Agree...

Have you actually used any of the other tablets that are out there? It's almost embarrassing that some of them even exist. In short, Apple has nothing to worry about there.

I agree, on a couple of comparison surveys I've read online for a joke they tried out the 'all-new' iPad beating tablet against the old office iPad 1 and the iPad 1 smashed it... Common sense says that they bring an iPhone 5 out before the holidays due to the continual slating of the iPhone 4.

Mind you, just for holding, I'm glad, if they do, if they go back to a curved design, it's one thing they can't slate the iPhone 3 for ...

Ciao!

And then if Retina did come out in spring 2012 it would mean developers re-write their apps yet again.

Not going to happen....

I dunno... developers have already make apps for the following resolutions with little complaint:

480x320
960x640
1024x768

Do you really think there were any developers who said "screw the iPhone 4... I'm sticking to 480x320..." ?

Hell no... and I feel very strongly that developers will rewrite their apps for a future iPad as well.

You don't wanna be the only developer NOT supporting the new iPad... do ya? That's a scary place to be... almost like a developer who hasn't updated their app since 2009...

Your missing my point ENTIRELY! Were not talking about developers not catering for the future iPad. Were talking about them not catering for a bizarre SKU resolution iPad that would have a tiny audience due to its price (assuming the iPad 2 Premium thing was true ~ which it is not)

If they released iPad 2 HD in the fall - and it had some bizarre resolution that was above 1024 x 768 but way below Retina 2048 x 1536 = it would be a major pain in the ar5e for developers.

Especially if the iPad 3 does bump up to 2048 x 1536 Retina in all it's SKU's. Which all signs seem to point towards.

You would have this one overpriced iPad 2 model with a convoluted resolution that is neither here nor there. Developers are hardly likely to mess about developing for one SKU that in only a matter of 12-16 weeks later was totally superseded by the higher Retina display iPad 3 models.

Why should they spend money and time developing for an SKU that is out of date before they even finish updating their app, only to have to start updating it all over again because the iPad 3 has bumped up to Retina res.

It just defy's logic to think that it's going to happen. If Apple bumps resolution on any of the iPad's it will do so to the same resolution across the board, not some arbitrary resolution simply to make it look like its got a better resolution than some android tablet in time for the holidays.

iPhone 5!

I would be very happy for the iPhone 5 to come out in September. My current 3Gs plan ends just around then. Perfect. :)

iPad 3

Why would they come out with a new iPad when its still hard to get an iPad 2. Almost all the stores I've been to are out.

Ah... I see.

Well.... I doubt Apple has anything "bizarre" in their DNA anyway. They seem to plan for stuff very thoroughly.

As for developers... if you present them with a new SDK for an Apple product with a weird resolution... I think they'd be all over it.

But you're right... such a product will never exist.

It's Retina or nothing. :D

I'm waiting for my first iPhone...

I'm hoping whatever the next iPhone is and whenever it comes out... that it will be on Verizon as well.

iPad 1 is still a beast. However on the iPhone front, they have far more competition, so I don't think they would remain foolish by continuing to milk a product that is over a year old. Not only that, but eventually a new iPhone is inevitable and Apple by now knows we all expect one too. I can say I truly love this part of the waiting game game. Everyone speculates on what the new phone will, or won't have and then we get to compare that to what it actually has when it releases.

Tried a Windows tablet in HMV the other day... most of all, I felt pity since it was on a table with other hardware (mostly Apple) that actually worked...

Worrying about a developer who has his raw images scaled considerably above 3k and pixel density around 600 or 1200 dpi is a waste of time.

More importantly you're working in Vector imaging to raster imaging and even when you're doing Animation you're presetting your vector scenes to be rasterized frame by frame accordingly to the output viewport you plan to use.

Releasing a new iPad this year would be a pretty dumb move by Apple. People are still buying the 2 and they are going to buy the 3 if it comes out next year.

Can't wait to see what tricks Apple has up their sleeves for the iPhone 5. I'll be buying one shortly after it's released regardless of the specs or design.

The iPhone 4 retina display requires new graphic files but it does not require any re-engineering of the UI. Developers only have to deal with two different UIs required for their apps so far, I would assume Apple would like to keep it that way.

Apple doesn't need the holiday season to increase sales. They'll sell every iPhone and iPad they can make whatever time of year they're released.

While they sell everything they make, the question is "could they make more and sell them quickly?" If they have surge capacity it makes sense to do a holiday intro since that is when a high volume of sales occur. With the rash of tablets coming on the market - many of which appear to be reasonable competitors to the iPad - coming out with a better iPad to hold off the crowd seems like a good move.

Please, Apple, please put a really really good camera in the iPhone 5. Like the one in the Nokia N8.
If the iPhone 5 has the camera of the N8, Satio or Pixon 12 I'll be in heaven! All 3 are 12MP camera but regardless of that having used all of them (and owning a Satio) I fell in love with all the cameras. Heavily doubt we'll get something that good though, but we can hope.

Please start being more careful with use of fabricated and product mock-up images.

You treat mocked up images exactly the same as real images; only indicating that something is a mock-up in the associated text. not good.

I'm waiting for the 5 to drive down the price of the 4. I'm long overdue to upgrade my 3G!

If there is an iPad 3 in 2011, I'm sure half of the purchasers of the iPad 2 will be seriously pissed off!

Not me!I understand that new models are released all the time, unlike some people.I'm not foolish enough to demand no refresh for an 12 exact months or I'll throw a tantrum, especially since the last cycle was 9 months. No matter what the next iPad release looks like,I'll still be glad I upgraded to iP2.

OMG stop with iPad 3!!

The man himself, Apple God Steve said "2011: the year of iPad 2"!!! So why do people keep going on about iPad 3! There is no iPad 3 this year! I would love to be wrong on this one :D

I find it hard to believe that Apple would release another iPad this year, considering the amount of people who bought the second one. These are expensive, premium devices. It's not a good idea to alienate your customers by making their purchase obsolete immediately. I can't really think of any another time where Apple has released a product and then released an entirely new version of it so quickly.

I can,And I bought the originals!
Upgraded within months (or weeks):
Original AppleTV(bigger HD)
Airport extreme
Both same price.
Don't forget the dropped 4GB iPhone and the iPhone 1st gen.

So don't even tell me what Apple will and will not do.
For the record,I don't hate Apple for the above.

Of course the iPad 3 comes later, but not Thanksgiving later, normal iPad launch season later. Apple too smart to launch a new iPad in Nov. Apple has to time its launches so that every quarter has some major product to insure Q over Q growth and also keep the Apple buzz from fading. Apple can't afford to let one single quarter go silent right now. Competition is nipping at its heals. Last think Apple wants is to become the next Blackberry.

Don't forget the dropped 4GB iPhone and the iPhone 1st gen.

So don't even tell me what Apple will and will not do.

Yes, but that was done because no one was buying the 4GB model and Apple wanted to free up space on the production line to make more 8GB models people wanted. That is not the case here. All iPad 2 models are still selling well, heck, still launching in some countries. The iPad 2 has only just caught up w/ demand. Apple isn't going to pull it just yet. It's in the thick of the gravy profit right now.

What about a 4G iPad? Battery life has been a problem with 4G phones, right? With the iPad's size they might be able to squeeze in a big enough battery to compensate.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think an iPad 3 or 2HD comes out in 2011 and I don't think iPad 2 owners will be that upset. The iPad 2 is a great device. If the next gen iPad comes out in May 2012 vs November 2011 are iPad 2 owners going to feel that much differently about their device? Probably not. I have an original iPad and no plans on getting an iPad 2, even if the next iPad is 3 years away. The original is still a great device, just one with no camera. I have an iPhone 4 for that and FaceTime on my iMac too.

It's going to be a very competive market and Apple doesn't want to play catch up to other devices like some feel they're doing with the iPhone. Just look at the discussions about specs of the iPhone vs other devices. There are tons of discussions and not too many with the iPad. Apple doesn't want to slow down to let the competition catch up.

It's all perception to the "general public" with marketing phones, tablets and other devices. That being the case they want to make sure the public knows they have the best devices and they don't want to give a foot hold to anyone.
