Having spent time with an S4 I can say fitting something that size in your average pocket isn't a problem, well it wasn't for me. So for me a 4.8" iPhone sounds very nice.
One handed use on the S4 wasn't a problem either, and I don't have big hands. But I can also see how some people with smaller hands, like my fiancee, would have a bit of trouble with one handed use. Catering to everyones liking will never be possible.
Not sure if they will keep the 3.5" model if they do release a bigger i6, but I'd imagine they'd keep the 4" as the alternative to the larger phone.
Time will tell.

Even better, make them customizable. Nicely integrated, better durability, no tacky case. If Motorola can pull that off, Apple can too. It seems odd they haven't yet, aside from the rainbow of colors the 5C comes in. Personalization, of the outside since you can't personalize the inside, is such a huge part of owning an iPhone that you'd think Apple would capitalize on that.

I'm not even sure they need to go as far as motorola but give me something. Why should I pay essentially $600 or more for a beautiful device only to cover it with $20-30 of plastic (or more for the otterbox people). They can be durable and beautiful at the same time.

and what's the point of having 802.11ac in a phone?
g or n is doing the job perfectly fine, and can do it for many years from now on.

What's the point of LTE in a phone?

HSDPA+ offers speeds of up to 40+ Mb/s, which is plenty for a phone I think.

For having a small screen phone?

Probably not that exactly .. using an S4 is a painful experience because of the terrible UI Samsung refuses to give up on. TouchWiz is so terrible at everything except making the phone run like it's a few years old. If you're going to use an Android device, get one running stock or 99% stock (moto x, moto g).

When they 5 came out didn't apple specifically point out that 4" was just right since most people could easily handle it with one hand? Isn't doing this contradictory?

In all honesty, I'll just try and see how it fits. My wife already complains from the 4s to the 5s that she can't reach the top left corner easily anymore. And that's where a lot of apps' back button is. On Android, with a hardware back button, it makes more sense.

Tell your wife to swipe from edge to go back ;)

I'll admit I have small hands, so these large phones just don't work well for me, but I understand those who do have larger hands liking the larger screens.

Personally I am hoping there is still a 4in option or ~4.3in if they remove the bezel. Personally I would kind of like the phone to be a little narrower, just keep the 4in screen and remove the bezel and it would be a great phone for me and then offer the larger 4.8in model for those who want it.

Not saying your point is insignificant, but on that note my hands are disproportionately large (I'll literally shake hands with basketball players and have bigger hands although they are significantly taller than me.)

Can't say I've ever had issues with the screen on my 4S... or the smaller screens/keys that were used by my old Nokia/Japanese phones. That said, I'm quite skinny so the tips of my fingers are quite slim/precise when touching keys.

4.8 would be conservative. When I compare my Moto X to my iPhone 5S, the X really isn't much larger. Quarter of an inch wider, fifth of an inch taller, and they packed in a 4.7 inch screen.

Apple could go even bigger if they wanted, the X is still a small phone:

Absolutely agree. I think that mockup is what’s scaring everyone. Apple is much better with design than that.

BTW I was an owner of the original iPhone and most of the generations that came afterwards, and after trying out a Samsung S4, you have to try it to believe it.

The first time you try a browser on a bigger phone you feel an immense amount of comfort and relief. Years of constraint and restriction on the tiny iPhone screen instantly becomes obvious.

The bigger iPhone is guaranteed to happen or Apple is done, and I agree with the guys from the verge that have the same prospect on it.

Now that everyone's on board with larger screens and thinner bezels I don't know what to complain about.

Oh never mind here's a list:

1. web based itunes that works as well as soundcloud, with grooveshark-esq play any specific song etc.
2. a non-nerdy apple email address, @imail.com with a website that would act as a springboard for calendar, email, notes, photostream, findmyphone, iwork spreadsheets, music/tv content subscriptions. With an insanely simple interface (zero polish, like craigslist, wikipedia, a tumbler blog, take it back to 1993 html).
3. make cloud storage, music, and tv content a zero profit endeavor, and use it as leverage to sell devices.
4. create an iphone app that would "passively chronicle your entire life" and allow you to recall all activity on a specific day in history. This would ensure life long customer loyalty.
5. make a tv that is beautiful and transparent when off.

If the 4.8 screen size is true I won't be upgrading to the 6, I like the fact that my phone can fit into my pocket and isn't bulky!

You're crazy if you think a 4.8" phone is bulky and won't fit in pockets, haha. Hell, even my 5" Nexus 5 gets lost in my pocket at times.

Saying that, a 4.8" iPhone will get me back on iOS.

After using the iPad Mini for about a year, my iPhone screen does seem small. I would be very happy with a screen this size, and it might make me sell my iPad mini.

This is just BS

there really is no new info here. some analyst claims a screen size of 4.8".

It's a reasonable guess.

Ac wireless --> duh

Mobile payment NFC --> good educated guess. Makes sense with TouchID.

I don't think this analyst knows something we don't.
NFC not necessary for mobile payment

An adjustment for sure, but not a massive problem. Imagine trying to develop for all the Android handsets out there with screen size being just one in a hundred variables to consider when optimising your software.

Android has better support for layout management than iOS. In other words, it's easier to build an app that automatically adjusts to different screen sizes in Android. Apple added support for layout management in iOS 6, but it's still pretty difficult to use compared to Android.

So, if it has an x3 resolution, universal apps will ship with 5 versions of each sprite/image used in the app.

1. iPhone standard resolution (1x)
2. iPhone retina resolution (2x)
3. iPad resolution (1x).
4. iPad retina resolution (2x).
5. iPhone 6 resolution (3x).

This is why apps take up so much storage space. After installation, iOS should delete the resources that are of no use on the device it's installed on.

I agree that when you get an Android device, it's like a performance lottery. You can get a fast firmware at first, then updates that slow it down... or sometimes the contrary.

I'm on my third firmware update (4.0.4, early-4.1.2, late-4.1.2). At the time of updating from 4.0.4 to early-4.1.2, I instantly noted a slow down, but with this ultimate 4.1.2 I installed, it's running even faster than 4.0.4, it's like a brand new phone even when using latest Google UI improvements (Project Butter).

But I agree that Android phones are like Windows PCs as both come loaded with bloatware. If you are on the geek side, it's pretty easy uninstall all that mess on both Windows and Android (for the latter, I use TitaniumBackup in a rooted device, so I can easily uninstall or disable all BW from Samsung and Google).

Sounds great all this new iBeacon stuff and passbook...

nah who am I kidding? Apple can't even implement quickreply its getting old

It's time to grab some iPhone 4s while they're still being sold as new. The phablet trend continues, so you better be prepared. Don't buy used ones, they might have been killed by iOS 7, the 4s WLAN killer.
Or save money and collect iPhone 4.

Or, Apple should encourage developers to use resolution-independent resources, like SVGs. Bitmaps were probably necessary for performance reasons with earlier iPhone hardware, but I'd guess that current hardware would be able to handle vector graphics.

An iPad mini comes to mind for you.

I hope they also keep a smaller from factor, I hate these big things. If I want an iPad I sue that and not a phone which is too big or an iPad that is too small...

Didn't we have that discussion already with the original iPhone...?

we all did. Didnt change the fact that it's not good for consumers. People just realized the iPhone, Despite an obvious drawback, is worth more than that con.

i know I generally prefer removable battery devices. But sometimes, A device is sexy and sleek enough, its an acceptible compromise.

That is what I believe happened with the iPhone.

It always amazes me when people say "Apple is done" if they don't X. Do you have any idea how much money Apple has? Do you understand how many people buy iPhones? If the iPhone 6 sold 25% of the amount of iPhone 5s, Apple could easily say "Oops" and recover. Apple has way too much money for a single product failure to ruin them.

And please Apple: change the boxy iphone4-5 design, it's practically a brick in your pocket, we need bigger screen and smoother/curvy design, something along these lines:

But make it Kevlar or something else that's scratch resistant.

I completely agree! A curved edge feels better on the hand and in the pocket.. I loved how the iphone 3GS felt! Plus even though it was thicker it looked and felt slimmer compared to the iphone 4 and 5.
