iPhone 5 damaged possibly cause of otterbox?

I don't know about you guys, but that doesn't look a thing like sand/grid damage. It looks like a reaction with the plastic in the otterbox case.

looks like typical case markings that can be wiped off with some rubbing alcohol and bounty... but the OP is too lazy and scared to try and wipe the phone so he will be stuck with that until he cleans the markings...

Hi All,

I have owned my iPhone for 10 days. Since day one it has been in a brand new Otterbox defender series case. I took it out today to clean it and look what I found on the back. It looks like the material left a permanent mark on the back of my iPhone. I will be emailing them today to see what they can do. Any thoughts? I tried wiping it clean with a microfiber cloth and that did nothing.

I have otterbox and no damage whatsoever. It's probably just dust. Clean it up.

I completely agree with Bahroo. I had the same case and just assumed my i5 was very safe. One night I took my perfect phone out of the case just to discover that enough grit had been grinding into the screen right under the earpeice triangle to leave a permanent etching. No big deal since that phone had reception problems and was exchanged but the new i5 got skinned and a bumper instead of the Otterbox. If you are playing football with your new iphone 5 then the Otterbox is great protection but I think a good skin and bumper are better for a less active life style.
I did the same except body skin and Incipio Frequency

It makes me think though, what if a year down the line when I remove my skin will paint come off with it?

From my experience from my iPhone 4 otterbox ill definitely stay away from it. Left marks on my glass that wouldn't come off even with a bit of cleaning solution/alcohol. I cleaned the damn thing weekly too. I also saw the same case chew up the steel antenna band with marks on my girlfriends phone.

I'd still try cleaning it off with a microfiber cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol. The coating won't come off...

No I'm worried about damaging it further.

Agreed. Is it plastic or silicone against the phone? Plastic will cause wear and silicone "sweats" (room temperature) and will leave a residue. I gave up on Otterbox when the silicone relaxed enough to interfere with the proximity sensor. The warranty replacement was the same out of the box.

No worries if you want to clean your phone in a manner against Apple's recommendations, but other folks won't and that doesn't make them lazy or scared.

Well, I don't have an otterbox, but just took my case off for the first time since day one and where the apple logo is, it's now a different color/shade. The case I have leave the logo area exposed to light and other elements where the rest of the phone (except for the camera) is fully closed.

i think it was just easier to fix a shatter back on the iphone 4/4s then all of these issues

PS anyone with an otter box have this issue?

Otterbox damage

Otterbox cases are known for damaging iPhones. Many moons ago when I owned an iPhone 3GS i purchased an Otterbox case while in the AT&T store and cased it up immediately upon purchase. Later when I opened it up to clean it like a month later there were all these scratches on the aluminum back that were obviously perpetrated by the Otterbox case. I no longer use Otterbox. Used Griffin and some others for my 4 and eventual 4S.

I've used the OtterBox Defender on my iPhone 4 for the past two years; I've only taken it out maybe three times to clean the case/phone and there is absolutely no damage what-so-ever! The phone still looks as good as the first day I purchased it, my wife's is exactly the same with her OtterBox...

For those who travel, work outdoors such as public-safety, construction, etc. You simply cannot beat the OtterBox cases.

I am going to upgrade to the iPhone 5 soon, and I just purchased the OtterBox Defender from Amazon on sale for $32 shipped to my door. A great value given my line of work and how the phone held up after being dropped, sat on, wet, etc. The day and the life of a firefighter... By the way, the new iPhone cases are awesome, the rubber feels so much nicer in the hand...

I say just case it up, clean it about every six months and enjoy the dam thing for what it is; protection...

I previously used my 4S in an Otterbox defender with both a back and front skin with no fitment issues and it looks like I'll be going the same route with the 5 to avoid these marks. Hope it'll fit just as well.

Just wanna repeat my post 25 Sep. - https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15867733#post15867733

"Each new scratch will decrease resale value of your iPhone 5. Just imagine the situation, when one year later you have to sell your phone and buy new iPhone 6. Who is interested to buy your phone if it scratched like a hell?

You also cant prevent it with almost any kind of bumper or case. Small particles of sand and dust will act as abrasive and scratch anodzied surface under the case even more if you leave the phone naked. We have to see very soon a lot of complaints "My xxx case scratched my iPhone!!!".

Clearly, Apple did big mistake with wrong choice of materials. They have to pay for it very soon. Period."

I sent the pics and they just told me they would refund me my money. I will be taking legal action.

yeah... hiring an attorney will be logical... can you show me in the otterbox warranty that it wont do this?

really doubtful that you will take "legal action" ... and even more doubtful you will win....so you'll be liable for their court fees as well. much greater than the cost of several iphone 5s....

i had a otterbox on my iphone 4 but after like 2 weeks of cleaning out the debris that magically found its way in i bought a speck candy shell and loved that one, i still use it on my 4 today, but im going with a simple bumper and screen shields on my iPhone 5, but on the cases the scratch phones, the apple bumper left scratches on the antenna band, but for the cost of an otter box i would pass it.

I hope they laugh you out of court.

Their website specifically states, they are not liable for any damage to your phone. Pretty much all case manufactures has this stipulation.

oh man........ looks like the dye that Otterbox used for their case somehow leaked unto the phone? did you try wiping it away with alcohol?
