In new york city only criminals can carry or conceal guns, everyone else is just ****ed.
well im sorry to hear that. you said you were robbed in a lobby, (no offense) but the chances are if you were in any sort of public place they wouldn't shoot you. as stupid as robbers are they don't want to get caught. one thing is that since they were guys i would swallow my honor and stab them in the balls with my house keys. and also there is a great chance that you would be near a phone once they ran away or drove off. my friend just also just got robbed but for his droid. they came from behind and knocked him out. but i can only sympathize, as talking about what should of done is not going to change anything.

UPDATE: i was talking to an att rep who basically told me that my best option was to cancel my contract, pay ETF, pay what remains of the phone that i no longer have plus pro-rated usage charges which will send my bill upwards of $900 dollars.
UPDATE X2: apple didn't offer me much help either and instead transferred me back to att who ended up saying that i want an iphone i have to pay the full unsubsidized price plus taxes. Even after i told her about the uncontrollable circumstances.
I will try my luck at the apple store where i originally purchased the iphone, i will ultimately be looking into having the ETF waived.

Do you have homeowners or renters insurance? It might be worth your while to make a claim if you do.
Um, you'd really bet your life on the logical thinking of criminal who pulled a gun on you for a phone and $6?
shame apple dont have a phone recovery squad, where for a nominal fee, they'll track down and recover your phone..... and violate the offenders with a cucumber
Do you have a description of the robbers? Just curious.

OP didn't have MobileMe, but there've been success stories, including one who actually recovered a stolen iPhone using a MacBook to track down but it wasn't someone armed and dangerous.
Pics or it didn't happen.
Wow that sucks so much. This is one reason why I have been telling people to get a plan on their homeowners or renters insurance (about $25 a year) and with a $50 deductible. Not a bad deal... covers stolen property. Definitely cheaper than Mobile Protect or plans like it.
Either way, definitely a sad story!
Atnt/Apple should be able to track the phone.. If you have the box, there are numbers that could be used to track it should anyone try to replace the sim card too.
Who knows though..
email steve jobs?
Sorry, get MobileMe.
