I just want to chime in on this thread with a huge OMG apple suck so badly. I figured fellow kiwis would be feeling the pain the same.

Seriously? did NZ really pis them off or something, I would have thought apple might appreciate the general kiwi attitude of screw you we'll do it our way. I've been apple user since the late 80's, and I find myself getting frustrated and upset with the lack of apple representation in NZ.

We have 4 million people! we're a big enough market for a store. There should be one in at least the three main centers. I live in Wellington and there must be at least 20 stores within 15 minutes drive of my home that sell apple computers, another 20 on top of that which sell the small items like iPods and iPhones, and 1 dedicated apple store. You can't tell me that a market that is big enough to support that, isn't big enough to support an official apple store.

I get so frustrated when I hear about the amazing service that people get when they take their stuff into the genius bar. We just get screwed over. I had a macbook pro which stopped charging under warranty, I had to take it to the apple authorized reseller, who had their own team look at it. They replaced the charger under warranty and then sent apple the bill. I picked it up with a new charger, I asked about the battery and they said it was all ok....

The MBP was only three months old and I decided to check on the battery myself because I was worried that the charger had been on and off faulty since we got it. I checked the battery cycles and it was at over 600 cycles! on a 3 month old computer, so I rang them up and they said the battery was still ok and they weren't under any obligation to replace it under the warranty. It took three weeks for them to look at it and send it back with a new charger. Really? I knew the charger was the faulty thing to start with.

An apple store would have looked at it right then and there, tested the charger and replaced it, and replaced the battery too (from what I have read from others experiences) . I also recently posted a thread here and on another forum about attempting to fix a broken iPad. Nearly everyone has piped in with "just take it to an apple store and they will replace it for you" no, it doesn't happen that way here, what does happen is you send your apple equipment away to a third party agent, they look at it and then tell you how much they will CHARGE YOU to fix it because obviously a screen won't break unless you dropped it.

I know this is really ranty, and it's such a first world issue I almost feel embarrassed (not quite whitewhine.com worthy though) but seriously? we get sucked into buying applecare warranties when there is no apple to care for us. I guess someone has to pay for all those free replacements they dish out overseas

Oh and on topic, I think all packages cop the gst and duty on them, even if you get it sent in labelled as a gift. With the exchange rates making purchasing overseas a really attractive option they are being even more ocd about catching everything coming in so the chances are even if a relative sends it via post, you will get the extra charges on it. I'm just hoping that my cellphone lasts until they release 4S here. I'm still on the CDMA network (LOL my mac autocorrected that to read coma network) with my nokia 2118, they're closing that down at the end of July next year, so I need a replacement by then

She sounded American. Every time I have called Apple customer service I seem to get an American sounding representative. Never had anyone else.

A couple of months ago I called asking about one of Apples products and he emailed me back telling me he would be my "dedicated and personal Apple consultant".

Creepy ...

Yeah, Apple is actually really popular here. There is potential. They've got more than enough Apple Stores in the U.S, so why can't they give us one for each urban centre (wellington, auckland and chirstchurch)? :( Sucks...

Sorry, but I don't think the iPhone 4S is coming to New Zealand for a while, and when it does it will be strictly 'contract only'. I'm in NZ and I'll be buying the iPhone 4 soon, because its unlocked so I can go on prepaid. Perhaps you should do that too, because it'll be quite a long wait, and when it does come it will be sold out for a while :( Sucks to me an iPhone user in NZ, doesn't it?

Apple said they will see the demand for it in other countries that are getting on the 14th and 28th. Apple said they hope to have it here by the end of the year for Christmas

Coming from the uk

I'm moving out to NZ in a few weeks what is my best iPhone option:

Option 1: Keep the phone 4 I have and get a NZ sim for it when I get there. If so do any of the networks offer sim only contracts, or can you get pay as you go contract that offer good prices on data?

Option 2:sell my phone here and get a new contract and new phone from Vodafone when we arrive. Seems like the expensive option??

Option 3: buy a new 4s and do the same as option 1?

My main concern is, will my iPhone work in NZ, and what sim contracts/ pay as you go options do you have.

Any advice welcome,

David

I'm going to ask a dumbarse question. Despite having used computers for most of my life, I really don't know my way around mobile phones. I still use my nokia 2118 and a $20 prepay top up lasts me several months, unless one of the kids gets hold of my phone when they run out of texts. I never make calls on it, or receive calls.

Can I use an iPhone as a prepay without signing up for a monthly payment plan, and is there something like a prepay plan for the internet use side of things. We currently have the iPad 3g with vodaphone, but it annoys me that most months we only use less than half the 250 mb, so we lose the rest. Does anyone in NZ offer less? I really have no idea how much I would use with an iphone, Wellington and hutt valley has plenty of free wifi spots around. Most of the data + calls + texts type plans are aimed at heavier users than me and are too pricey

So it seems you really have no use for data because of the free wifi hotspots. IMO just don't go for any plan. You can use an iPhone as a prepay indeed. Buy it from Apple Store NZ (online only). Vodafone is a huge rip off.

I'll tell you this. NZ prices for data plans are a rip off.

You can bring your iPhone 4 to here and use it here. You'll just need an NZ sim card.

Vodafone is a ripoff.

No iPhones are locked here in nz.

I do need 3G from time to time though, I resent paying the $20 to vodaphone per month for the couple of times a month when it is needed on the iPad. Hubby uses it for work and it's not something he can make do without, just that I feel like we only use about $5 worth of the $20 monthly plan, and some months he doesn't even use anything at all.

I think we get ripped off all round when it comes to internet :( I remember announcing in a chat room that my ISP had upped my monthly traffic allowance and it didn't cost me any extra, and everyone else in the chat was like whut? you had a limit???

I don't mind paying for mobile connection when it is needed, I just hate the forking over $$ and then feeling like I have to sit through stupid you tube videos on the last day of the 30 days just so I can feel like I got my moneys worth out of it. An iPhone would probably get similar kind of use, but I would definitely need to have access to internet away from wifi spots too, so some kind of data plan would be needed. I was just wondering if maybe some of the more obscure carriers have more forgiving plans.

unfortunately until iPhone 4s is on vodaphone the other smaller carriers won't get the iPhone 4s but 2 degrees can't because there prices to keep the iPhone 4s is to much:mad::(

Telecom has a bigger presence in New Zealand, but they can't seem to hammer out a decent contract with Apple :(

No worries though, when we (finally) get the iPhone 4S I'm gunna stick my old Telecom SIM card in it ;)

How do you know your drunk?

When you throw your pet parakeet at your piggybank and shout "ANGRY BIRDS!!!" :D

Yes you can.

Telecom and 2Degrees offer prepaid 50mb and 100mb packs if you want something less?
