One question still remains: Will it read?

As in read for you? Like scan the pages of a book, and speak the words out loud?

There's zero chance they'll release the iPad 3 this year.

Reason 1) At the iPad 2 keynote, Schiller said something to the extent of 2011 being the year of the iPad 2.
Everyone always brings this up in an iPad 3 debate. Regardless of whether or not it does or doesn't come this year, that means nothing. Secondarily, it was Jobs that mentioned that in a keynote not Schiller.

With every iPad 2 made being sold, what reason is there for another iPad this year?

I just don't understand it. If people say the "retina display", why wouldn't they use that as the headlining feature in the iPad the next year?

There seems no reason to piss people off with a new iPad when it could just as well come next year. Steve was also pretty clear when he said "This is the year of iPad 2"

I just don't get it

I agree. Apple is taking over a year to release the next iPhone but they're going to release 2 iPads in less than a year. Reminds me of the iPhone nano rumors. Really?

I hope they dont go the touch route design. I really do think the current Iphone design is the most beautiful it has been.

The rumors are correct - you are all interpreting them wrong. The iPhone 5 will have a 9.6" retna display.

Apple has released macs twice as year sometimes.

Why not with ipad and iphone?

Many brans like samsung release 10 phones a year. Maybe Apple wants to release two ipads the same year.

2nd week of August sounds great! I really hope they ship it to more countries in the first round.

If we see cases identical to the ones recently posted here, then we can say that the iPhone 5 will go the way of all the other iPhones, tapered edges.

I agree with you, the current iPhone design is the most beautiful. However, i plan on using my smartphone, not staring at it.. The original iPhone, the 3G and 3GS felt much better on the hand than the iPhone 4. Also, i'm sure Apple can make a rounded edged iPhone look beautiful.

iPad 3? I'm not so interested. But i do think that it'll be called iPad 2HD or something, or a more expensive model of the iPad 2, just emphasizing on the retina display. Hence Apple will still say "it's the year of the iPad 2"

At this moment in time, i believe it's better for Apple to focus on their iPhone line than their iPad.

The main goal, I think, is to stay far ahead of competitors. Which means releasing a new iPad that is head and shoulders above their best products, when their products are released.

the only thing is their competitors need to actually make a device that people want in order to actually sell well for the holidays, people dont shop JUST to shop during the holidays. Also note that most potential customers will expect a new iPad by Feb/March so they hold out for that update instead.

there is NO WAY iPad 3 is coming this year.

1) First off, Steve Jobs said, with a big sign in his presentation:
year-of-ipad2-225.jpg

2011: Year of the iPad 2.

2) did you just see the financial results of Apple last week? iPad 2 is selling HOTCAKES.......... and just recently did supply catches up with demand. NO WAY iPad 3 is coming this year.

3) Retina ipad.... it sounds like a BIG feature to me. Double the resolution? That means it needs a bigger and better GPU! CPU probably too.
I'd rather wait for a full blown upgrade for that.
CPU, GPU, RAM + Retina display. That's an iPad 3 for me....... I am happy with my iPad 2 right now.............. I'm not hungry for retina display THIS YEAR.

Bottom line?

No one knows anything!

I especially love the part where the china times article says:

Supply input string 應商 iPhone 蘋果 little electrical excitation 腦近 來增 period, suk comprehensive set 裝鴻 及和 sea, TPK 觸控 face plate, Shenghua, Dali light aircraft Jingtou phase crystal light bulb

I love google translate.

Apparently, as long as you call yourself an analyst, you can say anything you want.

I predict there will be another iPhone release next year around summer time.

I predict Apple will release an updated Apple TV in the future.

I predict Apple will continue to sell iPads.

As someone who bought the iPad 2, I don't understand why you'd be pissed. I wanted the iPad 2, it's been far better than I imagined, and honestly, the worst part of it is I only have one, and the girl always wants to use mine. I wouldn't have wanted to wait until thanksgiving for an iPad, and if the iPad 3 is that much better to me, I'll buy it and give the 2 away. Otherwise, I can sell the 2 and get money back. I can see if you bought an iPad 2 in october you'd be a bit miffed, but that happens with any update for late purchasers.

Yeah its far too early for an iPad 3, hopefully we don't see one this early, i don't think any applications or games have had the opportunity to take advantage of the new hardware on iPad 2.. Releasing an iPad 3 would be a bit silly at this stage.. But that's just me..

I find it hard to believe that Apple would release another iPad this year, considering the amount of people who bought the second one. These are expensive, premium devices. It's not a good idea to alienate your customers by making their purchase obsolete immediately. I can't really think of any another time where Apple has released a product and then released an entirely new version of it so quickly.

Actually not too long ago it was usual to see updates to their computers twice a year (that has not been the case recently though), i don´t see why they can't update the iPad twice in one year.

Edit: Sorry Sensamic, didn't catch your post.

If it were true about the iPhone, it would be very convenient because my upgrade is September 9th lol. As of smartphones, I've had the Blackberry Curve 8310, Blackberry Bold 9700, Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, and I currently have the Blackberry Torch 9800. Loved Android, but the Captivate had a bunch of issues, such as poor receptors and freezing. I love Blackberries, but they're too boring for me (not enough games and apps, which I realized after trying Android). And my Torch is very slow and freezes up just from unlocking it. I really want to try an iPhone. I love the design of the current-gen iPhone, so hopefully the next one has a similar design. Also spec-wise and feature-wise if their isn't a huge difference, I might just get the current-gen iPhone.

I just don't think the "year of the iPad 2" argument is a very good one, Steve Jobs could very well take the stage in September and say "We said this was going to be the Year of the iPad 2 and guess what, we where right and that is why we decided to make it even better....boom"
