Excellent! Now please, hop on over to the HTC or Moto store and purchase one of their phones. Stat! I know for a fact there's one over there waiting for you with your name on it.

I feel the same way, would still be using the original iPhone if they would have just put more ram and a faster processor. Maybe a little bit thinner, and still support iOS 9.

Why is it these forums are always full of sarcastic people whose responses are basically a form of "Love it or leave it." Guess it's why i try to avoid the forums nowadays

I was saying the new phones are $100-$200 more than the current 6 models, though, since the prices of the former generation products always goes down after a new phone is launched.

I don't think that is a fair comparison. The new iPhones have way better innards at the same price as last year's.

From an end user's perspective, none of that stuff even matters, because the iPhone 6 and 6 plus were plenty fast for most people. You basically get force touch and a faster phone (not that the last generation was slow), and that's not worth $100 more.

Very astute observation.

A great degree of Apple’s success is in its superb marketing. If the competition was only half as skilled as Apple the numbers would be very different.

Agreed. In combination with the longer preorder period, we also know that the redesign model years create a higher demand simply because of their redesign in addition to some new features. China was included in the last two S-model years at launch (5s, 6s), but left out of the most recent redesign (6 and 6 plus).

Apple obviously knows how many phones they sell in every country, and can add (or subtract) countries as necessary to hit a certain target number. Furthermore, they probably have a pretty good idea of how many phones they could sell if manufacturing, inventory, and distribution would allow it...they know where the ceiling is. And naturally, they want to be able to announce every year that they broke the record. So all their knowledge allows them to pick a new higher target number, add as many countries as necessary, and build launch stock accordingly. I suppose it could be even possible that they sold 14 or 15 or more million, but choose to only announce launch sales of "more than 13 million", which was possibly the target number. Rather than attempt to jump straight to some maximum sales number, they choose to shoot for a 2-3 million launch increase YoY, which will make them look good, and is attainable and fiscally-responsible in both manufacturing and distribution.

It's only because of the 2GB Ram, as has been discussed to death in the other thread.........
Wait. What? You think that many people were waiting for 2GB of RAM. Don't get me wrong, it is better; but your understanding of demographics is concerning.

The high expectation is not driven by Apple.

As they stated it went beyond their expectation.

I am also wondering how much further this can go.

By now almost everybody in the world must have a smart phone, plus
where do the handme downs go? (Yes, but how much family can you have? Even the kids want the latest)

When we see the first pygmies with an iPhone instead of bow and arrow we know the end is near.

Apple and carriers are part of this high expectation. They give people zero-interest loan to buy phone. technically, they throw money out the street for people to borrow.

so yeah, This record is driven by Apple, at least partially.

Still it's probably more a function of supply than demand. Go to that tracking website and the earliest ship date is 10/5. Seems to me Apple is selling them as fast as they can make them.

This high demand is artificially inflated with zero-interest loan offered by Apple and carriers. This is a new uncharted territory that we've never seen before.

We have car loan, home loan, now phone loan. Hence we have a new thread topic "apple loan caused headache for some"

Shouldn't be a surprise 6s and 6s plus sales exceeded last year's 6 and 6 plus sales since this year's number includes sales in China while last year's didn't.... something which the author and Apple fails to mention.

A more fair comparison would be to show sales of the 6s and 6s plus vs sales of the 6 and 6 plus using only the locations/countries the 6 and 6 plus were available in during launch weekend.

Even that wouldn't entirely work because sales in those countries were probably constrained due to millions of units that were sent to China and other launch places. The estimated 2 to 3 million sold in China would no doubt have sold in the U.S. if available here during the weekend.

Really first weekend sales numbers is a production and logistics achievement and not very telling in terms of demand. We know Apple basically sells every phone it has available through the first weekend. And pre-orders are backed up all over the world. Scalpers are lining up at stores in the U.S. to buy and ship. Sales would have been 20 million on launch weekend if the phones had been available to sell.

As Apple has said in the past, they don't know what demand is until they reach supply/demand balance. That might not happen until next year on a global basis.

They could easily have included 2gb ram last year. come on, you know this.
Based on the ifixit they could not - you might be thinking of PC sticks of RAM you can easily add. Looks like A9 is build on a new architecture as that's why they were able to pack more RAM onto the chip.

Given the lead times for this and what Ive said on the Wired interview - they are on a 18-24 month cycles on these phones.

The latest Samsung phones have 4K video, 2K screens, 15nm chips, fast charging, wireless charging, and other upgrades The latest phones have been upgraded from plastic to glass, and you have the option of choosing a curved screen or the traditional screen, which are more useful features than 3D touch. I'm not a fan of Samsung phones, but it's hard to ignore the obvious.

The latest SONY phones have a 4K screen, two days of battery life, a metal/chrome design, waterproofing, and more.

Apple hardly put a dent in anything exciting with their phones this year.

All that superior hardware, and they cannot even come close to the numbers Apple puts up in the sales column.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that Apple knows what they are doing, whether you like it or not.

A little bit of both ofcourse. Apple sets the production capacity in such a way that it will be able to meet demand, but not by too much. Producing too much = money lost, producing too little = money lost.

Yes, but that production capacity is set for the estimated year's worth of production. They don't ramp up manufacturing plants during launch month and then mothball them for the next 11 months out of the year.

This will be interesting as well, since Apple times the iPhone launch across 2 financial quarters (with the launch weekend in Apple's Fiscal Q4 and the remaining launch surge in Apple's Fiscal Q1). It only makes sense for Apple to limit supply for the launch weekend so that it can meet the Q4 (and annual) financial goals and let the rest of the iPhone sales drive the following quarter/fiscal year.

I don't think Apple runs its company that way. They shouldn't care about the daily/weekly stock price. It is nice that it works out this way, since it smooths Apple's financial results. But I do not believe they are holding back phones or shipping them early just to achieve some financial statement manipulation.

We won't really know the demand for this phone until next year. I think demand is going to be really strong though. But mainly because of the Apps that will come and take advantage of the powerful processor. And with the build quality seemingly so good, these phones will probably be floating around in the used market for over five years.

What does that mean? How does supply influence demand? What do you mean by saying that "it's probably more a function of supply than demand?"

I did buy for the wife a 6S after she spent 3 years with a 5. But as a android fanboy I'm holding out for Nexus news tomorrow. Anyone else doing the same?
And I do own a ipad Air 2 and love it. So I don't play favorites.

You said "3D touch is already saving me time as I can 'peek' at links embedded in emails without having to actually click-following the link and then go back to email." Is is that much of a mental challenge to open and app and close it - really?

He said it saved time. Why don't you drop your 'mental challenge' straw man and discuss the feature based on its actual purpose of saving time?

So Tim, since you're in a mood to share Apple sales details, how many Apple Watches have been sold?
I wasn't aware that new Watches launched this weekend. Apple didn't tell us how many iPad mini 4s were sold either. Who cares.

I mean Apple is selling them as fast as they can make them. That's why when you go on Apple's website the earliest shipping date is 10/5.

Yes, and the ones before that had...what? So incremental spec updates are more exciting than actual functionality? It's funny how mixed up the messages are - either the S updates suck because they are just speed updates or they suck because they aren't. Which is it?!

A curved screen is not useful in a world where smart watches exist and concreted cracks the glass. The new iPhone would win the drop test vs. all of those phones...and wtf are you doing with a 4K screen anyway?

Regardless, go take a look at performance and battery life. The 15 nm chips and fast/wireless (oxymoron) charging aren't helping Samsung even catch up to the iPhone 6 and in many cases they're still losing to the 5S in benchmarks. But hey, 4K right?

Always keep in mind that this is posted by people who have an iPhone 6. You'd have to be quite extreme to upgrade from 6 to 6S. I'd think the upgrades are 2% from iPhone 6, 60% from iPhone 5/5c/5s, the rest from iPhone 4/4s and older.

2% i'm not sure about that mate, me and many of my friends have upgraded every year since the first iPhone, it's definitely a hell of a lot higher than 2%, especially for us that don't bothered to be tied in with data plans in the UK and buy the phones sim free.

Really? Apple has been selling more phones every single year. These installment plans haven't been around that long.

Loans that most people were rejected for anyway.

Well respected TV website reviewers are still debating if 4k is even noticeable on a 70" TV never-mind a 5" smartphone. No one on the face of this earth can benefit from a 4k screen on a mobile devices, it's nothing more than marketing and specs sales.

And there's a post drawing on various sources on Cult of Mac showing how the 6s is twice as powerful as every other smartphone on the market at the minute - best to save the gimmicks users genuine don't benefit front. 3D Touch is fantastic to use, 4k in a phone will never ever be useful and I very much doubt Apple will go past their retina specification as it quite rightly serves no purpose or benefit.
