It's crazy to me that I ordered at 3:50AM EST and I have an Oct 5th delivery.

Doesn't make sense.

I have one oct 5, but the problem was the iphone app loophole (hehe i dont mean to make you feel bad either).

I ordered 3 - the app allowed us to order 5min before 2AM CST (launch time). I bet that didn't help people constantly refreshing and getting locked out!

2/3 were done before 2AM with 21st delivery. BUT the 3rd was add a line so I had to wait till about 240 -- then I found out that freaking apple cannot add a line (though i had a reservation) -- so I had to place an order to upgrade a line at regular price (side note I also added a line on ATT but that has a 2-3week wait)...Whichever comes first for the 3rd I will keep since I dont care about a dummy phone (new home phone line)

After this how many people in here will ever pre-order an iPhone from Apple in the future? I won't. Probably try Radio Shack next time. I bet next time they have Pre-orders they'll sell out in the 1st 5 minutes, making it even less likely that anyone will be happy with the results.

----------

That still leaves the mystery of why nothing between Sept 21 and October 2?

I won't preorder again unless I am able to do it first thing and it shows I get it on the first day.

And I agree with you; what is happening between the 21st and the 5th? I assume stocking the shelves so "joe six-pack" can run down and get one after he sees the 6 o'clock news about them. The heck with loyal customers. Gotta get some new blood.

I ordered through the App Store app as well, albeit 50 mins after the preorders began, but I'm surprised that people placed their orders 20-30 mintues after me and have Oct 2nd delivery dates.

I called Apple CS to try to get any info and ask for expedited shipping like a few people have done with no luck. He actually said putting expedited shipping on the order would mean him having to cancel and redo the order which I obviously don't want.

Anyways, I've been holding out hope with the rest of you that the 5th is the worst-case date from Apple and that there's a good chance we'd get it next week. However, I think we've overlooked that they're launching in other countries on the 28th which may mean that all supplies produced for the next week are headed to stock those launches. But we can still hold out hope that we'll start to see some of us getting bumped up following this weekend.

Btw, ordered at 5:25 am ET on the 14th.

10/5 here as well

absolutely no change to order status or charges since I sent in my pre-order on the 14th. Kind of annoying

I hope y'all get them ahead of time! I am not eligible for an upgrade until October 1st, so I couldn't even pre-order but I am thinking that since a lot of people with later arrival dates are planning on standing in line it may bump everyone up to sooner arrival dates. :)

So think positive! :)

Ordered Apple store 00:15 pst on 9.14, account order said delivery on 9.21, two hours later account said delivery October 5...go figure?

With early order times like this that still didn't make the cut, it makes me wonder what happened. I figured anyone ordering at least 6 hour into launch would be taken care of.

Agreed, but it just seems hit or miss...and my order was for only one device as opposed to those with multiple device orders. I read a couple of other threads, where some are receiving one order for five devices on the 21st.
Definitely makes me wonder. For those that thought they were part of the "launch day" shipments, I know how you feel.

Maybe, with everyone canceling their preorders, I'll get mine before 10/5 :)

If other people who got october dates cancel it doesn't help since only a slot vacated by one of the 9/21 folks would be useful, and those lucky bastards sure won't be giving up their slots.

Got an email today saying my iPhone 5 has been shipped. Wasn't expecting until at least 2nd October.

Only problem, I haven't got a nano-sim yet and I'm going on holiday on Sunday.

So I might as well leave it in it's box until I get back.

If that's true I'd join "joe six pack" and get one at the store myself. That really would be nuts if someone who placed a preorder and got that ridiculous October date could simply go to the store and get it faster than Apple would have shipped it. Then you gotta wonder why they had a preorder in the first place.

What time did you order. I didn't get any email. Apple is going to have to deal with a LOT of angry customers who weren't treated fairly.

Same boat---LAST time I "pre" order (I think)

I pre-ordered the 4 for my wife and myself when it was released. Ordered late so got a late shipping date, but then they cancelled one of the orders so got pushed back further. Long story short, it was a bad experience that I said I wouldnt let happen again.

2yrs later: Ive forgiven apple.com for jacking up my last order. Set my alarm to get up, start trying to order, cant get through (didnt think of using the store app stupidly). Finally place order for both phones. Missed the ridiculous cut off by minutes so now I have the oct 5th date. Then thinking Id be able to just pick up a dock adapter or two at best buy or att store a few days ahead of getting my phone didnt order any. Dock adapter says ships: october, does that mean the end of october? In which case, if my wife or I either one lose or break our charging cord, we wont have ANY possible way to use our phones!! This is insanity and its just getting worse. Its a plug adapter, there are no screen yields to contend with, why can they not have those already produced and on-hand??

And now of course Ive seen the many hundreds of posts from people who didnt bother getting up in the middle of night to order, who will be getting their phones sooner than me. People who ordered in the middle of the afternoon and have delivery dates of next week.

Im actually just tired of seeing all these posts labeled "preorder" this or that. It isnt a preorder, its called a back order. A pre order is when you pay in advance to have something delivered to you when it is released. Pre order customers take the most risk of any buyer---buying untested, unseen. And should get a little better treatment than this, putting stock in stores so they can sell to people who want to play with their friends phones or go in the store and use the demo phone before paying up hard earned cash.

I think there is a very big manufacturing problem with these phones to see the kinds of delays that we are. I mean 45min basically wiped out what was on hand.

Very well written. Never thought of the preorder vs back order. Makes perfect sense. I guess I "back ordered" my phone too. :)

Did anyone else get $1 hold on their credit card shortly after ordering that disappeared later? Now I see no evidence of an Apple charge. It certainly doesn't look my phone will be coming anytime soon. That means I have to go the goddamn store and all the hassle and long lines. Way to go Apple.

Ordered before 5am CST in Austin, Texas. Order still processing, showing delivery on Oct. 5th. No changes since order was placed for two phones.

I wrote about that manufacturing issue that I suspected to be the case a few days ago. Apple has been very deceptive about this and I think they're going to end up getting sued over this whole ordering debacle and attempted cover-up of the manufacturing issues. Makes you wonder how weil these phones are gonna work if the manufacturing process is so hit-or-miss that they're barely able to produce anything.

I had the same thing. I have no evidence with my card that anything ever happened. Just my order status in the store mocking me. :)

I think tomorrow is going to shake everything out. When people can or cannot walk in and get a phone it's really going to up the lid and show us what's really happening. If there are more than enough to go around for walkin customers then we know that this backorder was a ploy to sell more "pre" orders and be able to fill walkin customers too.

Ordered at 7:53 Eastern time from Apple, and have the 10/5 'deliver by' date, and no change in the order status since the original order acknowledgement email. I did get the AT&T CSS email today at 11:24 thanking me for choosing AT&T.... Not sure that has anything to do with the Apple shipping progress, but it at least let me know that something is progressing.... Am traveling on the 5th in the afternoon, so hope I can negotiate with the shipping company if the 5th is actually the arrival date.

To all those who read this post,

Please understand that this is only a phone, a popular of course, but a phone that you will have as soon as the company is able to mass produce them. The worst you want happening is for Apple Inc. send you a rushed production of a phone that is defective. It has happened that devices are simply defective by default because they mass produce them.

I believe a smarter approach for Apple to do is hold off the launch of the device until at least three weeks to one month or produce enough to offer to valued customers. Apple Inc. doesn't get it. They are a favored company that just closed at over $700 a single share! They're going up and up in directions only Steve Jobs can only be grinning like the Grinch only can. They need to consider the quality over quantity in customer service. If you promise a product launch on a given day, is it worth it to underperform with the production that they have? Please understand that the company has only mass produced at best 4 million total iPhone 5 devices. Of the 4 million, 2 million, the number they sold, they can actually sell to the general public. You're asking yourself, what about the other 2 million? The answer is at your local Apple Retail Store. Each and every Apple product is backed by a limited warranty that if your device is defective, you are entitled to a new device. It may be with a $49 service fee, but it's better than being told, "Due to the demand, we cannot offer you a new device until a new shipment comes in one month. In the meantime, we can offer you a replacement iPhone 4S until your iPhone 5 comes in."

Apple Inc. dropped the ball when they stated pre-orders to occur for 3am only to sell out in 30 minutes. It took the company three days to sell the supply they did in 30 minutes. It's hard to believe Apple would only produce the same number of iPhones they did at the launch of the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is a larger product than Apple has ever dealt with. In July 2012, Apple sold less iPhones than in any quarter since the quarter that followed the introduction of the iPhone 4. At least 30-40 million people were holding off to get the new iPhone. Apple should have used this as a sign to either mass produce enough iPhone to please all or hold off for a late October launch.

Use the short period of time with your old iPhone with iOS 6 before getting your iPhone. Look at not getting your iPhone on launch day as a positive. iOS 6 is a massive and excellent update to the world's best mobile software bar none. If you play along with it for a while, when you get your new iPhone, you'll learn a few things in iOS 6 only for the iPhone 5 and you'll be all set.

Apple has done wrong and I hope they change the customer service in the future. Any thoughts?
