'iPhone 4S' Coming in September With Sprint and T-Mobile Support?

i think iphone 4S is not going to happen.
the 3GS was an anomaly, i'm sure they said they were doing it incrementally from now on. They release new iOS each year , iOS5 this year with a new phone, iOS6 the year after. The 3GS was just to get the software and hardware aligned. Which looks more likely =?

iphone - iOS1
iphone 3G - iOS2
iphone 3GS - iOS3
iphone 4 - iOS4
iphone 5 - iOS5
iphone 6 - iOS6

OR

iphone - iOS1
iphone 3G - iOS2
iphone 3GS - iOS3
iphone 4 - iOS4
iphone 4S - iOS5
iphone 5 - iOS6 ?
iphone 5S - iOS7 ?

No larger screen, no 4G, no 64 GB. The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is looking sweeter and sweeter.

Oh, How Nice, A "Sweet" telephone!!!! Gee, but iPhones are "Delicious" and oh so "Elegant"...

Enjoy your "Sexy and Sweet" Telephone!!! Me??? I kinda rate the ability to make phone and receive calls a slightly higher priority than "Sweet, Elegant, Delicious, Sexy, and Just Gorgeous".......

I don't buy the "4GS" name. Once they committed to the generation numbering system, the next one pretty much has to be iPhone 5. Otherwise they'd have to go 4GS -> 6, which would be very un-Apple like to skip a number, as it will bring mass confusion amongst the non-techy Apple-ites.

Tony

Whole lotta minus points there Tones. 4GS and THEN 5. Mark my words.

It's the right move for Apple

All Apple needs to do this year is bump the iPhone 4S specs and expand the number of iPhone carriers around the world. That's all they need to do to increase their share of global cell phone profits. Apple is already taking 50% of all profits generated by the mobile phone industry. That's all mobile phones, not just smartphones.

But, as we all know, the hardware is the easy part. The real improvement in the iPhone experience this year will come from iOS 5. It takes enormous effort to design, build, and test the software, then to iterate that process until it's polished to perfection. It seems that only Apple actually bothers to complete that process before releasing their software. (At least in the consumer space. I hear Oracle is really good at that too.)

Oh, and there's the small matter of that $1 billion data center in North Carolina. With the extra bonus of deals finalized with the major record labels. Yet more value-add to iPhone that nobody else can provide.

I think this model will be called the 4S but subsequent models will just be called iPhone (mid 2012) etc. There's no reason apple needs to create a new name for each model. MacBook pros and iPods do not need a new namely yearly and I don't think the iPhone or even the iPad needs one either.

This is getting a little out of hand.

First the iMacs become even MORE locked down. (didn't think it was possible)

Now- if this rumor is correct- Apple is telling us that in over a year, they couldn't do anything better than change the processor and camera? :(

AT&T allowed all customers to upgrade 3GS->4 with the fully discounted upgrade pricing (200/300$). Hopefully they will do that again.

If they don't I'll just leave for Verizon. Columbia, SC has LTE now :)

I have to wonder how much of that was AT&T wanting to lock people into 2 year deals with the Verizon iPhone coming. Between the extended early eligibility requirements and the increase in early termination fees, it's become too cost prohibitive for most people to switch carriers in the middle of a contract.

I anticipate a lot of people getting angry when September rolls around and they realize they are still months away from an upgrade.

I don't blame AAPL for waiting on the 4G chips. However, even if it was subpar I don't think it would hurt. I mean couldn't they put it out, and then have a firmware update come later, and change the radio frequency?

Either way i figured a 4GS was coming. Phones technologies seem to out pace the networks upgrading processes anyway. It was bound to happen.

Oh wow... a rumor that actually makes some sense.

I could actually see myself switching to Sprint (if they get the iPhone) in protest of AT&T gobbling up T-mobile... of course that means Verizon will buy Sprint as soon as I switch

they moved up the upgrade date for anyone who was to be eligible that calendar year, not for just anybody. and a lot of people speculated it was a move to block people from leaving en masse to verizon when the verizon iphone was highly rumored to appear. what reason would at&t have now to do the same?

I'd be interested to see if Sprint and/or T-Mobile's unlimited pricing would change with the inclusion of the iPhone. Or will they just up their rates as the big 2 have done, or even take away unlimited.
Of course the pricing is going up. However, they'll probably keep unlimited pricing for a little while to reel people in. Then, like Verizon, they'll adjust the pricing.

So it'll have been at least 15 months since the iPhone 4 and all they're going to upgrade is the processor and camera?

I passed up on the iPhone 4 because I thought the next model would finally provide 64GB, a larger screen, and LTE support, but if none of those are present, I may just have to go for a Samsung Galaxy S2.
:rolleyes:Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Apple didn't offer the 3G capable phone until after AT&T had rolled it out to a number of cities. Considering 4G is still in its infancy, what made you think Apple would jump the gun--especially when it hadn't before?

I'm still waiting for someone to chime in wondering when the iPhone will become available on Boost Mobile, Cricket, MetroPCS etc.
Why would they do that when enterprising people have already gotten it on MetroPCS and possibly Cricket?

Personally, I'm interested in seeing if adding T-Mobile and Sprint means that AT&T's exclusive contract (for GSM phones) is really over. If it is, this'll mean that I can buy a factory unlocked phone and/or AT&T will start offering carrier unlocks. I can only hope

Everyone's so caught up in hardware specs and names. Smart phones are at a pretty happy place right now in respects to hardware so don't you think the wow factor may be in the software this year. I'm exicited for June and think IOS5 and Lion are going to make a big splash.

It makes no sense for Apple to just call it the iPhone 4S, an incremental upgrade apart from the A5 doesn't make sense. I'll be pretty disappointed if the next iPhone doesn't have a larger screen.

I'm still calling it the iPhone 5 until it's released.

A dual core iPhone with a better camera is good enough for me! Maybe a slightly larger screen would've been great, but we'll have to wait and see. As for 4G I can live without because I don't have any 4G reception at my house.

Unrelated to thread topic, but why do so many people refer to Apple as "APPL"? Is it that much more time consuming to type the extra "e"? "APPL" isn't even the stock symbol for Apple, Inc. That would be "AAPL".

What does an oil and gas company have to do with this discussion?

APPL is the stock symbol for Appel Petroleum. AAPL is the symbol for Apple Inc.

:D

I see we were both on that at the same time! :D It actually is a common thing around here to see it, but I'm sure you know that as much as you're on here as well.

Hahahhahhahahha

I've been calling the next iPhone the 4S for six months, do I get any credit?

If it is such a minor update, just release it already and get working on the next one.

I am hating this release schedule.

Since they messed up with the iPhone 4 White, everything gets pushed back so they can make some money back on their mistake.

Yep, that sure is crazy.

Can you imagine a company releasing an minor update and putting an S on the end?

It makes no sense.

Now, where did I leave my iPhone 3GS? Oh, there it is!!!

Its gonna be a an Iphone5...why? Because IOS 5.0 is coming out at the same time...why not have a Iphone 5 phone to match? Especially if its gonna be late and not coming out till september...come on people think....think like apple and not like analysts.

The bigger screen will happen too...and so with NFC chip....

Sorry, I'm calling BS on this- it certainly was NOT 'all customers'... I had paid the $500 price for my 3GS a year earlier on launch day and AT&T told me I'd have to pay the FULL unsubsidized price- $700- if I wanted to upgrade to an iPhone 4. I believe I only just recently hit the point where they'd give the $200/300 upgrade price on a 4.

Hence, why I'm still using my 3GS, and mildly pissed that it'll be another 4 months before I can really upgrade. I'm looking forward to the iPhone 5 (or whatever the heck it ends up getting called), but based on what we're hearing, I would more have liked to have been on an iPhone 4 and then skipped the 5 to wait for a 6 than the current situation.

Two questions for you:

Why was the iPhone 3G called the iPhone 3G?
Why is the iPhone 4 called the iPhone 4?

I really don’t give a crap about the new hardware as I care more about what iOS 5 has to offer. If iOS 5 is junk and the new hardware is subpar I will be in the market for something besides Apple. As much as I absolutely love the iPhone the iOS is getting.... boring
