I have to laugh...

A WHOLE extra 0.8" larger. OMG

A whole extra 0.8" is very significant. It means a display nearly 50% larger, 44% to be exact.

Just because SJ says that 3.5 is the perfect size doesn’t make it so. People also once said nobody needs cell phones then the same about smartphones.

SJ never said 3.5 is the perfect size. Somewhat like "you're holding it wrong" it's a meme made somewhere on the internet that spread over.

Instead he disparaged the large phone calling them "Hummer" phones. If you know anything about Jobs' history, if he really criticizes something there's a good chance he's working on making something like it behind the scene, unless it's netbook, and no, the Macbook Air isn't a netbook.

Screen size sounds just about right. And for all you haters, once you use a phone with a reasonable screen size, you can never go back to looking at a tiny low-resolution screen.

I use a 4.7" phone and a 3.8" one daily and much prefer the 3.8" size. If anything I'd like the old 3.5" size to stay, so much more convenient for one hand usage, especially as a camera or an MP3 player.

After using a Galaxy Note or S4 you'll never get back to a smaller screen. It's very comfortable for typing and reading.

After using ANY Samsung device you definitely will go back to a better product, like an iPhone 5s ....

Btw 4.8" are pretty much the limit I don't want to pass in my next iPhone. But this is just a rumor.

1- 802.11ac is a "nice" update, but i don't know many people who can't get what they need speed wise with what is out there already.

2- Camera More of us want a better camera. really! sony's 20 sensor megapixel is looking nice.

3- Memory it would be awesome to get more memory for your $$. maybe add a micro sd card slot on the bigger model.

NSA SPYING ISSUES:
4- IOS phone data encryption- Can we please encrypt the actual phone and data on it??? enough is enough, some Apple users want privacy and anyone can pull everything off a phone they want if they know how. Blackberry has encryption on the phone and MicroSD card. why not Apple?

5- Battery- and .... now that the NSA spying scandal has broken out.... can we please get removable batteries. Many of us like the idea that we can turn a phone off. really off.

People who are lucky enough to have Google Fiber or some other fiber optic internet provider will be able to take advantage of the new 802.11ac. One day (fingers crossed can get it soon) everyone will have 1 gigabit internetz!!:D:D:cool: And one day the iPhone 6 will be the low end phone still and people can take advantage of speedy wi-fi at home.

bla bla bla

everybody now keeps saying how this screen will be too big

Beaut!!

I would absolutely love it if it looks something like this:

Image

With some of these [reasonably expected] specs:
  • 'Air'-inspired design
  • 4.8" 1080p with minimum bezel
  • Quad-core 20nm A8 processor (definitely likely)
  • 2gb+ of LPDDR3 (or even LPDDR4) RAM (necessary!)
  • 128gb storage option (a hopeful and somewhat likely option, I think)
  • 12+ hour battery life (probably unlikely, since :apple: is always so proud to just have "up to 10" while making it "the thinnest phone ever")
  • Improved camera optics/sensor (likely, even if 8Mpx remains)
  • 24+ FPS full-res Burst Mode (highly likely thanks to the recent acquisition of SnappyLabs)
  • Quick Reply in iOS 8 (seriously...its about time we finally get this feature in iOS)
  • Expand the new "Reduce White Point" feature (found in iOS 7.1b3) to be more like the f.lux jailbreak tweak!
I would do my first camp out for this :D

Ok, that rendering is awesome. The rendering gives the iPhone an edge-to-edge screen, or at least the illusion of edge-to-edge (like the HTC One). Me likey :D Having the iPhone 6 look like the iPads right now brings a sense of continuity across the devices. I like your specs too. Well thought out. I'm very hopeful for these specs.

I'd camp out for this too!! :p:cool:

Oh and one more thing, It drives me NUTS that the volume control buttons on the iPhone and iPads are on opposite sides!! Why cant they put them on the same side as each other?!?!?!?!:mad::mad:

So you browse there forums to feel superior? :)

On topic: Bigger can be better, although I don't care as I rarely use my phone for anything else than phone calls. Maybe that would change with a bigger one, but then I prefer at least +7 inches. (for display size)

Personally I'm fine with a bigger model. But my wife and many of her friends? They refuse to get a bigger iPhone. My wife still complains that her iPhone 5 is too big in her pocket compared to her iPhone 4. They're going to have to do some serious bezel shaving if they want to get this thing down to size for many women who have small purses, hands and pants! I know not all women care, but many do.

I wish they would make it wider again. I liked the old iPhone aspect ratio. I want it back in 3:2 but in a larger size.

I kind of feel like rendering an iPhone 6 mockup. I used to do some 3D modeling work back in college in Lightwave. Not sure if that will run on my current setup. Anyone know if the 3D in Photoshop CC is any good?

If I can comfortably use the phone and be able to touch the entire area that is useful on the screen with 1 hand ONLY. I can really care less for the screen size.

Of course, then I would need to worry about getting it in the shirt pocket and keeping it there when I am not using it...

Especially if you have dealt with their customer service or technical support...(The technical support makes me feel like talking to a 5 year old who has no idea what is going on at all...)

Let's not forget the curved glass around the sides and liquid-metal.. I think the new design will blow away any other model or mock-up

Quad cores aren't likely. Chip makers are moving away from having quad cores in phones in favour of fewer threads clocked higher.

Just curious, as I'm someone who really doesn't follow mobile phone technology like a lot of people on here, is an edge-to-edge screen physically possible on a phone? I've been seeing the rumors for a while about it, and just curious what the general consensus is.

I think this rendering looks great though! Even though the rendering is missing the Touch ID sensor hehe.

4" and 4.8" iphone 6. I am about 99% certain they will never get rid of 4". There are people who want the smaller device, and people who want the larger device, with the former making up the vast majority of those. Similar to how the iPad Mini with Retain and iPad Air have the exact same internals, the iPhone 6 4" and 4.8-5" will have identical internals, the only difference will be physical device size.

Another possibility could be a 4.8" iPhone 6 slightly larger than the 5s and a 5.5" iPhone 6. I think the 4" iPhone will be the successor to the 5c with 5s specs including Touch ID. So we might get 3 screen sizes, the smallest with last year's specs.

And I think it's why Apple is trying to introduce a Back gesture. They're too invested in the idea of "one button" to use a real Back button, like every other smartphone OS on the planet.

All, um, three of them.

Seriously, though, I think you’re probably right. And I prefer gesture based interfaces anyways.

4.8" iPhone is just right for me! I wish they release the 802.11ac in the iPad Mini Retina but they did not! Just hope they reduce the price to be competitive. Don't want to spend another $900 for an iPhone in less then 1 years time. But I like the bigger screen and the upgraded Wi-Fi! Hope they bump the storage to 128GB and RAM to 4GB. Then it will be set for 64 bit operations. 4K screen resolution is a must too!

SJ never said 3.5 is the perfect size. Somewhat like "you're holding it wrong" it's a meme made somewhere on the internet that spread over.

I believe Steve's replies varied from: "Just avoid holding it in that way," to "Just don't hold it that way."

Ugh. I'd rather have a 3.5-inch screen. Those giant Notes are a joke.

10 million people don't think so. :)

Tens of millions think otherwise.

We spent the whole of the 90s and 00s getting phones smaller and smaller... now they are turning into beasts... where the hell do these people keep them?

Back when a cell phone was simply a speaker, a microphone and a rudementary display the size of a wristwatch... yeah... they made them smaller.

But now the brilliant full-color LCD display is the centerpiece of a smartphone.

REEEEEEEAAAAALLLLLY, I never knew that. :roll eyes:

I understand that... the point is I don't want a 5.9" phone in my pocket. They are massive... and I am not blind... and if I want a bigger screen, I move it closer to my face.

5.9-6.0 is a rediculous size..Most do not want that size..as is reflected in their sales when compared to phones in between the 4-5 inch screen size. The sweet spot (if one needs to find one for ONE DEVICE satisfies all kind of thing) is probably slightly north of 4.5 inch in my opinion..as this device will keep the competition at bay and still keep the loyals (those that want a size closer to 4) relativly pleased given other things are improved....

Anything larger than 5 inches warrants a fresh UI that clearly throws a set of features at the consumer based on which he/she can evaluate as to whether the added features/capability are worth the size and make that trade off. Samsung has done exactly that by giving the Note family its distinct S-Pen feature over the S4/3 family. Its tough to justify otherwise..I think apple will do as the analysts claim (a 4.7-4.8 phone) and keep on exploring a phablet like device that delivers unique features and UI for the user looking to make that above mentioned tradeoff. I think such an INNOVATIVE product could drive profit margins higher if done as a seperate category (price it 100-150$ higher than your iphone 6 )....

I really think that all this screen size discussion is silly unless we're talking about resolution. Apple's been known to stick to one resolution and to scale things by doubling said resolution (be it iPhone 3G --> 4, iPad 2 --> 3, even retina mini).

Figure out how they're going to go about resolution, and you'll have your answer.

I think if they go bigger, they will likely double the resolution of the current iPhone 5/5S. That'll give it more pixel density than the other handset makers.

Note that in all of your examples of retina transition, the screen size remained the same between the non-retina and retina version. The iPad resolution is not a multiple of the iPhone resolution.

When Apple used 2x, it was so that developers wouldn't have to make major changes to their UI code as iOS took care of multiplying legacy coordinates by 2.

It worked because the PPI was also increased by the same proportion, keeping UI elements the same physical size on the screen.

What you're proposing is doubling resolution but not PPI resulting in a bigger screen size, which negates the advantage of not having to redo layouts.

It would result on a different, non-multiple minimum size in pixels for touch targets and buttons which would mean unprecedented work for iOS developers.

As of now, a dev can use the same exact button size across all iOS devices (doubled or halved automatically by iOS depending if they use virtual or real pixels in their code). I don't think Apple will want to break that when 95% of users wouldn't be able to notice the increase in PPI anyway.

Simply keeping 326PPI and increasing the resolution to make a bigger screen would mean much less work for devs than what you propose.

The larger screen size would be nice for these reasons:
- iOS 7 interface is already crowded for the screen size of the iPhone 5/5S/5C
- Larger battery - longer battery live
MacRumors clearly knows what their users like to read and comment on: a larger iPhone screen

I am more interested in upgrades like the AC Wi-Fi and other hardware improvements in the cloud services.

I have confidence that whatever Sir Jonny Ive designs will be done in great taste. I've used big and little phones. The sweet spot for me would be a 4.5 inch screen with double the resolution of the iPhone 5s. Slim down the bezels and it can work. Just look at the moto x even tho it has a 4.7 inch screen. I can't wait to see what's new in ios 8. My upgrade is next month and it's gonna burn until September lol.
