It's not that much bigger

moto-x-vs-iphone-5-4.jpg

Just by comparing it against Moto X, it's only 0.2 inches wider and longer and Moto X has a 4.7" screen. The top and bottom bezels on the iphone are huge, the side ones are not narrow either. There are a lot of room to have a 4.8" without drastically increase the footpret.

Thank god, my hands have been growing uncontrollably. It's time for a bigger phone. /s

Hopefully they'll keep the old size as well. However, this will sell like hotcakes.

In all honesty, I'll just try and see how it fits. My wife already complains from the 4s to the 5s that she can't reach the top left corner easily anymore. And that's where a lot of apps' back button is.

Yeah, that's why Apple's "Common Sense" commercial used a LEFT hand to show how "easy" it was to reach the upper LEFT with one hand:

On Android, with a hardware back button, it makes more sense.

And I think it's why Apple is trying to introduce a Back gesture. They're too invested in the idea of "one button" to use a real Back button, like every other smartphone OS on the planet.

I would absolutely love it if it looks something like this:

With some of these [reasonably expected] specs:
  • 'Air'-inspired design
  • 4.8" 1080p with minimum bezel
  • Quad-core 20nm A8 processor (definitely likely)
  • 2gb+ of LPDDR3 (or even LPDDR4) RAM (necessary!)
  • 128gb storage option (a hopeful and somewhat likely option, I think)
  • 12+ hour battery life (probably unlikely, since :apple: is always so proud to just have "up to 10" while making it "the thinnest phone ever")
  • Improved camera optics/sensor (likely, even if 8Mpx remains)
  • 24+ FPS full-res Burst Mode (highly likely thanks to the recent acquisition of SnappyLabs)
  • Quick Reply in iOS 8 (seriously...its about time we finally get this feature in iOS)
  • Expand the new "Reduce White Point" feature (found in iOS 7.1b3) to be more like the f.lux jailbreak tweak!
I would do my first camp out for this :D

If they use the 1704x960 resolution then there will be no compatibility issues with apps at all, and at 4.8 inches that's 407 PPI.

Some Thoughts

After having for 2+- years the iPhone 3G, 4, 4S, and loving each one, I recently moved to the MotoX, its screen size seems perfect, you just cant go wrong with it, and trying to use an iPhone 5 afterwards the screens seems like a complete mistake, it feels like you're using a sausage phone, one does not simply return to a tiny screen!! so a bigger screen will be welcomed, the real thing here is how the iOS will look, you see i took a screenshot of my 4s homepage and send it over to my MotoX , well things get funny, that's gonna be the real challenge.. making the OS look all right on a decent size screen.

The scale in the pic just doesn't look right.

A Moto X, for example, is not much bigger than an iPhone.

Edit: Whoops, someone went there already. :D

Yes!! YES!!! YEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!

I'll believe it when I see it. This would be a massive issue for app developers.

'Massive' issue. well if app developers sees scaling apps as a massive issue, mane they shouldn't develop apps. i wonder if android app developers have the same thought with different aspect ratio......

Ah interested, I didn't consider a 3x approach. That might work.

It's much you didn't consider... of course it might work. look at the android market.

Nope. All they need to do is increase the size while preserving the aspect ration and decrease the PPI, similar to what they did with the iPad mini compared to the iPad, but backwards.

@kdarling: Wait, didn't you update to iOS 7? This is exactly what they did in iOS 7, introducing a back gesture by swiping the screen from the left edge to the right. It's my favourite feature of iOS 7, as a right-handed person can't simply reach that back button on top. Also, it's way more elegant than Android's back button

You believe Apple wont increase the resolution?

Thats is highly unlikely.

Oh I hope not. The iPhone 5 is already too big. And what's the point of larger screens anyway if you don't gain screen real estate?

That's why I never bought an iPad or why I don't get the difference between the iPad mini and the big one. It's not that more fits on the screen. It's just bigger. Big deal.

And I don't want a phone that doesn't fit in a shirt pocket any longer.

Can't wait to see all the one-handed users bitch and whine lol. Hopefully they release this iPhone in June, and not the fall.

Why? Are you a sociopath?

Seriously, if they make it bigger than the 5 I don't know what I'd do, might have to switch OS (and I really don't want to). I'm hoping they release a range including bigger and the current size (the old size seems like wishful thinking).

I hope Apple do it right this time. Keep the same size for those that are satisfied with smaller iPhone and add another 5inch iPhone for people that's been waiting forever for it. I am at the breaking point with Apple, 5inch this year or goodbye iPhone for me. Current iPhone is too small for my big hand. >_<

I agree that when you get an Android device, it's like a performance lottery. You can get a fast firmware at first, then updates that slow it down... or sometimes the contrary.

I'm on my third firmware update (4.0.4, early-4.1.2, late-4.1.2). At the time of updating from 4.0.4 to early-4.1.2, I instantly noted a slow down, but with this ultimate 4.1.2 I installed, it's running even faster than 4.0.4, it's like a brand new phone even when using latest Google UI improvements (Project Butter).

But I agree that Android phones are like Windows PCs as both come loaded with bloatware. If you are on the geek side, it's pretty easy uninstall all that mess on both Windows and Android (for the latter, I use TitaniumBackup in a rooted device, so I can easily uninstall or disable all BW from Samsung and Google).

This is why my last purchase was the Moto X. Even AT&T branded it only comes with a couple of apps I don't want .. but they are so small it doesn't bother me. It isn't that samsung loads it with bloatware apps, but just the fact that TouchWiz has all of these annoying visual doo-dads that make the device super sluggish. The UI has been a problem for them for years.

Any more physical buttons other than what are currently on an iPhone are utterly and completely idiotic. A back gesture is 100% better in so many ways.

Even though I have been happy with my 4" 5s, I wish they would go back to the 3.5" screen as it was just perfect. I see no need for a phone the size of a tablet. If you want a tablet buy a tablet.

See, for me it's the other way round. The 5 is already to big for one-thumb operation to reach all the little stuff hidden in corners. If they turn it into a big ghetto-phone with no alternative (and "no alternative" seems to be what has replaced "think different(ly)") I may have to find something else.

It's the risk we all take jumping on the Apple bandwagon. They get to decide on a whim and know best. No options. Buy more and adjust your workflows and other hardware or leave.

That concept looks good except for the volume buttons, they should be separated. Also the back of the device simply cannot look like that, same reason that the 5 and 5s look the way they do.

It always amazes me when people say "Apple is done" if they don't X. Do you have any idea how much money Apple has? Do you understand how many people buy iPhones? If the iPhone 6 sold 25% of the amount of iPhone 5s, Apple could easily say "Oops" and recover. Apple has way too much money for a single product failure to ruin them.

You are right, they can easily take a hit as a company in the short term, but their position in the smart phone market would suffer greatly. Consider Android is eating away Apple's marketshare, their stronghold is falling, and this would just catalyst that.

I've personally been considering switching to Android just because of the larger screen (and inductive charging), it's so much more comfortable and liberating. I've been seeing a ton of people going for Android simply because of the larger screen. Theverge and other tech publications are all clamoring for a larger screen.

Note that investors are already weary on whether Tim Cook can keep Apple on the innovation edge, we saw some signs in the stock market reacting to that last year. If Apple stays stuck in an old form factor it'd be a huge hit in Apple's credibility as the innovator. That's why I described it as Apple is done, it'd mean Apple is out of touch and losing vision.
