And I thought Apple was a company that told us what we needed not reacted to the market.

While many of us delude ourselves into thinking it's all about something else, Apple is company that wants the money. They act or react accordingly in pursuit of the money. Nothing wrong with that (other than the delusion "we" have thinking Apple is about something else).

Apple will choose what we want when they can get away with defining a new market. Once others get very competitive in their offerings, the market starts laying out it's own definition of what it wants. Then Apple either evolves to feed those wants or watches increasingly larger amounts of that revenue go to others.

Often around here people will sling the old Henry Ford, Apple-like statement about black-painted cars: http://www.thehenryford.org/exhibits/showroom/1908/model.t.html When Ford pretty much defined their market, they could get away with that too. But then others stepped in and got competitive, including offering cars in colors other than black. Ford could either hold to what it wanted the market to want or adapt to what the market actually wanted. Is your car black today? Are all Fords still "any color as long as it is black" today?

When Apple introduced the modern smart phone, it could easily get away with deeming 3.5" screens as the perfect size, spinning rationale such as one-handed use to support that perfection. Then, as others started doing increasingly well with "abomination" and "99% don't want" screens >3.5" Apple shifted to 4" and deemed it the new perfect. Then, anything bigger than 4" was the new "abomination" and "99% don't want".

Revenues roar for >4" Android phones (apparently that 1% who DO want bigger screens is an awfully deep-pocketed group ;) ). So Apple again abandons "perfection" at 4" to embrace the new perfections of 4.7" and 5.5". Why does "perfection" keep shifting? Apple follows the money. The profit is clearly in the larger (than 4") screen sizes so Apple went there. Ford backed off the only-black-cars stance too when buyers started redefining the market by buying cars of other colors. Ford also followed the money.

This is stupid. Before the phone was released, I heard about how the 6 plus would sell better than the 6. Then I read that the 6 demand is far greater than the plus. Now I read the plus is 60% of shipments? So it's all of the above? I give up.

Someone is estimating that Foxconn (building the 6+) is receiving more parts than Pegatron (building the 6). According to Tim Cook, it is very difficult to predict sales numbers based on numbers in the supply chain. Pegatron could be using parts that were readily available 3 months ago and might have a stockpile to build 40 million iPhone 6 without getting any more part shipments, for all we know.

I bought the regular 6. It feels too big for me.

Boo hoo tiny hands, get over it. See it works both ways.

Of course you went on about Steve and 2011...... I'm talking about 2014 and all the nay-sayers that said just days before the announce that it wouldn't be made..... Judging from your response you were one of these people?

This is horrible logic. Aside from the fact the bottle won't easily stay in your pocket, odds are if you sat on an unopened bottle it won't break, and you can feel it have some give.

This sort of attitude is why I hate telling people I use apple products. A defect is a defect. Nothing's likely to happen, but we're not allowed to sit on our phones? My god, we always have been...

I've never sat on my phones, tablets or any other tech that I spend good money on. I'm pretty sure phones were not meant to be sat on.......

More importantly

Where's the stat of how many 6 Pluses are being returned within the first 14 days though to move to a regular 6?

There is a problem with that argument: Apple doesn't make decisions based on "what makes the most money". If you look at Dell, they have been doing that all the time, and where are they now. Making decisions based on "what makes the most money" tends to make decisions that are good in the short term, but bad in the long term.

The decisions that Apple makes are aimed at making products that people want to buy in masses, even if they are a bit more expensive than others. They have been doing that consequently for about the last 15 years. That strategy, which doesn't _aim_ at making money, has the nice side effect that it actually tends to make money in the long term.

I don't think you're arguing a different point of view. They are intertwined. At the end of the day - any company who fails to listen to the marketplace will die. That doesn't mean every decision or it's their focus.

If this info is coming from Digitimes it is not to be believed.
They are almost always wrong and just like to see their name in print.
I would take this info with a grain of salt.

Maybe they will place additional reinforcement on the new iPhone6+'s aluminium back and so after 1 year when Apple decides to recall +'s owned by early adaptors due to bending (which Apple will have a convenient rename) there will be enough supply to cover.

We all know that they will just stick the internals of our +'s into an unapologetic plastic body and call it the iPhone6+C, so win/win?

I thought the Plus might be 45-50% but this surprises me.

However, I do absolutely LOVE my Plus.. favorite phone since the original iPhone. It's an amazing product. :)

:apple:

Well you havnt been around too many hot gals with nice backends! Most with skinny jeans that I see have it tucked in promiscuous places.

I don't think Foxconn receiving more spare parts today is a true representation of the breakdown of sales between the two devices. Perhaps they had a better safety stock for iPhone 6 parts and are now just increasing their supplies for the 6+ to meet current demand.

Can't say that I'm surprised that Apple is moving more iPhones then anyone else. They're really not shipping to many phones to the carriers so what do you expect.

I was asked by at least 20 people yesterday if my phone bends. And I'm not exaggerating that number. It's so ridiculous now that when someone sees my new phone for the first time they say "Hey is that the 6 Plus? Did it bend yet?" My response every time " Well you're looking right at it. Does it look like it bent yet?" And I have carried it in jean pockets, no case, sitting in class and driving in my car for sometimes two hours at a time.

Same here.....

Only 9 customers and only idiots would actually try and bend thier device. You don't see Pepsi or Coke giving refunds for you carrying a bottle of drink your pocket and sat on it and break it. Everything breaks and bend some even have #Gaps so we just need to be smart with our device.

Wow, comparing an $800 device with a $1 bottle of coke...

That surprises me! I wonder what the official sales will be when Apple announces their quarterly earnings.

What about the catastrophic bending design flaw though?

My iPhone 6 Plus is still as rigid and straight as when I got it! Put it in my front pockets everyday for hours at a time.

I have no doubt. I was being facetious.

I think Apple probably forecast around 20% for the Plus and it turns out it's more like 30-40%, so they're playing catchup. I'm not sure why it took them so long to release a bigger phone—the premium price would have been a huge boost to their bottom line and curtailed some of the market share advances that Samsung has made over the past couple years. If these numbers are correct, at least it seems like it was NOT too little too late. Luckily Apple is only stubborn to a certain extent.

It's seeming more likely that my estimation is correct: Approximately a third of android users got their device for a bigger screen, a third bought it because it was really cheap, and a third bought it because they actually like using android. Apple is slowly cutting into this space on all fronts. The 5C at free is tempting some people away (in August it was the top selling smartphone in the UK), the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are tempting away a decent amount of larger screen fans, and iOS 8 is giving more functionality, customization and extensibility that some of the people who like android primarily for the software really enjoy. The thing is, most consumers aren't geeks but they have preferences. Some of them enjoy the Google ecosystem, some of them like having widgets and things of that nature, some of them like bigger screens. For many of those people, I would be willing to bet that the deciding factor between choosing android or iOS is razor thin, and Apple is now pushing the needle in their favor with beautiful devices that are fairly easy to use (though seemingly more buggy as of late), come in a variety of sizes and colors and capacities (that are priced more reasonably now), and advanced features tucked away for those who want them.

The other thing is that there is finally excitement again around Apple devices. I work at a university and the first few days after I got my iPhone 6 Plus on launch day, I had several kids talk to me about it in passing. When I was standing in line inside the student union on the 19th I had a small crowd of kids form around me as I showed them the device. Several of them had android phones and said that they are really tempted to switch now. Only one of them was salty, saying it looked like Apple just copied the Galaxy. He was definitely the nerd in the group. Guys like him will always get android just like they always got PCs instead of Macs. There is always that "type" in the world.

I for one prefer my current 5S. The 6 and 6+ are just too large for me. I know we're in the minority (apparently), but we do exist.

I was happy with the 5s form, too.
I got a 6 because, well, because it was new....

But if the 6+ was the only new iPhone I would not have upgraded. Too big.

But then again my phone is not my go-to device for surfing, reading, movies, etc. I have an iPad and TV for that.

It's all subjective.
