My 4S is factory unlocked. Is jailbreaking going to change that? I've never jailbroken before

If factory unlocked, then the build won't matter. If you were locked, there is the chance that baseband 1.0.13 could be unlocked; that was the baseband in the 9A405 build. 9A406 has baseband 1.0.14, which may not be unlockable. But as you're factory unlocked, the baseband won't matter.

I'm torn on this myself. I usually say it's better to wait and be safe rather than sorry, but my only worry now is that the second Apple releases iOS 5.0.2, they'll stop making 5.0.1 available via OTA which would mean 9A405 (and thus baseband 1.0.13) would be lost forever. Sure, the signing window for 5.0.1 would likely stay open for a couple of hours and you could perform an iTunes restore, but that comes with 9A406 (and 1.0.14 baseband). So by waiting, it might be too late.

my baseband with 5.0 is 1.0.11 and I eventually want my phone unlocked
Do guys who wish to unlock stay with this BB, or is it ok to upgrade to 5.0.1 which changes the BB?

I updated for that reason of only possibly having a few hour window and i might be away from the computer all day busy working etc.

I don't want to regret it later .

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

It's best to update to 5.0.1 NOW! If Apple releases 5.0.2 or 5.1 and stop signing 5.0.1 then you are SOL. Chances are the jailbreak is only for 5.0.1 and not 5.0.

I understand peoples hesitation to update and generally or almost always i am the guy who waits till the last second on this sort of stuff but the only indication of any JB activity is all based around 5.01.

The Devs always being vague is the issue but what little info we have is from Pod2g and at this point ill take his word over anyone else's based on his A4 work .

Thanks for the link :)
I download stuff I wanted to save to my local :)
Will itunes let me point to the software at a later date, (or will it have it locked out somehow)?

As of now, I believe apple server are still signing both 5.01, and you can open up itune and do an option/restore or shift/restore and point it to the ipsw that you download on your local HD.

But like other said, when dev team release A5 jailbreak, apple might push out 5.02 or 5.1 and 5.01 signing windows might only get a couple hours.

If it's factory unlocked, then you've got nothing to worry about. It's only those with locked phones that the baseband version matters, since a newer baseband is less likely to have an unofficial unlock than an old one.

Had a launch day 4S, upgraded to 5.0.1 OTA, had the device replaced by apple with a 5.0 device. After reading this thread, I decided upgrade OTA to 5.0.1, but the phone keeps telling me that my 5.0 software is up to date "iOS 5.0 Your Software is up to date."

Any ideas how to upgrade OTA?

Exactly why I upgraded.

Everybody remember to do the OTA upgrade if possible. It is not only much quicker to do, but it gives you 9A405 which has a lower baseband (if it matters later on is still yet to be seen)

Apple doesn't know of any exploits in its BB to fix it, so I think that 9A405 and the baseband 1.0.13 will be unlockable. Seeing as the small bump in the number was to fix a "no sim card" error.

we can't get a direct answer from pod2g or musclenerd about this?

We have.

pod2g stated that it's okay to update to 5.0.1, but not to 5.0.2 or any version of 5.1, as you'd lose the ability to jailbreak. So you can update to 5.0.1.

The question is if you want to UNLOCK, and which version of 5.0.1 provides the baseband best suitable. The version that MuscleNerd tweeted about (the 9A405 build) was NOT the updated version that came out on 11/28; that was the 9A406 build.

So depending on which build of iOS 5.0.1 you have, you may or may not have the ability to potentially unlock your phone.

Okay got it, and the consensus here is that OTA 5.0.1 update with have an unlockable baseband.

Everyone keeps saying this, but nobody has provided the source. Not to say that you're being disingenuous, but I'd like to be 100% sure before I update.

He tweeted this the other day...go to his twitter its a few posts down if you don't believe me
"BTW: A4/A5 users, don't update to 5.0.2 when it's out, that would cut your jailbreak possibilities."

anyone know if apple is still signing 5.0.1 9A404, i'm pretty sure it was the first release of 5.0.1. when it first came out I updated to it and quickly restored to 5.0.0. it did not change my BB stayed at 1.0.11. At least I'm pretty sure it was 9a404 it's the the earliest one I have saved to my pc.

How did you restore back to 5.0? Because Apple was still signing it at that point?

yes when 5.0.1 first came out, when 5.0 was still being sighed. I did an ota to 5.0.1 then I restored back to 5.0 when I read the tweet by muscle nerd to stay on 5.0 But my BB stayed at 1.0.11 was just curious if apple was still sighing 9a404?

I just did some more searching and looks like 9a404 was 5.0.1 beta 2. Does anyone know the build for the origonal final 5.0.1 cause that one did not change my BB

Apparently if you update now OTA you will get build 9A405 with baseband 1.0.13. And if you update now via iTunes you'll get 9A406 with baseband 1.0.14.

I've been searching around and it looks like the original 5.0.1 was 9a405. If that's true than apple snuck a bb update in without changing the build number. Unless there was some way that me going back to 5.0 downgraded my bb. But im almost sure my bb never changed at all I remember checking.

Other way around.

Apple snuck an update for the 'no-sim' issue as well as a baseband update into 5.0.1, and re-released it as 5.0.1, after the original 5.0.1 build went out.

5.0.1 (build 9A405) came out roughly around 11/15/11. 5.0.1 (build 9A406) came out on 11/25/11.

But you can get 9A405 right now OTA right?
