iPhone 5 maybe but no iPad 3 this year.

The iPhone 5 is behind compared to the usual refresh cycle. An iPad 3 launch in the same year as iPad 2 is likely to cause a lot of resentment among their loyal customers. Besides they aren't under much threat in the tablet space yet, still very competitively priced.

This, although Apple don't much care about people feeling resentment.

Really cannot see an iPad 3 this year, seems completely illogical for numerous well documented reasons.

I've not got an iPad nor any real interest in getting one for the record.

Saying that, I don't think Steve Jobs and "year of the of the iPad 2" has any real credence, the guy has gone back on things he's said earlier so many times it's untrue.

I agree that the "Year of iPad 2" argument doesn't mean a whole lot, but when you combine it with basic common sense I'm pretty sure it spells out no iPad 3 this year.

The release of iPhone 5 in September will line up nicely with my eligibility to upgrade my phone. :D

there is a 3 week wait in Australia for an iPad2 so not holding out for a quick release of the iPad3 over here

This comment is actually one of the best arguments against the impending arrival of the iPad 3.

Apple hasn't finished its international rollout of the iPad 2, nor has it met demand internationally. It has reached a supply balance in a handful of countries, but not all.

iPad 3 is coming out February to March, I have an anonymous source inside of Apple's iPad design team. It will have retina display. Again there is no iPad 3 coming out, stop with these foolish rumors.

When I say Retina, I mean 2X ppi, which isn't quite 300+ppi like the iPhone, but since you hold the iPad further away from your eyes, you won't see the difference in real world applications.

There's zero chance they'll release the iPad 3 this year.
Reason 2) They are still selling a massive amount of iPad 2's. There is absolutely no need for them to release another so soon. It doesn't make financial sense.

Well if they can't build enough due to a supply chain issue, then releasing a new model with different spec's parallel to the current models would be a great way to reduce that problem.

Spec bump

I agree. Apple is taking over a year to release the next iPhone but they're going to release 2 iPads in less than a year. Reminds me of the iPhone nano rumors. Really?

The iPad2 is doing great, but the competitors have high res tablets now.
I suspect Apple will simply address this by giving the iPad 2s, "HD", or 3 a little spec bump and keep the same design.

People who already have an iPad 2 don't need to be pissed because something else came out that's better this is how tech works. Just buy, enjoy temporarily, sell... and the cycle goes on.

No ipad 3

There will NOT be an ipad 3.... this will be all about the iphone 5. I hope it more of a 5 then a 4gs... a slightly bigger screen? better camera?? design change??. I want to update my 3gs:D, been holding out... also feel like 4 was not really much of an update (no offense to you 4g owners:)) and its flunky design... if for nothing else I could see apple updating the case design due to the antenna issues.

The news report also reports that the next iPad may be delayed until Thanksgiving due to component shortages.

I assume you mean Thanksgiving 2012 or later. Cause you know what Jobs said. And anyone would be foolish to think otherwise. But I'll repeat it cause we get so many iPad 3 in 2011 rumours. And so many people still think an iPad in 2011 is actually possible. It's not. Cause Jobs said so.

Sapsucker

No discussion of iOS 5?

I have an iPad 2 (32 GB, Wi-Fi only, Black) and I will probably upgrade to the iPad 3 (128 GB, Retina, World/LTE, Black) when it comes out in Spring 2012 with its high-resolution camera w/LED flash, etc. At which point I'll give my iPad 2 to a needy friend.

However, that decision to upgrade will depend on what iOS 5 has to offer. In my opinion, its iOS which needs improvement... far more so than the hardware it runs on. With iOS 4, I feel as if I'm in some sort of stone age of operating systems. But I fear all their SW development effort has gone into Lion.

Can someone tell me why various versions of Mac OS X are named after cats while versions of iOS have no such sobriquet? How about birds? We could refer to iOS 4 as Sparrow and iOS 5 as Sapsucker.

Anyway, I really hope iOS 5 (oops, I mean Sapsucker) has playlist folders. I have this huge collection of carefully crafted playlists under iTunes on my Mac and its the only way I can manage my 68 GB collection of MP3s. I'd like to put my entire MP3 collection on my iPad 3, but it would be senseless to do this if Sapsucker doesn't support playlist folders.

The problem with this theory is that the alleged iPad 3 is a superior model, made up of parts that are harder to get/more expensive than those in the iPad 2.

Your scenario makes sense if they created a lower product line made from parts with greater availability.

Apple's margins on the iPad are relatively low. It makes more business sense for them to sell a particular design for a year to maximize profit from a single design (by letting the costs drop). It's not like the iPad has heavy competition right now.

*crosses fingers for iPad 3/Pro*

Yes because Apple are really likely to launch a new iPad in November and 4 months later release another.....

They are really likely to release an iPad 2 HD pro at a higher cost of all the iPads $899 and then usurp it with Retina across the board 4 months later starting at $499

None of the iPad 2 HD or iPad 3 rumors for 2011 make any kind of sense what so ever.

You can not release an iPad 2 HD by just bumping up the screen resolution a little, it has to be Retina or nothing.

Adding anything other than retina causes compatability problems for scaling the applications and would require a re-write across the board.

And then if Retina did come out in spring 2012 it would mean developers re-write their apps yet again.

Not going to happen....

Even if they did squeeze retina into the iPad 2 it would need more GPU power to drive the display requiring further hardware changes.

And then there would be no Apps ready for it regardless, and most developers by the time they did get around to updating their apps (if they could be bothered seeing as this would be one elite SKU out on it's own) it would be Spring 2012 and again the real iPad 3 would be here.

Logic & iPad 2 / 3 for 2011 are so far removed...

Yes. The iPhone 4 is the best example of this. 3 months delay from the usual schedule of 1 iPhone per year is particularly crazy in today's mobile phone market. But anyway, I wanna thank Apple for keeping me using the same mobile phone for 1 year & 3 months....I've never been so loyal to one single phone

I know for a fact that ipad 3 will be released in 2012 and that iphone 6 will come in 2012 or 2013, somebody call the press!

Don't bother, no-one believes you.

somethign new?

I predict something new. A touchscreen macbook air with a touchscreen keyboard/mouse. or an iOS based macbook air with a touchscreen.

Sure, I believe you... No, I don't actually. We've all read the rumours of the iPad 3 having a retina display.

For starters I reject "iPad 3". How do we know it's going to be called that exactly? I've always said as regards the iOS line up: Apple may be brilliant, but they need to employ some people just to think up good names. Windows Vista was awful in pretty much all senses, save a few. One: it had a good name. Now, with Windows 7, Microsoft have fallen into the same naming lethargy as Apple.

Anyway, coming back to the main point, no site's specified 2x ppi. Why? You think if they knew something like that due to inside information? They have't mentioned it because they don't know it. If no rumour site knows it, how can you? Unless you work at Apple yourself and are "releasing trade secrets"? ;)

Couple of things...

Could we maybe get a Sprint iPhone?? Ya know, on a network that has TRUE unlimited data.....

and....

Will it be 4G for this and/or with verizon and att's new networks??

Bit bigger screen and a few little lights won't make me switch from my evo right now...
