I wouldn't be cool with the teardrop shape. I love the design of the iPhone 4 and would be disappointed if they went a different direction.

But, I'm sure we will be hearing rumors about many different designs between now and the actual unveiling.

The same design everyone hated when it came out last year? I bet you'll like it on release day

Typical "pull it out of your ass" rumor. The iPhone 4 is a way better design than this teardrop POS, that is going backwards. After a certain point, thinness is impractical and hard to use as a phone in your hand. I would bet they stretch the screen and maybe change the back but most changes will be awesome internals.

Front face and button changes...maybe

But Steve would never allow that @rse of the iPhone to look like that!

I think the boys are just looking to scope out a few new apple eyes to their new web site...
;)

Hoax.

Engadget up to their usual tricks. Let's stick up some fake Apple news to either attract hits or rile up the Android fanbois.

The only thing is.

As chips get faster, and Apple are going to be forced to fit faster and faster chips whether they like or not, as Android handsets are getting faster all the time, they are going to have to get rid of heat.

A solid metal backplate is going to be the best way of dissipating heat from inside the device.

Can you imagine how scratched it would be? ( Im sure you can )

I think Apple are going to stick to Glass now to be honest

There comes a point, after years of each announcement being "Thinner and Lighter!"

That I have to say, "No thank you"

Too light and it feels cheap, too thin and it'll become weak, Apple have developed an unhealthy obsession with "Thinner & Lighter" everything. There has to be a balance.

Im also guessing they'll expect us to be really impressed that they've spent all this time making it 0.3456mm thinner and 4 grams lighter. With Steve showing a hundred side-by-side comparisons.

Thinner case = smaller battery, as battery technology would have most likely improved since the iPhone 4, why not stick the same sized battery inside, and then boast about the massively improved battery life?

Couldn't agree more, I miss the old days when you barely had to charge your phone twice a month (of course those didn't have 3g radios doing constant internet use). I would rather take a bigger iPhone that would last 2-3 days during modest usage.

Well, they don't care about the back of an iPad, so why an iPhone :)

To be serious, I don't think they will have any option.
As chips continue to get faster as makers try and out-do each other, they will get hotter. Android phones are being pushed and pushed as we're on the verge of 1.2Ghz dual core now, probably 2Ghz dual core in the near future and so it will continue.

Heat dissipation, like Laptops and iMac's and PC's will become a major factor in design.
You can't have large cooling vents, you can't have fans. The only way is going to be to dissipate the heat over a large metal area, and the only large area is the back of the phone, and it has to be a very conductive metal like copper/aluminium etc.

It's not going to be copper!

Looks iAnorexic. Will battery life be adversely affected?

I have a 3GS right now and am inclined to upgrade when the new version comes out...

Yeah the good old days.

When we had 1 inch black and white screens, no 3G and all you could do is call, text and play snake.

My iPhone 4 lasts at least four days on moderate use with 3G turned off.

Screen is too small. Unless ios5 is a radical step forward, I'll stick with Android for my phone with my ipad2 as my tablet.

"Update: We've received a tip (that we believe is reliable) that this redesigned iPhone 5 report is untrue."

Ok. Next mockup. Anyone?

Thank God, that design looked like ass! Anyone remotely familiar with Apple design should have cried ******** immediately.

I would certainly welcome a 3.7 inch screen, and I think Apple would only do this if they could reduce the bezel size and keep the width close to iP4.

As for the teardrop, I think this may have been exaggerated in the profile mockup pic; but I have to say I find my 3GS much more comfortable to hold than my girlfriends 4. i.e - it may not be quite as thin as in the mockup, but rounded edges like the iPad2.

Hopefully this will come in Sept rather than in the iP6; Arn and Josh's sources seem to have conflicting messages, which makes it all very interesting...

It took me all of 3 seconds to scream fake. The pictured tear-drop design ruins the iPhone's symmetry. That site pulls that garbage just for the page hits.

Aah I was referring more to the actual shiny backs. I think that would be a disaster

There is your bigger phone:)
