Staus update from Germany: After 5 1/2 hours, the 5c is still available in all colors and storage options. In the past years, the iPhone 4/4S/5 sold out within 1-2 hours.

They've made more iPhone 5Cs and very early adopters won't be buying 5Cs. The target market for the 5C is mostly not the type of person that orders it within minutes (or even hours) of it going on sale.

Do people still not understand that: 1) the quantity of iPhones they have available at each launch will not always be the same, e.g. more iPhone 5's than 4's [just an example]; 2) this wasn't the main iPhone released, there was two new iPhones released. Not just one new phone like in previous years.

It's 4.5hrs, not 5.5. Sales started at 9am, not 8am.

The plastic looks a better quality and finish than Samsung's cheap look.

It doesn't just look better quality it is better quality. Apple is precision engineering a premium poly-carbonate body unlike the cheap plastic on the Samsung's. Anyone who is holding off buying the 5C because they think it's too expensive should keep this in mind. The 5C is an incredible device.

Actually, I bought the 4s when it first came out and now I've preordered the 5c.

Yes, you're part the new crowd the 5c will create.

This perception in this thread and elsewhere of the 5c being overpriced, is fueled largely by the rumors of a low cost iPhone in the pipeline. Apple never said they were creating one. The tech press, tech bloggers, and Wall Street analysts pulled that one out of the land of Unicorns, fairy dust, and LSD.

Apple is going to have adapt very soon to how out of control the rumor mill has become. In the sense that rumor and speculation has now become fact outside of our nerdy tech world bubble. Rumours and analysts BS viewpoints on what Apple "needs" to do have mutated into expectation. The new level of insanity began with the run up to the first iPad.

Then, earlier this year when Apple's stock price was purposefully suppressed by a fake story run by the WSJ (knowingly) regarding iPhone orders being cut at Foxconn, a group of unsavory investors walked away with billions of dollars. This happened at the same time that the media started banging the Apple is doomed and needs to innovate drum.

Now, again, their extremely undervalued stock is getting pummelled due to expectations pulled out of fantasyland and by a rumor mill that's beating them to the punch.

It used to be that myself and the rest of you that read these sorts of sites were the only ones that knew what to possibly expect. Apple is now so huge and as a result widely reported, that EVERYONE (including my parents) are up on the latest rumours. Add to this the way the crazy WS analyists expectations now permeate the media and shape public expectation....and it creates an extremely problematic situation.

$549 unlocked. That's not a low cost phone.

Looking forward to seeing the cost breakdown of how much these cost to to make. Because as much as Apple want to make money off these phones, I think it's the App Store and iTunes that would make them the most money. So get as many of these into people's hands as you can, wouldn't that be the theory?

I just can't see how someone in India or China could afford one of these. I'm not mocking them when I say this.

Nah, Apple will reduce the price if they have to. I like the idea of the 5C. Creating a product portfolio for iPhone is the right idea. But Apple needed to shake up how they do things. They should have come out and said we have two models now - iPhone and iPhone color. iPhone would be the flagship, premium phone. iPhone color would be the fun, colorful cheaper sibling. iPhone 4/4S would cease to exist. And then when announcing the iPhone color there would have been ZERO mention of the iPhone 5, even if the specs were similar. Don't let the media brand the colored phone as last years model in a plastic case. The 5C is actually a great phone (pricing aside) but its not being treated as a new phone. That's dumb from a branding/positioning perspective on Apple's part. I just scratch my head with what Apple is doing here.

Many people would have figured it out and know regardless. I still wonder how it will work next year, the 5s will end up being the 5cs or something and the older 5c would moe down to the 4s level I imagine.

I have a 5 and typically update every other year. The touch ID and faster chip is nice but as much as I am a die-hard Apple fan, there are two key issues:

1. Next year's 6 needs to come in two sizes, a 4.8-5 inch screen to rival the competitors because people do want bigger, and the current size. And not just keeping the 5S around, but actually offering the new model in two sizes that both get whatever new hardware bells and whistles come along.

2. While I have been beta testing iOS 7 I would have to say that some features are nice, but on the whole there are simply too many mistakes and wrong turns. Getting away from skeumorphism is a good idea, there are still issues with the new iOS. Probably the biggest is the reluctance to make an even larger paradigm shift. This was the first real shakeup and they didn't take advantage of the change to really change. A few features and different colors/icons/styles doesn't count.

Here's to hoping for some real innovation for iOS 8 or 9 in the next year or two as well as with the iPhone 6.

Not everyone wants to learn a new os. Just told a guy about ios7 and was pissed about having to learn all the "new stuff". After I talked him off the ledge he explained that is why he came to the iPhone, so he wouldn't have to do that. Not everyone wants or needs a huge shake up.

Apple has never released a plastic, colorful and successful product that was not cheap.

Never, ever.

The 5c will surely fail and sell nothing and apple will implode under its own mass.

Wow, it's impossible to make so many factual errors in one comment. Come on, do a bit of research before writing...

There is no learning curve between 6 and 7. Again, some people should try to know what they are talking about before writing in this forum

I know you are not mocking, but you don't seem to understand what China is in 2013

Tomorrow's headlines:

"iPhone 5C Pre-Orders sell out in 39 seconds."

Who knew plastic was so attractive?

Just woke up. Not impressed. Why would a phone that essentially has been available for a full year sell out?

It has year old internals and worse build quality (I like how Apple apologists now talk about their scientific knowledge of quality vs. cheap plastic while before the 5c all plastic was junk).

The 5 has been selling for $99 for the last couple of months if you looked in the right places. What exactly is fantastic about the 5c except the color?

1. TOTALLY agree! why they dont just have 2 sizes! its like we allready have 3 different sizes - orig iPhone / iPhone 4 / iPhone 5....its allready a bit size / ppi fragmented...
[/I]

Could be that Apple doesn't want to dump too many changes on Devs all at once. iOS 7 is more than a maintenance or feature add update + if a Retina mini does make an appearance next month then that's another ppi screen format they'll need to add to their apps.

I don't doubt that we will see a larger iPhone next year but sales-wise a Retina mini update is more urgent than a big screen iPhone so it goes first.

AT&T online store accepting orders for 5S on 5/20

If you go to the AT&T website, there is a series of rotating images

The first one offers a pre-order button for the iPhone 5C.

The next image says: "Order iPhone 5s beginning September 20".

What are the specs of the Moto X? Or cheaper Lumia models? They're not the same as high end flagship devices. But do people feel they're being cheated? I don't think so. If Apple had called the phone iPhone color with no mention of the 5 at all most people probably wouldn't have thought "last years model".

Just wondering how many people on these forums, still strongly feel Apple should not make a plastic phone and should totally concentrate on the high end model and that's it.

Just got the 5C 32Gb!

Excited to go from my 5 to 5C since it has a better battery, front time FT camera, and new durable design!

After trading in my phone to Gazelle for $335 and buying this, plus a dock, plus Apple Care...I'm breaking even!

PS - Got it on the App!

Wow lol

I wouldn't be bragging

Since they've just branded the year behind phone, given it a name, and created an official slot for it in the iPhone line, I'd expect we will see an iPhone 6 and a 6c. The name will go with the current generation, regardless of internal components. Like Mercedes, we will have C Class and S Class iPhones.

We'll also see a new look for the C Class iPhones for every major iPhone refresh. iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8.

There's also the possibility that they'll go the iPad route and call the next iPhone "The New iPhone".

Personally I think that would be cleaner and more in line with other products. A MacBook Pro is just a MacBook Pro. An iMac is an iMac.

So...iPhone. iPhone C. iPhone S maybe.

Worse build quality compared to what? Other plastic phones or the aluminum 5/5S? Go read hands on reviews of the 5C from the tech sites. Not one referred to it as cheap (check my sig for an example). Is it as "premium" as the aluminum design? Not in my opinion. But that doesn't mean build quality is worse? No, it just means I prefer the look and feel of the aluminum design. Look and feel is not the same as build quality.

This is the reason I think Apple should have called this iPhone color with no reference to the 5 at all. You want the premium design, but the flagship. You don't care about premium design, or want something cheaper, colorful and fun, get the iPhone color. Apple f'd this up from a branding standpoint, and probably pricing too.

+1, very true. However, prices for unlocked iPhones have gone up in the UK. I bought my iPhone 4s 32gb for £599, but a 32gb 5s is £629. Whereas 16gb has gone up from the the £499 it used to be, to then £529 with the iPhone 5 and now it's at £549.

One person mentions that Apple is using quality plastic, and then you jump to that conclusion? Not all posts are from the same people.
Those color phones are UGLY!
Sorry don't like them.
Yeah I agree when looking at the yellow/pink, but the green isn't too bad and I like the blue/white :p.

WE BUY CARS FOR CASH
It’s never been easier to Junk a Car for Cash.

I appreciate how Tim misinterpreted the market and kept the iPhone small screen and Apple will have to recuperate lost sales somehow.

But surely not crushing cars to make more iPhone 5Cs?

I mean, the only salvageable plastics would be from their dashboards?

:D

This should be interesting, I wonder if they will sell out of pre-orders like they usually do, given they are only doing the 5c.

I will admit, the blue 5c looks really nice, but I just can't spend an upgrade to change colors. It is a very interesting strategy by Apple though, making last years flagship phone "new" again.
