I'm confused
I thought the latest rumor was for the 5 to retain the form factor of the 4 with no redesign till the 6 next year.
I like what I see here and will definitely be a player for it when and if it materializes.
I don't like the 4's thick and heavy look at all so for me this is a step in the right direction.

If you think the iPhone's thick and heavy you're obviously too young to remember how phones used to look. The Nokia 'brick' was called that for a reason.

Prototype

I am sure Apple has the same design and a lot more, if some one get access to Ive fortress  he will see all what he could or couldn't imagine of iPhone shapes.
That doesn't means they will ship it.

No, no, no. This is one macrumor I will never believe. Either that mockup fails or a teardrop phone is something I never imagine apple making, or both.

I dislike the MacBook air comparison, as that is a computer, which is larger, thus can have the teardrop shape while remaining aesthetically pleasing. None of apples products smaller than 5 inches has been asymmetrical, in the history of apple (I think). That also looks like it would be weird to hold in the hands when landscape watching movies or whatnot.

I have doubts about the 3.7" screen as well... if the screen stayed the same resolution, that would just stretch everything to make them bigger and blurrier! A step *backwards* in pixel density per inch.

Are people forgetting this design is actually impossible.

The FCC stipulate that thet phones antenna must be as far from the earpiece as possible. So the bottom of the phone. No antenna is that thin.

A teardrop shap is achieveable. But it will not be that thin.

unless ... it's a magsafe type connector ;)

Its just to thin for it to be at the bottom Apple needs to stay with the 30pin or else the Docks and stuff will not work. So they can't actually switch the Pin connector. It also has to have a usb mini now because of the European union

With Samsung Galaxy S2 beating iPhone 4 both in thinness and weight departments Apple will probably have to do something (however meaningless this is) and wedge shape might be a solution. It's hard for Apple to come up with a design as slim as Galaxy S2 because of the thickness of LCD panels (compared to OLED ones) but they may try to go wedge in order to be able to claim that iPhone is thinner at the "thinnest point".

1) Hate the rounded corners
2) Hate the tapered "teardrop"
3) Hate the iPod touch mirror back
4) Hate the super-thin approach

These are all terrible choices that Apple is simply not going to make.

Why are you so sure? Have not they already made them once (for iPod)?

I'll say why

1) Hate the rounded corners — with the screen coming up that high in the mockup, the rounded corners will have to be a bit square to work.

2) Hate the tapered "teardrop" — this looks like it would be way to top-heavy and fall out of your hand a lot.

3) Hate the iPod touch mirror back — scratch central. It looks good for 15 minutes and then you're screwed after your first scratch.

4) Hate the super-thin approach — I like thin, but this is ridiculous!

There — best I have for ya!

A bigger screen and a thinner design sure sound great. I hope they get rid of the glass on the back too.

Not sure about the mockup.

But having very breakable glass on both the front & back is good engineering?!

Who says the galss is "very breakable"? For those of us that know how to take care of our expensive items, the glass holds up just fine. If you or anyone else goes about abusing their iPhone 4's then I guess the glass is very breakable. Try actually taking care of your $600+ dollar phone and you won't be breaking any glass..... just a thought.

The design of the iphone 4 is quite flawed but I can't imagine wanting this over the my current 4. Why does it need to be so thin? If they save space by shrinking the components, I'd much rather it be used for an extra NAND chip or more battery life.

I think it looks great! But I think the iPhone 4 is a work of art. I think the iPhone 4 looks much more elegant.
But what is not to like about this sketch idea. A larger screen, better camera and the A5

Since I know no one had read the article in full, and people are just commenting on the image it's self, I'll leave this here:

Note: Yes, folks, that’s our mockup — not a real device.

Update: One quick note worth pointing out — the taper is probably a little exaggerated in the mockup (that’s thanks to our so-so Photoshopping skills), and we’re not saying the backing will be metal, like the iPod touch. That’s simply the basis for this image.

Its fake, there is not anywhere to plug in the 30pin or the micro USB, look closely at the bottom of it there should be at least a bulge or something to allow you to plug it in.

Quite a fine piece of sleuthing there, sound like you have pieced the clues together quite skillfully. Seriously, reading is fundamental. In post #1, there is a link to sourse site where it was stated this was a mock up.

mock-up: (noun) a model or replica of a machine or structure, used for instructional or experimental purposes.

I'm glad this rumor wasn't true. That thick to thin is UGLY! Make it the same size throughout PLEASE APPLE.

I hope it doesn't look like that when it comes out... I know that picture is fake because Apple would never put out something that ugly.

In any case, it is far better looking than the current design. I'd buy it in an instant.

The structural elasticity of the polymer used on the iPhone 4 with it's electroconductive properties is one matter.

The fracture points along the surface where force will focus on the weakest point of the frame is another matter entirely and that's the specific reason I gave this mock-up a rating of bad engineering design.

Secondly, the lack of ergonomic design to fit on your hand is another can of worms.
