

It's gotta' be AT&T's fault for the pre-order misfire.

Of course Apple is perfect. :D

ATT is DOWN

Just came from local AT&T Store..

System processed first upgrade; crashed on 2nd, they took info to call when system came back online; now seems to be crashed again over the phone!

Keep repeating after me:

IT IS FUN BEING AN EARLY ADOPTER!!!

IT IS FUN BEING AN EARLY ADOPTER!!!

No luck so far at either AT&T or Apple sites, and I've been trying all morning. No Apple store nearby, and I really don't want to drag two toddlers to the AT&T store. (They've been watching a LOT of "Sesame Street" this morning!)

I got through the order process once and it gave me a 699 price instead of the 299 even though I am 100% eligible for upgrade. Been trying for 3 hours now to get this completed, fun morning eh?

I have the same problem. I got my 3G in July 2008, the AT&T website and the person at the AT&T store both said I am eligible for the $199/299 price. After 2 hours of trying to order the iPhone 4 via the Apple website, I selected the 16GB $199 model and they said it comes to $599! WTF? It is not allowing people to ship it to their homes anymore, only pick it up at the Apple store on the 24th, an hour away for me. But it didn't ask for a credit card or anything, I just made my reservation. So I'll get it fixed on the morning of the 24th then.

Couldn't they have implemented some kind of queue system so it throttles the number of people simultaneously ordering the phone?

first come first serve.

Apple's site states that pre-orders are on a first come first serve basis. So the later you order it, the later you will be getting the phone. I assume this is the same all round. So you might have better chance at waiting in line at the store, unless you get there too late. I imagine the 32gb will be the first to sell out. So many previous owners want extra space. Especially just considering HD video recording.

Good Point.

Yea, Genius, this is a surprise, a surprise that in 2010 Apple is unprepared for the success/demand of their own products. Will the situation resolve itself eventually? Yes of course. Not one single person thinks any differently.

The fact is, now, they are unable to do anything about the demand, and thus result in a botched preorder.

Good point, so that just means Apple did nothing to "upgrade" their systems for the extra usage on their website.

I've heard this before because it sounds so fimillar, dosen't it? Oh wait, AT&T's upgardes to their network.

So did Steve Jobs step down and hand over the helm to AT&T to run Apple?

Apple store is very responsive for me (even the pre-order iPhone pages). I think AT&T dropped the ball on this one. They weren't prepared for the massive number of eligibility requests that Apple was going to be sending their way.

ATT site down, apple pre-orders hanging

Hehe, this is getting funny.

Apple Pre-Order fails when looking up the ATT Details
ATT Website doesn't work anymore
ATT Representative over the phone: "I am sorry but I can't process this over the phone you can go to the following websites .... bla bla bla unfortunatley ATT website is currently down, but you can try the Apple website"
