It isn't "my" misunderstanding, it is your miscommunication.

Actually it was your misunderstanding. Nothing in the original post stated that the poster did not want a larger screen. The message merely suggested that some people are placing a very high importance on one specification.

I would be happy with a bigger screen. I wouldn't be too bothered if I didn't get one. I see the screen size as only one of a number of items which make up the attractiveness of a phone and not particularly an important one.

All this german site tells us is that they believe there will be a new model iPhone using the same form factor, thus compatible with existing bumpers for the iPhone 4.

This does not rule out an iPhone 5 using a different form factor, and doesn't really guarantee an iPhone 4S either as it's likely based on rumors.

They're probably going to release a 4s, why cause they can.

When Apple released the ipad and called it revolutionary, I laughed and called it a big iphone, in fact I still don't like the ipad cause it's not a true tablet. It's an iphone with a big screen. Not even a damn usb port, but this thing is selling like mad and I was expecting it to fail. The average user doesn't care about all the extra crap, they just want new.

I'm sure the iphone 4s will sell out like always, but if it's just a speed bump I likely won't be getting it.
I'd rather keep my 3gs or maybe test out an android with a 4" screen.

And I'll buy an ipad when it has a damn usb port so I can actually do more with it than an iphone.

...and what is a "true tablet"? Some half-assed, keyboard-less netbook with WinXP/Office on it? Those before the iPad, and the iPad after them, have proven what a 'true' tablet is. The sad truth is, most people don't give a rat's a** about usb ports, sd card slots, or ctrl+alt+del buttons :)

Those that are attributing the extra 4 months for a refresh to hardware redesign are off base.

I can almost guarantee that the delay in the update cycle is due to architecting and testing the iCloud backend.

We may be gadget nerds/geeks, but Apple is way more excited about this service than a new iPhone enclosure. I believe this is what they consider more innovative than a new form factor, larger screen, etc. Cohesive software and user experience has always been Apple's primary motivator.

In all honesty it wouldn't hurt to change the form factor. It'd make the phone more desirable. I don't under any circumstances want to move away from the iPhone. If it comes down to it I'll have to stay with my 3G it surprisingly hasn't died yet & it's still in great condition!! :D

Guys, keep your hopes up.

I have a feeling iPhone 4S is just an internal code name for iPhone 5 in order to confuse the hell out of us and the carriers. lulz

It's funny to see people saying "oh I expected this." or writing like it's (only 4S is)confirmed 100%.
Has Apple officially posted somewhere that "this yr our new product is this" . ????

And I'm sick of seeing people who still believe there won't be a 4S. There will, clearly.

I'll quote the mathematician in the joke with the physicist and the engineer...

I think the iPhone 4S is all but confirmed. The reliable sources (factories, carriers, iTunes, model designations, etc.) are all indicating that it is the 4S, and the 5 has only been rumored through case manufacturers and some place holder info. I also don't see a scenario where the 4S comes out with an A5, improved camera, and 64GB memory AND a 5 comes out with nothing but an improved case. Where would the pricing go? (Unless Apple has finally adopted my idea of an iPhone Pro line with a nicer case, better camera sensor, 64GB, and bigger screen)

That said, me, and seemingly the rest of the world, were looking for an iPhone 5. I don't discount the huge upgrade that the A5 represents, but a 16 month development cycle for a speed bump? Samsung would be lambasted if the Galaxy S3 was just a speed bumped S2. Why does Apple get a pass?

I just can't see the iPhone owning general public (which far outweighs the mac rumor reading iPhone owners) caring about a speed bump, regardless of how significant it is. And the numbers seem to indicate that a lot of iPhone sales come from existing owners.

In the end, the stock may burp a bit tomorrow after the disappointing announcement, but Apple will soldier on. Because really, they have enough cash to just buy Samsung.

There will be a redesigned iPhone 5 on Tuesday. :)

If there is, I will be shocked. Yeah, like this -->

Again, we're talking about a small bunch of tech heads who really give a toss. The rest (the vast majority) probably don't know the dimensions of the screen. They don't know the PPI. They see the adverts showing them how easily they can do this that and the other on an iPhone and they think "sounds good, I'll have one of those". You can tell them a Samsung Wowza! has a bigger screen or an HTC Kickass has more RAM but they don't care. They don't understand what that means. What they understand is "cool! I can use it like an iPod" and "wow, facetime is really easy!".

This is why Apple wins. They get this but almost no one else does. Amazon are starting to get it too.

Exactly and not only that.

Most people are on 2 year contracts. They only start looking for new info when that contract is up.

The techies who are always looking for the latest and most spec laden phone must have a lot of money to burn to be switching always to the latest.

For most people no need to be in that race.

My 3 GS is getting old, but whatever iphone is next is better than my 3 GS, so I'll buy it for 2 years and then the next iphone will be better and so it will go again and again............

Not pressed for redesign

I will be happy with the just a spec bump if thats the case....I really don't need a larger screen because of my IPad2....if I'm going to watch something I'd rather watch it on my IPad2...rather have faster speed and more ram...not the end of the world if no total makeover announced tomorrow...I think a new design would be good but I have friends that have larger screens and they still rather have an IPad...just my thoughts

Ask yourself what do you really need... Bigger screen? Or the services offered.

DUH!!! bigger screen on which to use the new services more effectively without my finger blocking 40% of the screen and my eyes straining from trying to read smell type on that little screen

I remember people said if the iPad 2 didn't have a retina display it would a fail. "I will move to a TouchPad". "Retina or no sale" How did that end up?

Now they're doing with the iPhone 5 and they will be proved wrong once again.

Apple is losing ground in the smart phone race....if they come out with an iphone 4s and no redesigned iphone 5 after 16 months it will be very disapointing........apple is losing it's touch with reality and basing what they come out with next on cost, they don't care about being first in the smart phone category if they don't come out with a new redesigned one.....disapointing to say the least...

Wouldn't it be "crazy" if no iPhone actually surfaced? All the photos that have been leaked are just iPhone 4's LOL wouldn't that be something. Probably won't happen just a thought.

And most people (not tech geeks) are ok with a smaller screen, I have yet to see a 4 inch Droid that looks semi-usable, or fits a pocket without looking like a freakin' 1980s 'scientific calculator'

then you live in a cave

Current iPhones:

iPhone 3GS 8GB
iPhone 4 16GB
iPhone 4 32GB

I fully expect come tomorrow we will have:

iPhone 4 16GB
iPhone 5 32GB
iPhone 5 64GB

All same price points.

After a 16 month wait (4 months longer than the norm) to do anything else would be just plain WRONG.

mmh, no, sorry :)

...You've just answered your own question. :)

I just can't see the iPhone owning general public (which far outweighs the mac rumor reading iPhone owners) caring about a speed bump, regardless of how significant it is. And the numbers seem to indicate that a lot of iPhone sales come from existing owners.

But this is the 5th iPhone, and the pyramid grows each year... Now there's likely as many people on 3GS-s as there were people on 3G-s last year (perhaps more), and there is also some people yet on 3G-s, and even the eventual MacRumors commenter who is still holding to their original iPhone (kudos to your carbon-footprint, un-materialism or both, seriously).
Seriously, most people can't affor a new iPhone each year.

In the end, the stock may burp a bit tomorrow after the disappointing announcement, but Apple will soldier on. Because really, they have enough cash to just buy Samsung.

That's how gamblers roll... personally, I just want to see what Apple has to offer.

im Prepairing to do the "told you so" dance tomorrow.

i could be wrong, but ive been saying all year that a 4s is all that will happen this year, with a true 5 being next year, heck, im still waiting for the iPad 2s announcement this year.

but i think the "iPhone 5" wedge that has been circulating has a high probability of going to be a new iPod Touch desgin.

I'm ready for the "I Told you so's" too

Heck, I should have take the bet with the guy that wanted to bet his house in Miami!!

I think the "IPhone 5 we saw could be any of these things:

1- A real IPhone 5 Prototype, but for next year, it takes lots more money to create and make the Rounded Edge back than to make the Square Modular IP4 case. The IP4 style case has it's purpose too, it's modular and you can reach the electronics from the front and the back, it is both form and function for service. And I bet soon Apple might be making either Stainless, Aluminum or Lexan Backs for the IP4/4s.

2- And old Prototype that was laying around, it could be for an IPhone, Ipod or IPad Nano...

If this is a IP5 Prototype for next year, by the time it gets produced, I'm willing to bet that the shape will be NOTHING like this prototype!! Trust me, I was involved in the Iridium Sat-Phone development since 1992, the Prototype Handsets I shot back then, were NOTHING like the final working Phones NOTHING!!

On the shape of the case (Curved back) It takes lots of money to make the dies to shape that!! Back in the mid 80's, Speedotron, a Chicago Company that makes Studio Strobes sold it's Professional Line of Studio Strobes, the Black Line with neat Curved Edges. These cases were shaped and made by Zero Haliburton, they make Metal Cases for Camera Gear and other sensitive Gear. Later in the 80's, they went with more "Square" Shaped cases, I asked a Speedo Exec and he told me that they were saving over $200 per case made by going to the "Square" Corners. They were still selling the units for the same price point, so they were literally making almost $200 more profit per unit sold. So, yes, there might be more than one reason for the shape of the phone.

Actually it wasnt. People place a high importance on it because they want it so much.

Your argument is circular - "people highly value the things they highly value".

Someone pointed out that a case design and slightly larger screen do not warrant the level of grief some people are expressing over it, especially in light of other concerns.

That poster never said that a larger screen is not a good thing.

There you go!
