Photo 1: My speed from Sacramento, CA.

And for giggles, Photo 2 - holding the iPhone on the seams.

Photo 3: You can see a few tests I did holding the phone on the seams (in the middle area), and the tests before and after not holding the phone at the seams.

Huge nerf to my upload speed.

Thanks for posting that. I had previously asked whether users of other devices such as ipads or non-apple iphones were having problems. Unfortunately that post (along with another) was deleted from the thread.

I think non-iphone users should report upload speeds here to compare.

Well you see this issue has actually been happening to me in my market on and off for about 3 months... but it takes 1 million pissed of iPhone 4 users to make headlines :)

My downloads were previously about 1.2-2.6 Mbit, and not about 1.2 on average. I can live with that, it's this upload speed that bugs me. With slower upload comes lower pings which affects interactiveness of data apps, even the web browser that may make 20+ separate connections to load a web page. My pings also increased 100-200ms across the board since Friday.

My uploads were consistently 1mbit+ and now... 90-300 kbit. More on the 90-180 range on average. That's quite a dump.

I do not pay $60 for laptop data plan, I do not deserve upload speed :)

I might just buy the iPhone 4, return it and get a full refund to punish Apple not fixing this problem!

And I encourage others to do the same!

Broken phones like this shouldn´t be sold to people! This is unacceptable!

This is not an iPhone 4 issue.

Again - the widely reported issue is NOT an iPhone 4 issue. So you can mess up your speeds by deliberately doing things to ruin your connection strength - is that a surprise to anyone? Hey, I can put my iPhone in a lead box and it loses all signal - man, design flaw!!!

These network issues are afflicting people who don't even own Apple hardware - this is an ATT issue.

upload "throttling" is a known AT&T issue

Just spoke with AT&T about this issue. They told me that "This is a known issue with the new iOS4 software, and it might be 'fixed' by either a network setting reset or a clean restore of the OS."

FYI, the dslreports app shows no change after reset- 838k-1720kD/L and 39k-62kU/L(!!!) And this with 3.1.3 installed- and then again with iOS4 on my 3GS.

Speedtest app shows 1106kD & 230k U/L before and 1466kD & 232kU/L after. All 3G on a 3GS- but only tested under iOS4.

So there you have one set of observations- in NJ

Just try to send a large photo now as an email attachment! Ugh.

I'm still getting speeds that were normal before I got my iPhone 4.

Last test I did was 3152Kbps down and 233 Up. I usually average about 260Kbps up so it's about right for now.

When I got the iPhone 4, my upload speeds were about 700Kbps for a day or two but the last time that happened was a week ago.

Columbus OH - D 753; U 56. Not what I expected, but I have had 0 issues with my iPhone 4 or the service, so I'm not complaining. I use my wifi if I need speed.

Interesting - an iOS issue that also hits people using Android handsets. And that also started more than a week after iPhone 4 was introduced, but somehow never happened in the months that it was in beta and in Use by developers (like me). And one that materialized for me TODAY on iOS4 while being fine 2 days ago... On iOS 4.

The truth matters.

They're full of sh** then. I just did a speedtest on my iPad (not iOS4, obviously) and got 1065 / 97 -- and 1121 / 97.

When things like this crop up, I wish companies would just be honest. Making it up as you go, or trying to pass the buck elsewhere is stupid.

In Minneapolis, MN these are my results. Note, the one with the low signal strength still gets good results.

i have just tested my iphone 3GS from Greensboro, NC, using Speedtest.net, and I am getting 2465 Kbps down and 265 Kbps up via 3G. However, when I switched to Wi-Fi, I was only getting 900 Kbps down (360 Kbps up). My Macbook sitting right next to my iPhone is getting 10.46 Mbps down and 360 Mbps up over the same Wi-Fi. Why is my iPhone so slow on Wi-Fi?

Wtf?

My download and upload speeds are pretty decent, but can anyone explain why my ping is always through the roof? It's not just at my home, but at work also... Just this general area. Also when I do these tests I'm standing my iPhone 4 upright by itself with no case on it.

This is at home:

At first I looked at your speeds and was like WTF?

Turn off your WIFI and retry, you are getting awesome speeds from your cable/dsl connection!

Wow, people try really hard here. You don't think there's a big difference between 90kbps and 1mbps when uploading a picture (let alone several)?

No, I'm afraid you've missed the point entirely, which is not that it doesn't exist, and not that it isn't noticeable, but that it doesn't matter. Yes, there is a large difference, no, it doesn't matter because you're not doing anything important, you're just wasting time, digitally masterbating. The technology is pretty neat, and it's not like there couldn't be important things happening, like, idk, a medical doctor downloading a chart, then uploading a diagnosis and prescriptions, or first emergency responders uploading location information and victim's injuries, or any number of actually important things that would make a positive difference in some peoples lives. Excuse me for not having any sympathy if your images upload crawls, your YouTube video stalls, your tweet is late, or it takes a few minutes to retrieve your email, but I have this proclivity for putting things into perspective. The issue is so inconsequential that it's hardly worth mentioning. Get over yourselves.

Just did the 'reset network settings'... no change. Upload 65kbps.

Prior to 7/3, all upload tests were > 700kbps. Nothing changed on my phone in the interim. This is not an iOS4 problem.

LOL. Apple blames AT&T for their problems and AT&T blames Apple for this recent one by claiming it to the OS. This is such a healthy relationship.

Well... while you're busy saving the world, I'm paying for a service. And for that cost, I expect my provider to support their end of the contract, just as any 'customer, provider' relationship. This isn't about how we spend our time, it's about expecting to receive the product that's purchased.

hmmm.
this is interesting, My upload is now faster than my download.

Well I personally will do my part to rectify the situation, as soon as VERIZION
gets the i Phone! With 2 iPhones and a $184.96 monthly bill for CRAP service,
THIS boyo is jumpin ship:cool:

I'm with ya!!

ATT service is REALLY bad. I know...I am stating the obvious to many of you. But can someone tell me how this is not a monopoly? From wiki "Monopoly exists when a specific individual or an enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it."

I can't tell you how many times I can't even connect to the App store on my 3GS! Fine, ATT is having growing pains, then pass out the discounts to those who have supported for years now.
