Other way around.

Apple snuck an update for the 'no-sim' issue as well as a baseband update into 5.0.1, and re-released it as 5.0.1, after the original 5.0.1 build went out.

5.0.1 (build 9A405) came out roughly around 11/15/11. 5.0.1 (build 9A406) came out on 11/25/11.

I know about the 9a405 and 9a406 differance. I'm saying that when 5.0.1 final first came out it did not change my BB, it stayed at 1.0.11 when i did an OTA.

updating ota now, tired of that notification badge on my settings app lol

edit: now on 9A405 1.0.13

This is definitely a tough decision. If you only want jailbreak then 5.0.1 sounds fine, but if you want MN's unlock we need to wait and see what he advises. It sounds like the 9A405 5.0.1 should be unlockable according to his old post but it would be nice to get some concrete answers...

Still on 5.0 and BB 1.0.11 and going to wait until I hear confirmation to update. Can someone show me a link that says x.13 is unlockable and x.14 isn't? Is someone starting paranoia without proof?

Post #57 in this thread (shameless plug; yes, it's by me)

I have to agree with this now. Mind the caveat, though..

Here's what I've found.

iOS 5.0.1 OTA should be the 9A405 build. That contains baseband 1.0.13 for iPhone 4S users. iOS 5.0.1 through iTunes will be the 9A406 build, containing baseband 1.0.14. TiPb and MacRumors here confirms this:

http://www.tipb.com/2011/12/16/apple-releases-version-ios-501-update-iphone-4s/
https://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php//t-1292138.html

On 11/27, MuscleNerd tweeted about a very promising unlock for 1.0.13 and older for the 4S.

There is nothing mentioned about this exploit being available for baseband 1.0.14 for the 4S.

So at the very least, with what pod2g and MuscleNerd have said, YES, it is safe to update to 5.0.1.

CAVEAT: Watch out for the baseband, especially if you are wanting to unlock. If the 9A405 build is still available OTA (which according to users in this thread, it is), then updating to 5.0.1 OTA would be the recommended way to go, if you want a potential jailbreak AND unlock.

Build 9A406, and any subsequent build afterwards may lose your ability to do both.

^Thanks. Missed your post.

With that being said, 1.0.13 is not guaranteed to be unlockable. I'm keeping my 1.0.11 BB because an unlock is more important than a JB for now. Hopefully when the JB is released, it can be done on 5.0 and 5.01. Not jumping the gun yet until I hear word from the devs.

To me that tweet sounds more like .11 will work that possibly .13 - but we won't know until it gets closer... it would be a silly situation if you needed .11 for unlock but to jailbreak you need 5.0.1 and that forces .13-.14 baseband on you. They'll probably figure it out soon and give some official advice.

None of that actually says 1.0.13 is unlockable. Hell, we don't even know if 1.0.11 will be unlockable after all is said and done. All we really know is that 1.0.11 is showing promise, and that given the timing, it is unlikely Apple closed the hole in 1.0.13. If the hole is still there in 1.0.13, I suspect it'll still be there in 1.0.14 as well - unless "No SIM" bug actually is the vulnerability they're exploiting.

I had a phone on 1.0.14, which I just swapped at the Genius bar since my phone randomly lost its WiFi (wifi option was grayed out and MAC showed as "N/A"). My new phone is at 1.0.11, and now I don't know what the heck to do. I think I'll stay at 5.0, but the battery life does seem worse than 9A406. Maybe I should just sell this one and buy a factory unlocked one (I already have one though... don't really need two unlocked iphones... only care about software unlocks because of resale)

I wonder if someone could clear this up for me. When everyone talks about unlockable, do they mean carrier unlocked? I'm based in the UK and bought mine from the Apple store which I believe comes unlocked as default and therefore I don't need to worry about the baseband revision?

Software-based unlock. Some carriers (notably AT&T in the US) refuse to unlock iPhones under any circumstance, regardless of contract status. Because of this, hackers have developed all sorts of unlocks for the various iPhones over the year. These unlocks depend on specific baseband versions, since Apple usually closes the vulnerability once an unlock is released.

Just did an OTA update, still getting 9A405. Now I just hope 5.0.1 is what I will need for a jb.

Either official 5.0.2, official 5.1 or untethered 4S/iPad 2 5.0.1 jailbreak is coming.

I read that on twitter too, but that statment is confusing, do I upgrade or what?

I just upgraded from 5.0 to 5.0.1. It sounds like p0sixninja knows there's something coming down the pipe, and since I don't need to unlock, then hearing him give the go-ahead was enough for me.

Now on 5.0.1 (9A405) and baseband 1.0.13. FYI, I upgraded OTA and it couldn't have been simpler to do.

Yeah I don't need an unlock, however I'd like to have to the option for resale. I upgraded anyway OTA.

Oh, I agree. I never needed the unlock when I had my 3GS, but I preserved the baseband like it was gold for resale purposes. Then, when it came time to sell it, I found (in my area, at least), that the unlockable baseband wasn't really that coveted. It didn't help me sell the phone any faster or for more money.

This time around, I've just decided to do what's best for me and not worry about how much $$$ it might cost me when the time comes to sell the 4S. :D

The confusing part is the tweet is hinting 5.0 is unlockable and 5.01 is jailbreakable, but don't you need jailbreak 1st to do the unlock.

I'm guessing that it will be like the A4 jb. They will release 5.0.1 first, than 5.0 after awhile. I think that the jb is being made on a 5.0.1 device, and it will take awhile longer to apply it to 5.0.
