I hope they get rid of the flat hard back. Moto X has it perfect! Such a comfortable phone to hold and behold.

If they do update the screen size I hope they don't go daft. 4.5 to 4.7 inch is about right IMHO. And if screen is increased, please utilise it more with the OS. Main screen currenrly being unorganised apps, notification screen spread across 3 tabs, and a separate control centre is all wasted. Put notification back to one page, put controls as a swipe to the left. Put all apps into alphabetical order under an app launcher (yes, like android..or rather like Mac OS X) and allow the home screen to be a bit more personal. That does not mean widgets.

Then maybe bring the price back down to £499 or £450 would be nice.

I look forward to iPhone 6.

why is everyone obsessed about big phones? I hope that Apple will either release two models where one is current size and one is bigger or that they will come up with a solution that will create bigger screen without making the device too much bigger.

in 2000s every phone manufacturer was trying to make phones smaller so they would fit anywhere. Now, because its smartphone market it seems that everyone is going back to the massive ones. I don't understand the people around me that are on the phone with something so big that looks like iPad mini.

I want a phone that is light, fits in my pocket and is not a burden to carry around. If I want bigger screen then I will use my iPad mini. Am I the only one who doesn't get the "bigger" madness?

The "analyst" who said the design is locked down at 4.8 inches is probably right. Tim was almost giddy when talking about the "great" things coming. Apple needs a bigger phone to compete in the world market, especially Asia. The next Iphone will have adequate battery life, and a great screen. I switched from the Ip4 to the Galaxy S4 for the screen size. I felt a little cramped when I switched back to the 5S, but all the overwhelming features of being within the Apple system, made it so worthwhile to come back. I won't be switching to Android again. And I will be online early for the 4.8 inch Iphone!!!

About damn time, the current iPhone 5 screen is too small even for basic web browsing. You spend more time zooming and re-aligning the screen to match the small screen real estate, that it's not worth the effort. Apps of course are designed to take advantage of that screen size, but web pages are a PITA. 4.8" sounds perfect, and for those complaining that is too large, buy another phone or smaller version. The minority do not dictate to the majority and when you use a larger screen device its hard to go back to anything smaller.

Also, remember a larger phone means a larger battery, which in-turn means a longer runtime. I hope Apple start using OLED instead of old-school LED based displays. I also hope and believe Apple should dump Gorilla Glass for the glass covering, and use Sapphire Crystal which is almost scratch proof and a long stronger and fingerprints hardly appear and extremely hard to crack or break and adds to the "premium" quality of such an expensive phone, and no need for any fancy "oleophobic coating" which eventually wears off.

While I agree that a phone should be as small and light as possible the problem with the iPhone's size is that it's no longer suitable for simple web browsing. We had web pages that were optimized for 800x600 by that time, but today's layouts use at least a width of 1024 pixels if not more. I get claustrophobia when I use my iPhone for reading newspapers.

It's a good thing Apple isn't making a 5.9" phone. ;)

But phones larger than 4" have been making the rounds for the last four years or so. There definitely is a market.

Sure.. was responding to past rumours at end of the Original Post ( 5.7 not 5.9 )

Would be happy with <5"... well my wife appears to be ;)

Recently I switched to Nexus 5 Android phone (after iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5). I really enjoy the large, beautiful 1080p 5" screen. Yes, iPhone was easier to operate with one hand, but I don't care. One hand operation is still easy for basic tasks (like answering phone), but two hand operation is great and enjoyable on the large screen. And since Nexus 5 has very small bezels, in reality it's only a little wider than iPhone 5 and that's it. I like the big screen. 5" (or near 5") is basically the sweet spot for me (but definitely not any bigger). 4.8" would be a great size for iPhone 6, imo. Just curious what they will do to improve iOS...

I'm actually surprised how smooth, polished and advanced Android now is (my previous in-depth encounter was from ~2.0 era, when it was ugly and laggy). And all of the important (for me) third party apps are fast, stable and polished too. For example, Facebook seems much faster and generally better than it was on my iPhone 5.

This started only as an experiment for me while my iPhone 5 is in warranty repair (camera issues - purple dots on all photos), but now I'm not even sure I'll be switching back to iPhone as my primary phone (because of work I use two phones). I will ONLY consider iPhone 6, if it has 5" or near 5" screen AND there are some major improvements to iOS 8. I'm sorry to say, but Android currently feels more advanced to me. I love (quality) widgets, notification system is way way better, I like the overall design better.

PS - Apple imo should definitely keep the 4" size too, I'm sure many people are not like me and want a smaller phone.

Only a larger screen will make me come back to an iPhone.

All the people grumbling about it being too big don't need to buy it. You are not the center of the universe, there is a market that doesn't include you

Sure but as I said - great make 2 sizes of iPhone 6 but the specs need to be the same... apart form battery life.

Don't go down the S4 mini route - which was such a con. Utterly different to an s4

I hope they keep a normal-sized version available as an option.

That's fair... just like the 11" vs 13" MacBook Air. Basically the same specs but different battery life.

Jon Ive has said:

"We felt strongly that 7.9" was exactly the right display size. But it became clear that we had to reduce the width of the borders so you can still pick it up and easily use it with one hand."

If Apple says an almost 8" device can be used with one hand, then certainly they'll be willing to say the same about anything smaller.

One handed use on phones and tablets can mean totally different things..People using phones are often using them on the go and the usage may involve a lot of typing. With the Ipad mini people do not usually use it while walking and definitly don't use all its functions with just one hand. Try writing an email with one hand on the mini :)

I don't want this. I really really really hope they still offer the 5S screen size too. I want a phone that will fit easily into the pocket of my jeans and not feel super bulky and too big, and that I can easily use with one hand. The 5S is at the limit of this for me.

yes...the 5S and the 6

Wouldnt surprise me if those are your two sizes

What's needed is a 6 with the 5S screen size.

I'm 100% with you buddy.

I'll believe it when I see it. This would be a massive issue for app developers.

Developers for Android and Windows Phone devices seem to be able to manage a wide variety of screen sizes and resolutions just fine.

I LOVED the X's Active notifications! Too bad the camera wasn't the best and while KitKat is vastly better than anything Jellybean and lower (IMHO), it still wasn't quite there enough to make me use the Moto X full time.
Yeah, the camera is a disappointment. It's not the worst cell phone camera, but when you consider that Motorola went through the trouble of putting in a unique, and larger sensor specifically to try and improve on the typical weakness of cellphone cameras, it's a fail. I'd rather they just sourced the same unit Apple is using in the 5S.

I'm probably going to stick with Android as my primary go-to phone for a while. It's got it's own quirks, but after getting burned by the playskool iOS7 design and the frequent reboots and other instability, I can't really convince myself Android is worse. Certainly my Moto X has been a great everyday phone, I've only had to reboot it once since I've owned it, and the only app to crash is Chrome two or three times.

Like I said in another post, I wish the manufacturers would do less suing and more stealing of ideas :). Android has some great ideas, as does iOS, I don't want to have to choose which features I give up when I pick a platform. None of these software features are patent-worthy.

Also, remember a larger phone means a larger battery, which in-turn means a longer runtime.

However with that, also remember a larger screen means screen time will consume more battery time so the offset will be small. Remember when Apple went from the 4s to the 5 the screen increased but the battery size went down instead of getting stronger. This was an opportunity missed, here they had a chance to increase battery to give exceptional results. I wouldn't have minded a little more weight on iPhone 5 in exchange for 3 extra hrs of battery.

I almost believe that Apple keeps the battery small on purpose...if they created a battery to last 14 to 15 hrs a day it would put all the companies like Mophie out of business. Motorola was the only company that became serious about all day battery, the driod maxx HD with a battery to last 32 hrs on a single charge. I'd never leave Apple and buy a driod but what I'm saying is larger battery is possible and evident, Apple chooses not to use this technology but to keep small battery to last 6 or 7 hrs tops.

Has it been noted that the current iPhone 5S happens to have a front piece of glass that is exactly 4.8" in height? It's possible that there is a misunderstanding causing this rumor OR that possibly Apple is looking into a display that uses up significantly more of the glass area while minimizing bezel. I really hope that's the route they take - by minimizing the bezels, they could fit a 4.8" screen into a device that is barely larger than what we have today.

I don't understand the people around me that are on the phone with something so big that looks like iPad mini.
Have you really looked at an iPad Mini? Even a note 3 is nowhere even approaching the size of an iPad Mini, so I think you're getting too worked up about it. Nobody gives me a second glance if I'm holding a Note 3 up to my head, because it's actually not noteworthy, and that's one of the biggest phones you can get right now. Apple could easily do a 5 inch screen without bumping the form factor up that much, other manufacturers are certainly doing it already. And most people don't talk on their phone these days anywhere near as much as they text or surf, so a 5 inch screen makes a heck of a lot more sense than a 4 inch one.

I want a phone that is light, fits in my pocket and is not a burden to carry around.
Hell, I can do that with my Note 3! My Moto X is almost exactly the same size as my iPhone 5S while sporting a 4.7 inch screen. I think you're worrying too much. If Motorola can make a really nice, compact 4.7 inch phone, Apple can too.

No please! Of course the iPhone 6 comes in various sizes I'll be happy but if it's only 4.8" ......

I'm guessing that the resolution will have to be 1704*960, to maintain backwards compatibility with apps. If that were not a concern, then I'm sure Apple would go with 1600:900 or even 1080p.

By "Use it with one hand" they meant "Hold it with one hand"

He specifically noted having smaller bezels so it could be used with one hand. And showed the thumb scrolling.

Larger bezels would make it easier to hold.

One handed use on phones and tablets can mean totally different things..People using phones are often using them on the go and the usage may involve a lot of typing. With the Ipad mini people do not usually use it while walking and definitly don't use all its functions with just one hand. Try writing an email with one hand on the mini :)

That's why (e.g. Samsung) phablets often have a setting to enable one handed use, which makes the keyboard smaller and come to the side that your thrumb is on.

It can also let you resize an app to be smaller and under your thumb.

I still think that trackpads could make a come back. They're very useful for one-handed usage. (I loved the optical one on the first Droid Incredible. You could scroll like crazy with the tiniest of flicks.) Apple has noted using the fingerprint sensor for that purpose.
