'iPhone 4S' Coming in September With Sprint and T-Mobile Support?

Sorry, I'm calling BS on this- it certainly was NOT 'all customers'... I had paid the $500 price for my 3GS a year earlier on launch day and AT&T told me I'd have to pay the FULL unsubsidized price- $700- if I wanted to upgrade to an iPhone 4. I believe I only just recently hit the point where they'd give the $200/300 upgrade price on a 4.

That's strange. I got a 3GS on launch week (was a new AT&T customer, moving from Verizon). One year later I upgraded to the iPhone 4 for $199.

The name 4S is absolutely stupid and senseless.

The 3G was the second generation iPhone and brought 3G capabilities.

The 3GS was the third generation iPhone and added the S for speed as in a faster 3G iPhone.

iPhone 4 was the fourth generation and the 4 makes sense.

The next iPhone would be 5. It doesn't make any sense to call it a 4S as if it's a next generation it would be stupid to include a 4. If it were to bring 4G capabilities then 4GS might make sense but most say no 4G until the sixth generation.

I can understand some geeks not understanding how the 3GS came about and failing to understand what the 4 stands for and even calling their iPhone 4 with souped up processor a 4S for test purposes, but there is no way in the world Apple calls its fifth generation iPhone an iPhone 4S. Not going to happen, and anyone who thinks it will happen is not using logic and reason to come to the conclusion it will be called a 4S.

It could be iPhone 5, iPhone 4G/4GS if it has LTE, or another name that makes sense. The dumbest thing I ever read in a rumor was Apple will call the next one the 4S then release the iPhone 5 next Summer. How stupid does that person think Apple is to call a fifth generation iPhone a 4 and a sixth generation iPhone a 5??? It doesn't make any sense from brand positioning which Apple is king at!!!

i think iphone 4S is not going to happen.
the 3GS was an anomaly, i'm sure they said they were doing it incrementally from now on. They release new iOS each year , iOS5 this year with a new phone, iOS6 the year after. The 3GS was just to get the software and hardware aligned. Which looks more likely =?

iphone - iOS1
iphone 3G - iOS2
iphone 3GS - iOS3
iphone 4 - iOS4
iphone 5 - iOS5
iphone 6 - iOS6

OR

iphone - iOS1
iphone 3G - iOS2
iphone 3GS - iOS3
iphone 4 - iOS4
iphone 4S - iOS5
iphone 5 - iOS6 ?
iphone 5S - iOS7 ?

Smartest post in here. If they name it the 4S, I think they would be making a huge mistake. My money is on iPhone 5.

+1

All you people arguing about the whole naming thing are ****ing idiots.

I agree. Maybe people would be happier if they started giving them lame ass names like the Android phones.

Maybe the new one can be the Magical Razzle Dazzle Super Sport.

It's just a freaking number. And letter or two. Don't let it fry your brain.

Yep, that sure is crazy.

Can you imagine a company releasing an minor update and putting an S on the end?

It makes no sense.

Now, where did I leave my iPhone 3GS? Oh, there it is!!!

Never said it's minor, the fact that it will have an A5 chip makes it major, speed is always good. But i was expecting more, like a bigger screen. Maybe back in 09 when Android was just getting started it was fine, but not anymore. I was hoping for a 3.7" screen, just something bigger than this.

iPhone = iPhone 1

iPhone 3G = iPhone 2, emphasizing on 3G network

iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3, emphasizing on Speed. The internals of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are completely different. Marketing wise, it makes no sense to go from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3 as well, hence the name.

iPhone 4 = iPhone 4, biggest upgrade since the original

Therefore, it makes no sense to go to:

iPhone 4S = iPhone 5
iPhone 5 = iPhone 6
iPhone 5S = iPhone 7
iPhone 6 = iPhone 8..

I'm not buying this rumor. I think the analyst was basing it off the developer who just called it "iPhone 4S".
Also, it makes no sense to push the date to September just to release this, so i'm sure we'll be seeing more.

The iPhone 3G name messed up a lot of normal consumers, people thought the "3G" stood for "GB" or "3rd generation iPhone". I doubt Apple will be making the same mistake again.

I think we should drop this naming game, and just stick with "2011 iPhone" or "iPhone 2011" instead.

iPhone 4s

Looking forward to end of my current CDMA contract in Sept. The non-4g iPhone on VZW would be just fine. Battery life on the new crop of 4G phones is reportedly low. 'Old' tech will suffice.

looks like i signed up with my iPhone just at the right time, i can always skip those "S" lines every 2 years and get the complete new one :D

I really hope they don't go with iPhone 4s, and i doubt they will. They've already set up a numerical naming convention and i don't think they'll change it.
iPhone(iPhone 1)
iPhone 3G(iPhone 2)
iPhone 3Gs(iPhone 3)
iPhone 4(iPhone 4)
If we then proceed to iPhone 4s then it'll just get even more confusing to your average consumer
iPhone 4s(iPhone 5)
iPhone 6

It was a bad idea to market the 3G as the 3G in the first place. I know some people were confused when the iPhone 4 came out thinking that it was 4G.

Wrong.

Original iPhone has device ID 1,1.
iPhone 3G is 1,2.
iPhone 3GS is 2,1.
iPhone 4 is 3,1.

This is why the upgrade to 3G was only minor while the 3GS and 4 have been major upgrades with significant spec bumps. and this makes the iPhone 4 actually the 3rd generation iPhone. You can see this in System Profiler or device manager or when you download a firmware file.

Anyways, there's really no reason to number them. They don't number macbooks or iMacs.

I'm sorry - but why does the suffix matter at all to people? It isn't printed on the back of the phone, only on the box.

Actually, other than the doubling of the RAM from the 3GS to the iPhone 4, the internals stayed virtually identical. Same processor (clocked up a bit in the iPhone 4), same GPU. All of the "upgrades" came in the form of external things...the screen, and cameras. The "guts" (what matter to app developers in how powerful their apps can be) stayed the same.

Am I the only one that's mostly anticipating iOS 5 more than anything else?

I honestly don't care (as much) for the physical changes. Bring a better notification system is all I'm asking for. If the speed difference is significant, I'll upgrade as well. I just REALLY hope iOS 5 blows us all away.

I also am more interested in iOS 5. According to the rumors for hardware there is nothing revolutionary for iphone 5/4s/whatever it is called. Most rumors point to evolutionary rather than revolutionary features (larger screen, more RAM, A5 processor).

And anyway I will wait for the next iphone when I can renew my contract, so less interest in this new iphone and more in iOS 5 :)

Another rumor!

If it comes to Sprint...that will be awesome!

It is not going to be called 4S for sure...unlike 3GS, now they can't let consumers think it is a "small" upgrade with Android phones raging.

Oh how I wish daily this rumor to be true! Although a June release is fine by me! I love the iPhone 4 form factor and it means I don't need to change my car holder or charger etc. All I want is the a5 and better camera, and performance to spank the galaxy 2 into oblivion!! I think it will do all that.

Not so sure about a new 64gb model though so it pushes the 32gb down in price..

The lack of 4G is disappointing, but not unexpected. If Apple does not have the parts in the quaintity or quality they need for a release, they will hold off a generation. Better late than garbage.

I think Apple is just following the Tic and Toc model of Intel.

iphone 3, is the invention,
iphone 3gs, is the speed upgrade.
iphone 4, is the invention,
iphone 4S would be the speed upgrade (A5 chips and I can put money on a faster and slicker iOS)

If this is true, a big IF, it is yet another ho hum... yawning Apple evolution. They could squash Android with a great update but it appears would rather continue milking the loyal customers with minimal updates. No bigger screen = minimal excitement.

Well, they COULD, but what would "5" MEAN? It would be a 6th generation phone. You could relate all the other names at least to SOMETHING - i.e. the 3G was actually 3G, the 3Gs was a 3G with a faster processor and the "4" meant 4th generation. Even though "4s" would make sense because it is the iPhone 4 with a slightly faster prcessor, the "5" would mean nothing really.

Tony

I think the real question is...why does it matter?

The iBook was called the iBook throughout the two processor types and clock speed. None of the iPod's have ever had a number system, nor do the rest of the Mac lineup. Somewhere along the way a number system became important for a phone, and now it is moving over to the iPad.
