And that's not a negative. The 3GS was a huge upgrade to the iPhone 3G.

Not really. It was great to get more processing power out of the phone, but it wasn't as huge as the jump from EDGE to 3G or from the 3G/3GS form factor to the 4 form factor w/ front facing camera.

I know the iPhone 5 will sell just because it's the iPhone 5, but I seriously question the wisdom of anyone locking themselves into a 2 year service agreement with LTE/4G almost certain to be added to the iPhone platform in the 6 revision next year.

You can never truly "future proof" yourself, but it'd be silly to spend a lot of money and sign a contract for the right to own the last phone of the old cell data tech.

Err... no 4G aka LTE until 2012.

P.S. What do you think comes after number 4?

Depends who you ask. Some people will say 5, but don't forget Apple went from the original iPhone to iPhone 3G to iPhone 3Gs and then now iPhone 4. So who knows what the next iPhone will be called? 4G? 4s? 5?

Well well, European standards to make a difference! I think if you look at the 2nd picture, (to me) a 30-pin dock connector is present and that little grove? Looks like microUSB to comply with European charging standards. Only time will tell I guess...

No, that slot is the sim card slot. It isn't big enough for the Dock connector, and they wouldn't put it on the side of the phone.

Have you ever put an iPhone and the evo side by side? Overall dimensions are pretty close to identical

These don't look identical to me:

Well, I don't think that LTE/4G is going to be as wide spread as you think it will be in the summer of 2012. Neither AT&T or Verizon will have a nation wide 4G network, only a a large collection of major and mid-level metropolitan areas with 4G coverage. I think 3G, and in reality when you're talking about 4G you're really talking about 3.75G (HSPA+ and the like) which most if not all 3G based phones (including the iPhone 4) will be compatible with. 95% of the people buying an iPhone this summer aren't going to care about more G's, and half of that crowd won't even really know what they are. Plus, I have a feeling that the 4G data plans are going to be priced at higher tiers than the 3G data, and only the most serious nerds and data users are going to spring for it right away.

I consider my self a pretty serious tech nerd and I currently have the iPhone 4 on AT&T. My fiance is stuck with an old 3G and she wants to upgrade this summer. We will most likely make the jump to Verizon and I'll be upgrading as well. I have no need in the next year to year and a half for a larger phone bill or 4G data speeds.

I don't really care about the front camera at all, and the form factor is just that, form. The processing power really made the 3GS the first phone with very capable gaming capabilities and if developers had had the guts to run with it then, it would have established iOS as a gaming platform much earlier.

It was a huge upgrade, as much as the 3G, as much as the 4. It was simply different in what it brought.

If the iPhone 5 (or whatever they end up calling it) is simply a SGX543MP2 with a dual core Cortex A9 based processor, it'll be a tremendous upgrade.

You know I keep seeing people calling for Liquid Metal and I've no idea why? What benefit do you the user expect to gain from the use of LM over say Al?

The phone might be lighter. The production of it will be less expensive therefore :apple: can put in more goodies. The shape of the phone can be rounder, more ergonomically. They can make improvements over time easily in their production line. They may come up with a metal alloy that will be good for the antenna and not suffer the antenna gate issue...

IMO, that is the frame for the iPhone 4G. I bet it will work with AT&T and Verizon. No iPhone 5 for at least a year boys and girls.
How do you figure? Apple has refreshed the iPhone every June/July since the first iPhone. Sure the VZ iPhone is new, but the 5 will be here early to mid summer, and you can take that to the bank.

lolwut

If Apple does call the next iPhone the iPhone 4G then there will never be an iPhone with "5" in the title.

Naming will go as follows(something along these lines at least):
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 5 or 4G or ???
iPhone 6 or ???
iPhone 7 or ???

I will buy an IP5 on launch day but wont be keeping it unless it can be jailbroken. I will upgrade on launch day but keep my current phone until a JB is released...no JB, I will sell the IP5 unopened.

Of course, there also need to be compelling new features.

Since t-Mobile towers are being repurposed for 4G a year from now, I am not sure we'll see 4G in the IP5. If that's not there well, what then?

64 MB, maybe that would be good but expect $100 increase in price
1024K Graphics memory, aww..ok but 512 is pretty good

Bigger screen, hmmmm might be nice

What can they realistically do that is compelling??

There is no metal that will not form a conductive bridge between two separate pieces when you place your finger on both of them. The only way to prevent this is to a.) either coat the metal with a non-conductive material or b.) not put antennae right next to each other. For example, on the iPhone 4 Verizon, you could make the left and right segments antennae, with the top and bottom pieces just dummies. Though you'd still be touching both antennae with one hand at the same time, the chances of bridging the gap and actually conducting signal through your entire hand is much smaller than bridging over a few millimeters with just your finger.

But you are right about the Liquid metal being lighter due to being able to make it thinner since it is tougher and/or stronger.

Yes all indications are that an adapter will be used to satisfy the nanny states.
Change the whole design and philosophy for a small(in worldwide terms)market segment,of which an even smaller number of customers would use?No.

Errrm - you are aware that Europe accounted for ~27% of Apple's net sales in the last quarter? See page 25 of Apple's 10-Q: http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External.File?item=UGFyZW50SUQ9NzgwODJ8Q2hpbGRJRD0tMXxUeXBlPTM=&t=1

Not exactly what i would call small...

64 MB of storage? Man, I guess they really are going to really update their cloud services and storage with a new MobileMe! ;)

But features they can add that mean something to normal people:

-Bigger screen
-Finally release a white one
-Faster A5 processor and the new Graphics processor in the iPad 2
-New back plate material
-NFC for mobile payments and remote computing

Really? No iPhone 5 for at least a year? Doubtful. Every iPhone has been significant improvement. They will have to come out with a new phone to keep up with market. Just wishful thinking on your part because you probably just bought one.

How do you even consider either of those close in dimension? Those phones are just too big, and it's evident in their sales. Android as a whole is growing but the phone that really got the platform off the ground only had a 3.7" screen which was the Motorola Milestone. I wouldn't mind a 4" screen but only if they were able to keep the same form factor. The iPhone 4 is perfect size. I'd rather not have to carry around a jumbo sized phone.

1. no 4G/LTE ... no care.
2. Italy better retain the right to sell unlocked without contract.

If so, then I'll take buy one outright and take the iPhone plunge ... otherwise, I'll wait until the EU lowers data roaming and forces all countries to offer unlocked phones without contract (both issues are under EU investigation as anti-competitive business practices).

why are people willing to pay such ridiculous amounts for LTE? my home 15mbps internet service isn't stressed to the point where i need something faster and i stream a lot of netflix and youtube at home on my TV and iPad. why do i need 30mbps and higher speeds on my cell phone that uses less data than my home internet connection?

I don't think the 4 inch screen will get me to upgrade. If they make it out of alum I will probably still stay with my iPhone 4 as I quite like the glass.

Cool. Now that I got my Ipad 2 time to turn my attention to the iPhone 5.

Although I do like the design of the 4 I would not mind seeing a rounded back like the Touch or iPad. But Apple was really proud of the 4's design and the squareness / flat back allow more room inside for the battery so I doubt we will see much of a change in design.

I expect / hope for......

1. Slightly larger screen size.
2. A5 processor (aka iPad 2)
3. Incremental camera upgrades (slightly more MP)
4. Same as 4's design but with aluminum back
5. One model for GSM/CDMA
6. Black and white options.
7. Addition of 64GB size.

And NO nothing on it will be "liquid metal".
