That really sucks. My 3G was stolen right off my desk in class and I'm kicking myself for not getting mobile me before it was stolen. I'm still waiting to get another phone and this time I'll get mobile me. Did the police respond yet? Do you have insurance?

That's a serious bummer, I'm really sorry to hear that.

iPhone 4 in the left pocket, snub nose revolver in my right.

And people always say to me "is it really necessary to carry a gun everywhere?"

You never know what's going to happen.

NYC? you'll never get a CCW. And once you get a CCW and buy a handgun, it doesn't stop there. You need training. Go to Thunder Ranch and spend the money to get trained. Its not just carry this tool and you are all set. no way. even if you were armed why risk getting into a gun fight. let them have the i4. A good friend of mine was involved in a gunfight. He has never been the same since. He still carries religiously (and he went to many classes with me to Thunder Ranch) but he's still suffers from panic attacks and PTS sometimes and its been 10yrs since...not to even touch on attorney fees, court, and losing a respectable job. His life changed forever.

If you get your CCW, get a reliable handgun decently priced and spend the rest of that money on a legit CCW class.

And to the OP, so sorry to hear that happened to you. Sucks. But at least you are fine and can learn from this experience. Next time you will have that heightened situational awareness and hopefully prevent anything like this from happening again. Avoidance is key.

I'm sorry this happened to you. This is why I am insured out the ass, homeowners insurance with umbrella policy, and individual insurance/warranty policies on my iphone, ipad, macbook pro, and my two very expensive watches. I live in a crappy area of Atlanta, and I walk around at night. But I always carry a gun, every single time I leave the house. Sometimes, like tonight, I actually carried two guns.

Now for all you gun hating liberals - you see what happens. NYC (and other places like Chicago) have made it virtually impossible for good law abiding citizens to carry a firearm, but yet you see who still has them. The old saying holds true: "If you outlaw guns.... only outlaws will have guns."

Back to topic, check any and all insurance policies you have, get the police involved, get as much documentation as possible including any kind of surveillance from the lobby of the building you live in possibly, and take that to AT&T/Apple and plead your case. Good luck.

Ugh, that's pretty terrible and I bet nerve-wracking. And to think those scum didn't even have an appreciation for the technology they stole!

I was just thinking, OP, and others, may want to look into some sort of insurance so this doesn't happen to you... I got the SquareTrade warranty, which DOESN'T cover theft, as far as I know... but I was looking at these guys, and they apparently do.

I don't know if I would actually switch* since I already got SqTrade, but just an idea for anyone who might be wondering a way not to be stuck in the same situation OP is in. Sorry to hear again OP, I really hope one of those companies cut you some slack.

*(I live in a fairly safe area... and I also have a CCW permit for my area... and I think if I got it stolen I would just give up and get a GoPhone til I could afford a new one)

I'm sorry to hear this happened, however I'm glad you're ok. This is all much too comforting, since I'm living in the Bronx for this year. :-/

No issues yet...yet...

Even as a CCW carrier (usually a Kel-Tec PF-9 or M&P 9mm), I doubt I would have even drawn my handgun in that situation. If they've already got a pistol pointed at you, there's a good chance that drawing yours would get you instantly shot (unless they're toting around an unloaded or replica pistol). You did the right thing by just giving up your belongings and getting out alive. It's just stuff, and it's not worth risking your life.

Agreed.
You shoot them after the crimes have been committed, or at the first opportunity.
The whole point of concealed carry (for me) is having the element of surprise.
That's also why you always, always carry with one in the chamber. (some people actually don't)

Also, theft was not the major crime here. Your life was threatened and in danger, and it was 3 vs 1.
Where I'm from you have full rights to defend yourself completely in this situation, use of deadly force is justified.

It's sad and frustrating that there are areas of this country that don't allow law abiding citizens to protect themselves while punks are running around pulling crap like this. Which exactly why they do it. Because they can. Because they know there is nothing you can do about it.
That's where I feel your pain. Has nothing to do with a phone.

i meant physical description.

Im doing a report for school. Ethnicity?

useless...

they wont be wearing the same clothes they were during the robbery.

and a lot of people fit the description of:

(example)
6'0 tall
white
jewellery
etc

as for the OP, it's good that you're okay but SERIOUSLY, what did you expect from AT&T/Apple? they didn't rob you, they aren't going to compensate you either.

So sorry to hear that you had to go through this. I would've been so scared. I'm glad to hear you weren't hurt.

OP, so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine how terrifying it must of been. Amazed you weren't more scared.

On a related note, I've actually contemplated not getting the white iPhone (the one I want) because I'm afraid it will attract too much attention while out and about. Specifically if I find myself talking on the phone late at night and I'm along walking down the street. I just think someone spotting a white iPhone might be more prone to want to jack it from you.

I brought this up to a friend who lives in Manhattan and he said I was crazy, because so many people rock iPhones there. But the white one is especially attention grabbing. You simply don't see many white cell phones out in public, and if someone spots you talking on one that might trigger a mugging.

Who knows. I just think the white iPhone would bring about more attention if someone spots you talking on it, etc.

You internet tough guys need to get a clue. If someone put a gun to your head and asked for you stuff and you pulled out a gun you'd get shot because now you're endangering their life and they'll feel the need to protect themselves, back. Plus, if someone is desperate enough to run up on you with a gun for a damn iPod they probably don't have much common sense or much to lose and won't care if you're in public. If you're willing to risk your life for a phone you really need to reevaluate your priorities. I'd fight someone for my phone but if they pull out a gun I'm handing it over.

where do you live? bronx? lol

You didn't address me, but as someone stated, criminals may target nice areas.

I was on my iP4 yesterday right outside of my (luxury) building when some weirdo came up to me, reached in his bag and pulled out a mirror and camera to take my picture. But he could have taken anything out of that bag. He kept talking to me despite my being on the phone. Then he left and came back. But that's NY for ya.

Yes I would in his situation, the criminals aren't stupid there not going to kill you they will like shoot you in the foot. If the guy came fro me behind and put the gun to my head I wouldn't be to ready to fight but I would try something like the phone won't work without the code (something stupid like that). But if they came and confronted me I would hand him my phone and at the same time kick the guy in the balls and then when he goes down rock him in the chin. Then pick up his gun and soot his accomplesses in the foot (if they don't get me first). Also he said it was a public area his lobby so they probably would rather beat the Shiz out of me or stab me, they don't want to make a scene. For me I wolud do a quck (and probably not accurate) analysis of the surcumstances of how I was getting robbed and fight or not fight depending on the situation. But I feel for this guy my friend got robbed the other day, they came from behind and just knocked him out and stole his droid. If I were am man that actualy followed what I preached I would say: rule #9 always carry a knife(NCIS)lol.

Sure you would Rambo. If you fight as good as you spell, just hand the phone over.

I doubt any of us could anticipate what we would do unless put into the situation.

Take your picture? Are you famous???

+1 LCP for me.

Another reason I'd never live in New York, even though I could move there and more than double my salary :( NY Governor would rather let all the criminals walk around with guns and take the guns away from responsible owners.

I've never had a problem in NYC.

That sucks. Seems your doing okay, though. It would annoy me even more that they were too stupid to even know it was an iPhone 4 despite it being the most-discussed device of the past few months. What idiots. I'll keep in mind to choose an apartment with security in the lobby if I ever rent an apartment no matter how much better another apartment without security with a comparable price may seem.

I hope the suspects are at least found. They deserve a long stay in jail along with anybody connected to them. They really seem as idiotic as criminals can get.

I live in a luxury building with a concierge AND a doorman. But it's still NYC, so weirdos are abound. They are in the building as friends of some tenant or they are in the neighborhood walking to the river. They meaning all sorts who are NOT tenants in my area, not 'they' meaning people of color.

In the past, I lived in gated communities in the suburbs. Unlike NYC, those gated communities restricted non-residents moreso from even walking/driving onto the property.

That said, to this comment I see quoted by you, filth comes in all colors. Those who get the greatest shaft in life sometimes unfortunately do the most desperate things. If you choose to paint a group by the actions of the few, that exposes your CHOICE to turn a blind eye to those who don't fit that stereotype, blacks who are AS disgusted by such behavior, criminals of the non-black race and the injustice system.

This theft has more to do with class. The haves and have nots. I have felt less safe in poor white areas vs. predominantly white suburbs. Insert any race, class, a material object of value exposed and opportunity. It's unfortunate.

lucky me, i was robbed on the lobby of where i live by three dudes at gun point, i literally had a gun pointed at my head, they took my iphone 4, wallet and 6 dollars (i don't carry cash).

I am planning on going to the apple store and see what are my options, i have a family plan and i am currently the account holder. I waited 9 hours in line, but i don't really care about the phone or the wallet, the worst thing is that i don't feel safe where a live.

any suggestions?

UPDATE: i was talking to an att rep who basically told me that my best option was to cancel my contract, pay ETF, pay what remains of the phone that i no longer have plus pro-rated usage charges which will send my bill upwards of $900 dollars.

UPDATE X2: apple didn't offer me much help either and instead transferred me back to att who ended up saying that i want an iphone i have to pay the full unsubsidized price plus taxes. Even after i told her about the uncontrollable circumstances.

I will try my luck at the apple store where i originally purchased the iphone, i will ultimately be looking into having the ETF waived.

It happened in your home, you should turn in a claim to your homeowners insurance. If your home was robbed, the insurance would cover it. Technically the lobby of your building is probably considered part of your home. It's worth a try.

Don't worry. Once the robbers come on this forum and read how horrible the iPhone 4 is, they'll return it to you.

You obviously don't have one and simply believe all the BS you read. The iphone4 is hardly a horrible phone by any stretch of the imagination.
