There is no way Apple will release a 4.8" iPhone. Look at past iPhone releases. 3.5" display then they went to 4". I predict they will keep the 4" and release the iPhone 6 in 4.6" maybe 4.7" but never 4.8 not now...it's too big of a jump from 4" and Apple never takes that big of a risk on a product that has served them well all these years.

the jump to a 4.8 inch screen is possible for one handed operation but not like we're use to it now. What if they added a trackpad to the home button along with touch Id. The sensor already uses a capacitive ring around it expanding this would be ideal.

In fact they already applied for the patent.

There's no risk. I'm sure they'll keep the 4" phone along side it.

Elitist snob

4.8" is fine

But I would love to see them build a high end phone that scale back to near 3.5" from a 4.8" resolution perspective.

Build this small phone to be truly mobile with beautiful finish and made of high quality materials. Hope they draw inspiration from say Tiffany & Co. or Miele. Charge this phone a grand or more with no option to contract buy. This is the phone I will buy. We should not expect this to sell in quantity, but it will sell a little more than say the Leica M9.

Imagine trying to develop for all the Mac computers out there with screen size being just one of a hundred variables to consider when optimising your software.

Imagine trying to develop for all the Windows computers out there with screen size being just one of a thousand variables to consider when optimising your software.

It never ceases to amaze me when iPhone people bring up this point like it will be the end for developers. Developers have been dealing with this kind of fragmentation on the desktop for decades, now when it comes to mobile it suddenly represents an insurmountable challenge?

Hey, I'm not subscribing to the insurmountable theory here either. All I'm saying os there is a lot less fragmentation on the Apple side of things, so the challenge is relatively smaller.

Android has better support for layout management than iOS. In other words, it's easier to build an app that automatically adjusts to different screen sizes in Android. Apple added support for layout management in iOS 6, but it's still pretty difficult to use compared to Android.

It might be easier, but the end result is too often inferior. Optimised software is specific and not compromised by trying to be too many things.

Assuming that this 'analyst’ isn't totally pulling this info out of their arse, would we then expect the ‘iPhone 5CS’ to be the only product that retains the 4” screen?

Merely my personal opinion, but I’d like to see the next ‘C’ iteration go big and maintain the iPhone 6 at 4” as the premium device.

You're right. The big iPhone will have the plastic casing and will be the 'C' iteration due to lower than expected sales of the current 5C. 'iPhone 6' will stay the same size and the same premium build.

Trust me, I'm an analyst ;)

That's way too huge.

Edit: Oh well, I'll still buy it! :D

It should be noted that the graphic shown in the article actually depicts a roughly 5.3-inch display. I've quickly drawn up a comparison for better scale. Personally, I'd be OK with 4.5 or thereabouts. But the iPhone 5 display does seem tiny in comparison to other flagship devices, and is one of the few advantages Android handsets hold in the eyes of a mainstream audience (most don't really care about running Bit Torrents or endlessly fiddling with their home screen layout).

If I know Apple, they will test 50 different sizes and choose the one that is juuust right, the way they size the iPad and iPad Minis.

Another individual that does not get that market share is only important to Android users and analysts. Apple will continue to enjoy the higher profit margins even with smaller market share. They have continued to sell more phones each quarter despite a shrinking market share. Google and Apple have completely different business models, market leaders HTC and Samsung are to Google as staples are to Bostitch and Swingline. Google cares very little about who makes Android devices as long as they continually fall in price making them available to increasingly more people. Google makes money from eye-balls not by developing the OS with the largest market share. The market leader for Android-based devices a decade from now is very likely not even showing on the radar. We have not even begun to hear from the Indian sub-continent.

The data is very clear on user behavior, despite the larger installed base of Android, iOS devices owners consume more bandwidth, visit more websites, and spend more on eCommerce per handset. Google touts these stats as a reason to use their mobile ad-network. Google is VERY happy to see a growing and healthy iOS ecosystem.

I didn't mean for my comment to be interpreted as simply a matter of profit margins and monetary stability, a lot of companies can survive just fine and be profitable with mediocre products, in some cases just copying someone elses product.

The point is that Apple is currently in a frail position when it comes to its future as the innovating leader. That position is now eroding, in part because the differentiating gap between iOS and Android has consistently been narrowing.

Users are now making phone purchase decisions more on to screen size and other hardware features, and less on whether the phone runs iOS or Android.

Again, just to give my personal preference, I'm seriously considering switching to Android simply for the great hardware that companies like Samsung and Moto are putting out there. I have friends that have switched to bigger phones because of the screen and hardware. Highly respected tech publications and the trend online that I've been seeing all clamor for a larger phone form factor.

Of course just making a bigger iPhone is not going to guarantee that Apple stays as the market leader, they will need to keep innovating on other fronts. But if they neglect it, I just can't see how Apple could remain credible. It'd be akin to Apple refusing to offer an iPad Mini, which initially Steve did refuse to do it. Thankfully they've adapted and now it's extremely popular.

A 4.7"/4.8" iPhone is long overdue. I used an S4 for 6 months after owning an iPhone 5 from launch and I greatly preferred the larger screen. In fact I thought the 5" was just a touch too large and 4.7"/4.8" is probably my ideal screen size. Apple is making a smart move here. I should be clear that I believe they will also retain the 4" model. Just a question of if or when they release a phablet, which I think they should. But right now the 4.7"/4.8" is more important of an addition and I absolutely believe it will come this fall.

Thank god, my hands have been growing uncontrollably. It's time for a bigger phone. /s

In all honesty, I'll just try and see how it fits. My wife already complains from the 4s to the 5s that she can't reach the top left corner easily anymore. And that's where a lot of apps' back button is. On Android, with a hardware back button, it makes more sense.

iOS 7 allows you to swipe from the left edge to go back in most of their native and a lot of third party apps. Maybe that's one way Apple is preparing us for the larger screen size.

From those concepts, the iPhone looses its symmetry with regards to the top and bottom bezel. I don't think Apple will do that. But on the other hand, they put themselves in a corner by introducing that TouchID sensor, under the home button. If possible, they should have it built in under the screen, and have the screen go edge to edge as much as possible. That would real innovation, and leave the competitors far behind.

At first i was thinking that the phone looks a bit unreasonably big, but then i held my sister's S4 and its not at all that big to begin with.

I think this would be a welcome product.

I have to laugh...

A WHOLE extra 0.8" larger. OMG

That's coming from my tiny htc to a new iPhone so only 0'8? No. I'm not a complainer but I have tiny hands so a bigger phone isn't ideal but I am open to it.

well something was bound to change and soon screen size will stop being the main factor of change -- well for androids

I would absolutely love it if it looks something like this:

Image

With some of these [reasonably expected] specs:
  • 'Air'-inspired design
  • 4.8" 1080p with minimum bezel
  • Quad-core 20nm A8 processor (definitely likely)
  • 2gb+ of LPDDR3 (or even LPDDR4) RAM (necessary!)
  • 128gb storage option (a hopeful and somewhat likely option, I think)
  • 12+ hour battery life (probably unlikely, since :apple: is always so proud to just have "up to 10" while making it "the thinnest phone ever")
  • Improved camera optics/sensor (likely, even if 8Mpx remains)
  • 24+ FPS full-res Burst Mode (highly likely thanks to the recent acquisition of SnappyLabs)
  • Quick Reply in iOS 8 (seriously...its about time we finally get this feature in iOS)
  • Expand the new "Reduce White Point" feature (found in iOS 7.1b3) to be more like the f.lux jailbreak tweak!
I would do my first camp out for this :D

impressive and so in touch with what apple should propose :)

I didn't say there's no place for a 4" iPhone. If I was an Apple executive, I would keep the classic form factor, but would add the newer one to the portfolio. I just said you'll feel very comfortable with a bigger screen. I rarely carry a phone in my jeans pocket, so 5" is not an issue. Also at winter or in colder countries you usually wear a jacket.

Moreover, I wouldn't restrict my digital experience just because of a pocket size. There are other ways to carry a phone (jacket pockets, briefcase, cargo pants, etc). As a bonus, you won't need a tablet anymore (at least a mini tablet like the iPad Mini).
I'm all for more sizes for the iPhone, just as there are 3 sizes of MacBook and 2 sizes of iMac and iPad. As long as Apple doesn't drop the more "mobile sized" 3.5" or 4" iPhone model from its lineup, I don't see myself switching to a different ecosystem.
I'm a enthusiast of convergence. Someday I believe we'll have a smartphone that can be used as a desktop computer. Just attach a HDMI display on it and you'll have an all-in-one computer.
Sounds good and we're almost there but I hope that, by that time, we will have get rid of cables altogether.

The developer's will adjust. It's not that big of a deal. It was bound to happen one day.

RIP people who don't like progress and change.

progress is making the screen bigger? I mean come on.. if that is your idea of progress then get one of those android phablets, since they are so closely tied togeather.
I don't care if the offer a bigger screen, but leave a reasonable screen option for the people who don't want a giant phone..
