Releasing a JB only for 5.0 would be like not releasing one at all. Anyone who bought a 4S 2-3 weeks after release would be screwed. There might still be 10,000 peopleost of which are here that are still on 5.0. The dev's are are smart enough to crack the JB THEY AREN'T STUPID, releasing it for 5.0 would be ultra fail. Bottom line. I doubt we see a A5 JB til 5.1 drops. Mark my word. I called it

So is the general consesus to go to 5.0.1 for 4S users?

The only thing needed now is a way to inject the exploit into the A5. Since the A4 had the limera1n exploit they are taken care of. When there's a way to inject the exploit, the jb will be usable on all firmwares until apple patches it.

update to 5.0.1. its ok.

I have to agree with this now. Mind the caveat, though..

Here's what I've found.

iOS 5.0.1 OTA should be the 9A405 build. That contains baseband 1.0.13 for iPhone 4S users. iOS 5.0.1 through iTunes will be the 9A406 build, containing baseband 1.0.14. TiPb and MacRumors here confirms this:

http://www.tipb.com/2011/12/16/apple-releases-version-ios-501-update-iphone-4s/
https://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php//t-1292138.html

On 11/27, MuscleNerd tweeted about a very promising unlock for 1.0.13 and older for the 4S.

There is nothing mentioned about this exploit being available for baseband 1.0.14 for the 4S.

So at the very least, with what pod2g and MuscleNerd have said, YES, it is safe to update to 5.0.1.

CAVEAT: Watch out for the baseband, especially if you are wanting to unlock. If the 9A405 build is still available OTA (which according to users in this thread, it is), then updating to 5.0.1 OTA would be the recommended way to go, if you want a potential jailbreak AND unlock.

Build 9A406, and any subsequent build afterwards may lose your ability to do both.

BL.

I am not sure what the baseband on 4S, OS5. However, 4S with 5.0.1 has baseband of 1.0.13.

4S on 5.0 has BB of 1.0.11

Why would you need to update to 5.0.1 at all? It didn't add any featuresadds only fixed the battery issue for some. 5.0 runs perfectly fine on my 4S.

I have a 4S ive been holding out on updating from 5.0 to 5.01. I will be interested in unlocking the phone once the JB is out.

Since a JB has been released for A4 devices on 5.01, does it make sense to stay on 5.0 on a 4S still? Im woried about 5.02 being released and losing the signing window for 5.01, but also about potentially losing an unlock by updating past 5.0 before the JB.

Thanks for any advice...

I am in the same exact boat, sitting right next to you - Hey buddy how you doin'? :)

What if Apple releases 5.0.2 and does not sign 5.0.1 anymore? How would you get yourself 5.0.1?

This is assuming of course a JB is released only for 5.0.1 like it is for A4 devices.

Why would you need to update to 5.0.1 just to jailbreak an A5 device? That doesn't make sense. Why can't the jailbreak just run without us having to reinstall the firmware? Why can't we just run Redsn0w and jailbreak?

Well the A4 cant be jail broken on 5.0 at the moment, only 5.0.1

Isn't that backwards? Maybe I just need some coffee.

All the work being done now on JBing the A5 devices is based around 5.01 not 5.0 .

Pod2g the person who is working on the JB has a A5 device that is on 5.01 so the best bet is to update to what he has.

If your going to do the update do it over the air not through Itunes as there are 2 different versions of 5.01 depending on how you did the update.

Pod2g also tweeted do not update to 5.02 if it hits because that could potentially lose the ability to JB at all as Apple may have closed the proverbial hole.

All this stuff is rather vague as no one is saying it wont work on 5.0 but at the same time you might miss the window of opportunity to update to 5.01 if Apple rolls out 5.02 as usually you will only have a few hours to update to the older firmware before they stop signing it.

Currently the A4 devices cannot use the new JB on 5.0 so alot of this speculation of needing to be at 5.01 is based around that .

Ah! I see! I was just confused as to why a jailbreak wouldn't work on 5.0 vs 5.0.1, because usually the newer firmware patches the jailbreak from the older firmware.

If I use tinyumbrella to save SHSH 5.0.1 right now, if apple release 5.0.2 and not sign 5.0.1 anymore, can I upgrade to 5.0.1 with the save 5.0.1 SHSH???? Is it right or wrong? Please explain......

No, on a5 devices you will need to be on 5.0.1 during the signing period.

Until there is a bootrom exploit for the a5 even the shsh/apticket and stitching firmwares will only work to downgrade on limera1n exploitable devices as it relies on pwned dfu mode to do the restore of custom firmware and to do the redsn0w recovery fix to complete the downgrade.

patience!!

be patient and wait!! thats what i have been doing since i bought my iphone4s and wont upgrade from 5.0 to nothing till the jb news comes out confirming anything further!! not worth taking the risks and especially when the difference between 5.0 or 5.0.1 is virtually nothing.

just my two cents!! :D
