Ok.... I'll be the ******. I call bunk on this story. You must have received a copy of the police report, post that up.

Op's just not convincing me that this event actually took place.

In new york city only criminals can carry or conceal guns, everyone else is just ****ed.

That sucks. Glad you are OK.

First things first, I would move. I may be from a small town in Missouri, but if that happened to me I'd move the next day.

Are tasers allowed in NYC? I'd buy one. And some brass/iron knuckles. Taser the first guy, then hit the second scum bag in the back of the head as hard as you can. Take your iPhone and continue your day.

Even as a CCW carrier (usually a Kel-Tec PF-9 or M&P 9mm), I doubt I would have even drawn my handgun in that situation. If they've already got a pistol pointed at you, there's a good chance that drawing yours would get you instantly shot (unless they're toting around an unloaded or replica pistol). You did the right thing by just giving up your belongings and getting out alive. It's just stuff, and it's not worth risking your life.

well im sorry to hear that. you said you were robbed in a lobby, (no offense) but the chances are if you were in any sort of public place they wouldn't shoot you. as stupid as robbers are they don't want to get caught. one thing is that since they were guys i would swallow my honor and stab them in the balls with my house keys. and also there is a great chance that you would be near a phone once they ran away or drove off. my friend just also just got robbed but for his droid. they came from behind and knocked him out. but i can only sympathize, as talking about what should of done is not going to change anything.

Um, you'd really bet your life on the logical thinking of criminal who pulled a gun on you for a phone and $6?

UPDATE: i was talking to an att rep who basically told me that my best option was to cancel my contract, pay ETF, pay what remains of the phone that i no longer have plus pro-rated usage charges which will send my bill upwards of $900 dollars.

UPDATE X2: apple didn't offer me much help either and instead transferred me back to att who ended up saying that i want an iphone i have to pay the full unsubsidized price plus taxes. Even after i told her about the uncontrollable circumstances.

I will try my luck at the apple store where i originally purchased the iphone, i will ultimately be looking into having the ETF waived.

Dude, I know it sucks but that's how it is for everyone who got robbed and they don't owe you anything.

Purchasing with an Amex card would've taken a lot of the bite out of it. Just be grateful that you're still alive.

Guess MobileMe isn't worth that upwards of $900, right?

OP didn't have MobileMe, but there've been success stories, including one who actually recovered a stolen iPhone using a MacBook to track down but it wasn't someone armed and dangerous.

Yes I would in his situation, the criminals aren't stupid there not going to kill you they will like shoot you in the foot. If the guy came fro me behind and put the gun to my head I wouldn't be to ready to fight but I would try something like the phone won't work without the code (something stupid like that). But if they came and confronted me I would hand him my phone and at the same time kick the guy in the balls and then when he goes down rock him in the chin. Then pick up his gun and soot his accomplesses in the foot (if they don't get me first). Also he said it was a public area his lobby so they probably would rather beat the Shiz out of me or stab me, they don't want to make a scene. For me I wolud do a quck (and probably not accurate) analysis of the surcumstances of how I was getting robbed and fight or not fight depending on the situation. But I feel for this guy my friend got robbed the other day, they came from behind and just knocked him out and stole his droid. If I were am man that actualy followed what I preached I would say: rule #9 always carry a knife(NCIS)lol.

Do you have a description of the robbers? Just curious.

useless...

they wont be wearing the same clothes they were during the robbery.

and a lot of people fit the description of:

(example)
6'0 tall
white
jewellery
etc

as for the OP, it's good that you're okay but SERIOUSLY, what did you expect from AT&T/Apple? they didn't rob you, they aren't going to compensate you either.

Atnt/Apple should be able to track the phone.. If you have the box, there are numbers that could be used to track it should anyone try to replace the sim card too.

Who knows though..

email steve jobs?

Are you kidding me? I KNOW he doesn't have MobileMe. He said in an earlier post that he didn't think it was worth it at the time.

I had my iPhone 3g 16GB stolen from my gym locker in late 2008, and I went to apple to get a replacement. The apple employee helping me called at&t, and they wanted to charge me $200 just for getting the new phone, on top of the price of a new one, which would be $500 total. The apple employee simply said to the At&t guy over the phone: "His phone got stolen, are you serious? We are NOT making him pay that.", and I only had to pay the price for the new phone. I love Apple employees :)

This is why I have the mobile protect plan. Yes if nothing happens, its money gone, but so is insurance you pay on your house and car. To me its worth 12 bucks a month ( a movie or a nice meal ) to have peace of mind knowing that something like this happens to me, Im out just 200 instead of 700.

I dont mind a few extra bucks a month where If something I use every day and rely on wont be a huge expense. two rules in life

1. Accidents and theft happen.

2. There is nothing you can do to change rule 1, but can make it hurt less with proper planning.

Wow that sucks so much. This is one reason why I have been telling people to get a plan on their homeowners or renters insurance (about $25 a year) and with a $50 deductible. Not a bad deal... covers stolen property. Definitely cheaper than Mobile Protect or plans like it.

Either way, definitely a sad story!

you have to weigh in being put into CLUE if you file a claim on your homeowners though. I probably wouldn't touch it unless I was near half or more of my coverage amount.

Sorry to hear about this.
London is just as bad, we seem to have an increase in knife culture.

On a side note, how would having mobileme help?
Can the phone be tracked?

Seems odd that a random guy (you) would be the target of 3 robbers. (unless they knew you had the iphone)

Were you walking and playing with the phone to make yourself a target and be oblivious to your surroundings?

Anyway you mentioned you put it on a CC, just about any card should cover this in the 1st 30 days.

You probably need to file a police report, in fact that would have been my 1st action, not running in to Mac Rumors.
