I played with Windows Phone 7 on an HTC Surround for the first time today. I love my iPhone and iOS in general, but man, I was very impressed with WP7 and enjoyed it a lot more than I ever imagined. I doubt I'll ever move away from iOS, but if I did (or wanted to try something new), I'd definitely go with a WP7 phone. Microsoft did a fantastic job in revamping their mobile OS and giving users something that didn't follow Apple's grid-based UI.

Always entertaining to see certain usernames always posting anti-Apple comments.

It must just be the iPhone is bad at everything.

You want to see fanboyism at it's best? Just look at these iPhone haters wasting their lives in iPhone forums. LOL.

Anyways I had a few days with the Droid X and I muss say, it's terrible for the non technical folks. I didn't have any guidance on how to use it, it's not very intuitive.

First issue was the camera app. It works great but I wasn't able to silence the camera shutter noise. I went online which wasn't hard to find, and found out that I needed an aftermarket camera app to silence it (retarded). It took me about 10 minutes to find the app store (market, hidden in the app list which itself was also hard to find) which was frustrating because I needed a camera immediately. I seriously wasted about 30 minutes trying to take silent photos. Not intuitive at all.

I also had issues with the bloatware they installed on the phone. Blockbuster? Come on!

On the iPhone, I figured out silencing the camera in seconds.

I also got to play with a HTC surround. I must say, WM7>Android. Much more intuitive but WM7 gets old fast with it's animated menus. Can you turn it off? Those menus take a second or two to load, which gets frustrating really fast. It was cool the first few minutes, but come on. Live tiles are nice, but navigating is still not as intuitive as iOS. I also don't like the threaded-ness of navigating. It's like going on a webpage with one tab open. Going back gets old fast. On the iPhone, it never gets more complicated than homepage to app. The back button always brings you back to the homepage.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

I agree also with consistency. I love the fact that with iOS we can sync all PIM data (calendar, contacts, memos and tasks), music, photos, movies and so on. On Android devices you would need to buy a third party sync solution such as the Missing Sync (and I know this from experience). The iPhone and iOS just excel when it comes to consistency.

Girlfriend has the Fascinate and there's no lag and the swype keyboard is superior to my iP4. That said, I can see what you mean about the ui but there's so many different launchers out there that you can pretty much have it however you want. It's not user friendly though, and I end up doing most of the customization for her.

Haven't played around with WP7, but looks pretty interesting. Probably a year away from being competitive as far as apps go, but Microsoft looks like they've got a very solid base to build off. The Zune integration is tempting.

As far as my iP4, the UI is getting dated for sure. I don't expect Apple to remain stagnate, but the others are catching up.

I still haven't had a chance to play around with a WP7 phone yet, but I have to admit I really want to. I've had a Nexus One and now an iPhone 4 and both are good in their own right.

Microsoft looks like they have done a great job with this OS and only looks like its going to get better. Also interested to see some WebOS devices next year.

Did you ever have the power button issue with your Nexus One? how long have you had it? ^

At least WP7's icons are dynamic- constantly updating.

This is what fandroids don't get. It doesn't matter if "they get sorted out later". It is simply not something Google is good at or cares about: UI/UX. Apple is a design company and user experience is its #1 priority. You don't "sort out" user experience. It is an attitude when you develop things in the first place. It is not something you "fix".

Android will never ever come close to what iOS is now or in the future.

Generally, I'd agree with you.

But there have been a metric crapton of " sorting out" improvements to iOS since the original iPhone was released. Even Apple doesn't get everything right the first time. Copy/Paste? Why would anyone EVER need this on a smartphone?????

Apple doesn't make perfection or there would be no iPhone 4.

It being square isn't the issue. You picked a horrible picture to prove a weak point. How does it being square make it bad? With iOS you're stuck with useless icons that don't show you any information whatsoever. Hell, the Weather app always shows you the same temperature. WP7 shows information in its icons via Live Tiles, and has a much better notifications system. OS-wise, WP7 craps all over iOS in every way. It's smoother than iOS, has better notifications, isn't as locked down, has a more practical home screen, has a better music player, will get Flash support, shows information on the lock screen, has Mobile Office, has a better app updating system as well as a more practical Market app, better social integration, Live integration, etc. Only thing keeping iOS the winner for now is the App Store.

Lol. No copy and paste. Bad Microsoft. The Win7 is a great phone but still a bit behind in many areas vs the iPhone iOS period.

It took 2 years for the iPhone to get copy and paste

Microsoft has already said to expect copy and paste in an update in early 2011.

None.

That's not square, this is square and so bland.

When did I claim to be a professional blogger(lol at being a "professional blogger"), and reviewers offer exactly that a REVIEW, not an opinion, they usually have a very small neutral opinion in the end but nothing sharp.

And please, go ahead and tell exactly what was inaccurate in my "review"... go ahead point it out.

iOS isnt square? Do you need your eyes testing?

I actually just picked up a Samsung Focus (WP7) yesterday. In my honest opinion, its the most iPhone like experience you will get. You hear the name "Windows Phone 7" and for most, it stirs up bad memories of that garbage MS used to make. But lets be honest, MS is doing right recently. Xbox is a great gaming console and offers a nice user experience (and Kinect, that thing really has potential to tap into). The Zune is also a nice product, especially Zune Pass. Then they came out with Windows 7 and its like really, you guys made an OS that works well and isn't such a pain in the butt to use? I use W7 at work and on my home PC, and I like it a lot.
The Focus is quick, simple to use, has a great display, and one of the most surprising things, the responsiveness of the touchscreen. I am wondering what MS might announce about the phone at CES now that I have used the phone and actually like it.
I love my iPhone 4, had all of the iPhones up until now, but I don't want to be dependent on them just because I tell myself "Its the best phone out there". I also realize that I don't use half of the features of the iPhone, so something like FaceTime, won't be missed.
I welcome the Windows Phone 7, even though I hate the name, and hope MS backs the product with all the money they have. Android is too PC like for me (and its so fragmented, its a very confusing product line), so WP7 really needs to succeed in order to be a viable alternative to iPhone.

HELLO!!! Windows Mobile phones have had Copy and Paste for years! But they decided to DROP IT on their new phone! So what a stupid thing that was. :D

Windows Mobile != Windows Phone 7

It's an entirely new OS and an entirely new platform. The two are nothing alike.

Dude, I don't care if it's a different O/S. If you create one O/S, you expect them to KEEP some of those features in the new one. It is a stupid mistake that Microsoft is known for doing. Trust me I deal with Microsoft almost on a daily basis at work.

As a former iPhone 3G owner, I find the cognitive dissonance of many iPhone users astounding.

brb, installing emulators from the market, browsing my phone's filesystem, and best of all performing WIRELESS syncing....all without needing to root/jailbreak.

iPhone doesn't even have widgets.

oh yeah, since I switched to android I have freed myself from the shackles of iTunes.

iOS is oval not square, you failed Geometry at school didn't you?

I wouldn't say OVAL either. I would go more along the likes of saying it's rounded squares vs squares. It takes more programming to make them like iOS vs the Winodws 7 just a square. Which tells you how much time Microsoft put into their phone.
