WTF is up with that? I just found that out, too, and I'm searching deep for a possible explanation as to why they wouldn't allow that option and I keep coming up short.
Update from Canada (East Coast)
I was able to order an iPhone 6 in Space Grey 128GB via the app. I just kept hammering the "SIM-free" button to make it refresh, and finally the "add to cart" became active.
This process was the digital equivalent of waiting in a big lineup. Janky!
I got a confirmation email that the phone delivers: 19/9-23/9 by Standard Shipping.

Quite a few people were getting through from about 8:15ish it seems. I'd been refreshing since 7ish this morning, all to no avail. I put in several orders and each time it just went back to the main store page. The Apple Store app would just hang on me.
That's the first time I've bothered to attempt a pre-order; I think it'll be my last.

I was able to finally order iPhone 6+ 128MB Space Gray via the Apple Store App on my iPad after an hour's worth of failed attempts, but shipping dates for all storage sizes and colors on AT&T and Verizon had slipped to 7-10 days. Sprint was the only carrier still shipping on 19th for iPhone 6+.

Same experience with Verizon. Still waiting for the confirmation email.
Upgraded 3 lines from iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 (Gold, 128GB and 2 16GB). Charged $30/line for the upgrade and $134.18 in sales taxes for a grand total of $1024.15. (Already have a reservation with Gazelle that will get me back over half of the cost.)
Weird part is that one line says "with SIM" and the others don't claiming I can use my existing SIMs. I'm going to ask Verizon about that in the morning although I expect all three will activate just fine without swapping SIMs.
After numerous attempts, was able to complete the order for a 6 and a 6+ with AT&T. I was on an unlimited plan switching to 10GB shared, NEXT. Had to switch plans first. When I went to order the phones told me I had to pay up front the first month's NEXT rate plus $40. It's my understanding you are only charged $15 a month for the phone when you go with a NEXT plan and the 10GB or higher plan (a $25 discount from the normal $40 for smartphones). I'm hoping the credit will come down the road because it wasn't shown here!

Called the number provided for order status and if you enter the order number it will tell you that if it has been less than 8 hours since you ordered they may not have the status, and to call back in a few hours.
So, I'm going back to bed with a leap of faith that I'm going to be getting $50 credit (2 phones @ $25), and my confirmation numbers will work later today. . .

It kept saying unavailable on both the iPhone and iPad, but I kept tapping the different options for color & size until I found one that said it was shipping on 9/19 and the blue 'Continue' button appeared. It took many, many attempts though.
Success in Canada. Both using the iPad app!

Placed my order for two white 128 GB iPhone 6+ through the apple store app on my iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. It took a LOOOONG time and many many tries. In both cases, I'm upgrading through Verizon. Kept getting stuck where it says "currently unavailable".
Someone mentioned they switched apps and went back to the Apple store app so I tried toggling between apps and one order went thru finally after 1 hour and 15 minutes of trying and then the other order went through 2 minutes later.
Both show delivery on 9/19/14! U.S. order.
Keep trying! Looks like stock is still available in the U.S. - at least for the models I ordered.

Ordered iPhone 6 Plus 128 GB Gold on AT&T first and then with the Apple Store app using the same phone number and upgrade. AT&T gave me an order number without an email. The Apple Store app showed delivered by Oct 1 - ? or in store pick up on 9/19.
Just purchased a 64 G Space Grey iPhone 6 using the iPad app. Its showing delivery Sep17-19 now
Apple Store was not up and running at 12:01am. Tried within the Verizon site several times, received an error message each time. Finally got through and was able to order the 6+ 64GB in space gray. Delivery on the 19th. Bingo! A little perseverance paid off. G'luck to all who are trying to purchase!

Does anyone know if ups or fedex will require a signature delivery of the iphone? It's getting sent to my parent's house
