When you guys say order through the carrier.. Are you talking about over the phone with a customer service rep from your specific carrier? That's easier than going online at Apple.com and placing the order?

Do Apple.com orders get priority in terms of shipping?

They mean going online through your carrier's website. For example, last year I was able to order directly through at&t even though the apple site's eligibility check page was overloaded.

here's a dumb question

Here's a dumb question, but can I order it from Apple and have it sent to my house and set it up at home? Or do I need to goto a store and do this?

I have a 3GS, and I waited in line at an Apple Store, and they set it up and all that other good stuff. I'd rather have it mailed to me as opposed to waiting in line again.

But can we do what you just said while pre ordering tonight?

Yes - as long as you already have a family account on AT&T. If you only have 1 phone on your account, it's not worth it.

Tonight, simply buy a new iPhone 5 on the same account as a new line.

Within the next month, switch to a Mobile Shared minutes plan.
After you get your iPhone 5, sell your iPhone 4S, and buy a $50 dumb phone.

Unlocked

I will be visiting the States next week, will stay for about 7 weeks
Does anyone here know if the unlocked phone could become available in that time?
How long has it normally taken from launch till unlocked iPhones in the past?
Google doesn't want to answer me this time

thank you whoever you are mr. Answerer !

Staying/Waking up at 3 AM *and* having to pay tax on the full price of the phone. Plus, being in terrible state. I guess, things could be worse.

Regardless, I'll be buying one 3:01 (or whenever I get through)

I ordered with ATT online last year because Apple.com was having a lot of difficulties. It was smooth but the network was slow. I received my iPhone on launch day, morning via FedEx.

I know AT&T is only letting you use Facetime over cellular with a shared plan. Does anyone know about Verizon? I just called and the woman I spoke with had no clue and dropped my call when trying to transfer me. Apple doesn't seem to know either...

Skype.

I would not give up unlimited (Fine, 5GB before throttling) LTE for FaceTime over cellular.

Wouldn't the geniuses at Apple benefit from putting this on sale at 12:01 est.?

If this was the case I think they would have more pre-orders from every state east of the pacific time zone.

Hmm, follow-up to my earlier question I asked AT&T. Does anyone know if I'll be able to order 2 phones for 2 different AT&T accounts on one transaction at apple.com? Will the site be able to verify that both phones are eligible for an upgrade during the transaction? I'm assuming I'd need my wife's at&t logon information but that this should work.

Any thoughts or personal experience on the matter are appreciated!

That's kind of surprising. I've got a business account, and I've been able to pre-order from Apple for past iPhones (4 & 4s). It seems to me that they probably just added a note to the account to process the order at some point tomorrow . . .I can't imagine that they can automatically effect the pre-order when they become available. If I were you, my concern would be that they don't submit the request before the launch day shipments are sold out. On the other hand, if that works, then you've saved yourself from a disjointed night's sleep.

They have a new system in place. The sales rep said their new order system will automatically place the order tomorrow when the AT&T clock allows the actual preorder. They ran into snags in the past with taking early orders, so they changed the system used to take the orders. I'm willing to see what happens, because I don't have the time to sit on the phone with AT&T all day tomorrow and I definitely wont have time to camp out this year at the retail store.

P.S. I went on apple.com and checked my upgrade eligibility and it states, "Account type not supported.
We're sorry. The AT&T account you have is a business account. Please contact your company's telecom manager or AT&T account manager to complete your iPhone purchase." If I were you I would check your upgrade availability on the Apple.com website, because you may not be able to order thru them anymore.

You can do this all from home. I would avoid Apple stores like the plague over the next month.

Amen. These are the people who will be disappointed with every iPhone upgrade from now on. What else do they want this device to seriously do?

They want a new phone they buy to have something 'WOW' about it that they can show to their friends to impress them in study hall.

Like,

'see? I can play a 3D movie and watch it in 3D right on the phone!'

or

'My processor has 16 cores! See this page here? See that number - 16? It's a lot higher than 2! It must mean this phone is awesome!'

or

'Look - I have NFC on my phone. Yep - you never heard of NFC before, but I have it, and I'll buy a slurpee at 7-11 with no cash, just my phone, someday. Then you'll think I'm awesome'

I just want a phone with the latest technologies, but not bleeding-edge doesn't quite work yet technology, that works better than Android.

I'm up and running on a new nano sim already thanks to Three. Walked in store and got the new sim along with the adapters so it still fits the micro and normal sim slots too. All I need now is Apple's pre-order process to go smoothly.

If you order on pre-order launch day, it is 99% sure you will get the item sometime late in the day on launch day.

The truth of the matter is that Smartphone technology is not growing as fast as other Tech. Apple could have easily put many more bell and whistles into this phone but they need to save something for next years S model.

The main reason I was hoping for NFC is not because it new, it is because if Apple does it on the iPhone it will force the retail industry to embrace the tech and change the world. I guess there is always next year!

Wonder if I could do this with AT&T? Would certainly make the activation process easier for my wife and I being that we aren't using our phone lines but others on our respective family plans to upgrade.

Personal experience from last year - You'll have to effect it as 2 separate transactions. I had one account open in IE and one open in firefox. Since the server will be way overloaded, F5 key will be your friend.

Wow, thanks for the tip. I'll give that a try this afternoon and report back.
