I "love" Apple and their ******** "Preparing for shipment" change... partly because I ordered about 50 minutes after pre-orders opened on Sept. 14th, initially it said 9/21, but by the time I had checked out it'd switched to a couple of weeks (so I fell into the Oct. 5th group).

I figured I'd give getting one in-person a chance (plus I'm a grandfathered FamilyShare plan member, so I could have done the method to get the unlimited data since we have a dumbphone line with upgrade available- didn't know about this method when I had preordered), but then very early this morning, I see that they'd changed it to "Preparing for shipment", so now I can't cancel my order online and thus who knows how it'll impact the UDP on my line. All the while, there was no line at the Verizon near me and they still have phones available.

The worst part? Seeing people who ordered several hours after I did get shipping notifications, and yet Apple hasn't sent me any shipment notice. **** Apple.

Exactly how I feel. I feel tricked...

Anyone else feel like an idiot for getting locked into a pre order that won't show up for weeks while folks just walk into a AT&T store and buy one today? Can't even buy one at full price due to a per customer limit.
I'm sorry but the folks here defending this are wrong. This is a poor way to treat customers. I still love apple and not saying I won't keep using their stuff. But right is right and wrong is wrong.

Not me.

I have called two stores and they are sold out anyway.

So I am screwed either way.

Walked into the AT&T Store at noon and they had plenty

I stopped in the ATT store in Southlake, TX on my way to lunch around noon. They had the doors open and snacks, water, etc. and all of 4 people waiting for phones. I asked the clerk if they had any in stock - "yes, plenty". I was able to cancel one of my pre-orders (my daughters, not mine!) and pick one up there (16GB white).

They were not busy, the total wait was 10 minutes or so and then another 15 to set it up. . .

My other two phones are set to come next week and Oct 5.

i was hoping to do that but i checked my order this morning and it's preparring for shipment. oh well, i can wait it out.

I am processing Oct 5 still (ordered 4:30 AM EST) and just got a call from AMEX for fraudulent charge notification, which was the Apple charge. They said they would let charge thru but when I went on Apple Store order status page, it said I had to re-authorize payment, which I did. And now full charge is shown as pending on my credit card.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Hopefully this charge hold did not cycle me to a lower priority with shipment or create any sort of roadblock to me getting this phone in addition to what we are all already facing.

I did and I get:

You have chosen a product that cannot be cancelled without canceling the other products.

Please select the related item(s) before submitting your cancellation.

____

It only lets me select the phone, not AppleCare because it's complete. What now?

Looks like you're screwed like the rest of us who couldn't cancel for whatever reason. Now you gotta wait for the shipment to come. Between this whole pre-order fiasco and removing Google Maps and replacing it with a half baked alpha level software it makes you wonder if as some said, Apple lost its mojo with the death of Steve Jobs.

Received Oct 5th date for both orders. Black64 phone is preparing for shipment, 32 order still processing. It stinks, but I knew it was delayed when I ordered. Assuming at least the 64 will arrive before Oct 5th,

The part that irks me most is that my att statement cut on the 15th and I was charged for 2 upgrade fees without the phones even being in my hands and activated.

If it ships tomorrow the delivery date will still be 10/5.

Apple always goes conservative on delivery dates. If you get it on 10/5 I will be very surprised.

I had the 10/5 date and my status changed to Shipped today. New date says 9/27. Black 32gb At&t orderd from Apple.

So my shipping date is oct 5th, but my card just just charged 5 minutes ago.

Does that mean I could be getting it early?

It makes no sense that we "pre-ordered" the phone and didn't get it today, yet any random person can just walk into an AT&T/Apple store and pick one up.

I feel the same way. If they had such a demand for online "pre-orders" all of the available phones should have gone to them. I pre-ordered so I could get the phone on the release date. I have no desire to wait in a line, and I work for a living and don't want to take vacation time to do so. Yet even if my local store has them in stock, my order went to "preparing for shipment" today and I'm no longer able to cancel the order so going over and getting one is not possible. Just noticed that the charge is on my credit card now too.
Apple has done this many times, and they still screw it up every time.

Black 32 ATT ordered 9/14 from Apple at 4:07- just went from processing to preparing to ship. Any idea how long before a shipping notice?

I ordered a 32gb Black ATT at 3:21am CST and then a 16gb White ATT for my wife several hours later. Her's went into preparing for shipment last night and was shipped this morning. Mine is still in processing. :)

They'll be here eventually!

Mine finally went into preparing for shipment a few minutes ago. Hooray!

Alright team, I'm making a gut decision. I'm canceling the pre order and testing my luck with the stores. As long as I find one before 10/5, I'll consider it a win!

I would not hesitate at all if I could cancel my order right now.

My wife's 32gb white has shipped as of this morning
My 64gb black has been "preparing for shipment" all day.

I ordered them at 4:00AM EST

You don't get an email letting you know of the change. What I do know, is that mine has been at preparing for over 10 hours.

does this board have a consensus on average time between card charge, awaiting shipment notification, and shipped notification?

just had my own question answered..my card was charged at 2:01PM EST for full amount and Apple Store Order Status switched from Processing to Preparing for Shipment at 3:42PM. So figure around 2 hrs difference between CC charge and prepare for shipment..
