I am going to buy a new iPhone but this looks a bit too big for me.. I hope this is not the definitive size. I am not opposed to a bigger size but this is a tad too much for me.

Oh I hope not. The iPhone 5 is already too big.

Agreed.

If they do introduce a big over-sized tablet/phone for the masses, I hope the keep a smaller more svelte phone for people who don't want a big tablet filling up their pocket.

If I want something too big to leave room in my shirt pocket, I go get the iPad Mini, not use my iPhone.

I would absolutely love it if it looks something like this:

With some of these [reasonably expected] specs:
  • 'Air'-inspired design
  • 4.8" 1080p with minimum bezel
  • Quad-core 20nm A8 processor (definitely likely)
  • 2gb+ of LPDDR3 (or even LPDDR4) RAM (necessary!)
  • 128gb storage option (a hopeful and somewhat likely option, I think)
  • 12+ hour battery life (probably unlikely, since :apple: is always so proud to just have "up to 10" while making it "the thinnest phone ever")
  • Improved camera optics/sensor (likely, even if 8Mpx remains)
  • 24+ FPS full-res Burst Mode (highly likely thanks to the recent acquisition of SnappyLabs)
  • Quick Reply in iOS 8 (seriously...its about time we finally get this feature in iOS)
  • Expand the new "Reduce White Point" feature (found in iOS 7.1b3) to be more like the f.lux jailbreak tweak!
I would do my first camp out for this :D

That's one of the most viable/realistic iPhone mockups that I've ever seen, I could easily see this as the next iPhone 6.

Personally I'd love if Apple dropped the scratch-loving aluminum and did something that was scratch resistant (and inductive charging), but this mockup seems consistent to what Apple would use. Very well done :)

The size of the Moto X in my opinion is perfect. I hope Apple releases an iPhone of that size.
I have a Moto X. The big difference, however, is that the Moto X doesn't have a hardware key taking up space at the bottom and a large bezel at the top. It's a lot more compact for its screen size than an iPhone would be.

Maybe about time for you and a few others but even Google admits through their latest Android report for developers most people (over 80%) still use a small screen phone (4" or smaller).

Meaningless statistic. What percentage of that is by choice?

There will be no more iPhone

I really doubt that Apple will release another iPhone. It's time for a move forward. A bigger screen is simply not suitable for a device you're supposed to hold in one hand. Smartphones will go as quick as they appeared. Apple will release the iWatch, well, they won't name it like that, as it has not much in common with a watch. The smartphone is something that everyone carries around all the time. So it is more than obvious that it will transform into a wearable device in the near future. It will be like a wristband with a flexible touchscreen on it, which fits tightly around your wrist. And it will replace the iPhone. These smart watches (like the Samsung gear or Pebble) make no sense, the only application is for fitness, but you can't convince the average person to wear such thing and still carry a phone in his pocket. No, the iWatch is finally a device that you will never forget at home or break by dropping it accidentally. And yes you can leave it on while showering and swimming. Even at night, as it charges wirelessly with a charger you leave plugged in next to your bed. It becomes part of yourself

I have to laugh...

A WHOLE extra 0.8" larger. OMG

A massive screen phone isn't progress! Unless we then have to make pockets bigger to compensate for them!

Funny how millions of people all around the world do it with the current size pockets.

Just because SJ says that 3.5 is the perfect size doesn’t make it so. People also once said nobody needs cell phones then the same about smartphones.

That concept looks good except for the volume buttons, they should be separated. Also the back of the device simply cannot look like that, same reason that the 5 and 5s look the way they do.

Yeah, if going with an "Air" design then a mute switch toggle and buttons more like the iPad Air would probably be better:

But why can't the back look like that? I definitely think a form factor just like the iPad Air would be awesome (just maybe in different "premium" colors like :apple: does, i.e. white/chrome, white/gold, and black/"slate")

If you guys would all stop wearing those ridiculously feminine skinny pants you wouldn't mind a real sized phone.

4.8" isn't massive at all. It's the perfect size for a guy's hands. My iPhones felt ok until I used a 4.7" phone. It's not even close. The larger screen is much more comfortable. I don't think bigger than 4.7" to 4.8" is needed unless you're an NBA player, though. lol.

I think Apple should announce the iPhone 6 (4.8 inch Al) and a iPhone 6C (4.8 inch Polycarb) by June, and then release an iPhone 5SC (4 inch Polycarb) and a iPhone 6S (4 inch Al) in Sept. That way they might have half a chance of meeting demand.

I know a LOT of people that prefer the 4 inch size as they want something small to use (partially due to their hand size) and because they really just want something small to fit in their pocket that isn't so obtrusive, and then there is another crowd that wants the larger screen. If Apple had released two sizes last year, they wouldn't have lost so much business to Scamscum, LG, HTC, etc. because that's a primary reason why a lot of business went the way of Android. I think consumers generally saw the screen size as the deciding factor and the OS wasn't as big of a deal, since they look similar.

I already know several people that went with a S3 that would rather have an iPhone, but the larger screen size was the deciding factor and nothing else.

I think there is enough business to support two screen sizes in both a polycarb and Aluminum, especially if they are 64 bit processors, fingerprint ID, especially if the colors are better looking than the iPhone 5C's. I think the colors aren't as rich as they should, I think more saturated colors and less of the pastel would be a better selling product.

They can always have the iPhone 4S 8GB or 16GB around for the low end market if they dropped the retail price for unlocked for about $350 or so. Hopefully they can still run iOS 8, when it comes out, and if it is still profitable.

I am in the camp of thinking these phones are too big. I nabbed a 4s so I can have the 3.5 screen for a while. My preference overall still favors my old trusty flip phone which I may revert back to, since at times I even find the 4s annoying to carry around. May be an old school mentality of course being a late 90's early 2000 teen; got along just fine without a smartphone then and can still do it now.

The larger screens are nice, but they still are cramped when looking at content. 7 inches and above starts to be good for me, but that is tablet territory. The Kindle paperwhite is 6.5 I believe and that works well for reading books. I know some phones have hit that 6.5 inch mark but I certainly wouldn't carry that around in my pocket.

For comedic value I kind of would want to see phones become a minimum of 7 inches and above in the future just to see the ridiculousness out in the wild. 27" phones etc... :p

I really think that all this screen size discussion is silly unless we're talking about resolution. Apple's been known to stick to one resolution and to scale things by doubling said resolution (be it iPhone 3G --> 4, iPad 2 --> 3, even retina mini).

Figure out how they're going to go about resolution, and you'll have your answer.

I think if they go bigger, they will likely double the resolution of the current iPhone 5/5S. That'll give it more pixel density than the other handset makers.

Don't care for bigger size

Honestly I'm probably one of the few that doesn't want a bigger size. I am very comfortable with the current form factor. I don't want a tablet in my pocket. I feel like there should be a choice of the current size and the larger size.

I actually do a good bit of making fun of my friends that have those gigantic Samsungs.

While I can see its usefulness for some folks, i just don't think its for everyone. But, if they offer the current size AND the larger size, with the same hardware specs (processor, memory, etc), then I'm all for it.

2 sizes

I hope apple also ship a top of the line phone in two sizes... not everyone wants a larger screen.

I like the 16x9 ratio... I've got an iPad if I want 4x3.

Or why not allow the iPad Mini to be used with voice calls? Not just a data SIM?

Foldable / flexible

Thank goodness it will be foldable / flexible, so I can fold it in half and it will still fit in my pocket.

Just by comparing it against Moto X, it's only 0.2 inches wider and longer and Moto X has a 4.7" screen. The top and bottom bezels on the iphone are huge, the side ones are not narrow either. There are a lot of room to have a 4.8" without drastically increase the footpret.

I agree, they can probably reduce the bezels to save room. The side bezels, IMO, alone can prob be reduced by 50% on each side.
