I have to say this again every year. The only reason they keep on breaking the record is they keep adding countries every year. It's all about the papers and Cook is the real opportunistic here. Get all the attention from the media and Apple will be all over the news for a couple days. I can walk to Apple Store today to get an iPhone 6s no problem except for the rose gold.

THIS. Apple is a master of psychology. While there are some out there that see through their smoke and mirrors, many out there do not. This new "sales record" is nothing more than Apple manipulating several things to make things look better than they are. Once again, it's something they're good at, and until people actually realize what's going on, it's not going to change.

Because it's not a feature that's required - it's purely a gimmick. If you need shortcuts to use a phone you should not have a phone - simple.

huh? pretty much everything to do with the UI is a shortcut in some form or another.. i mean, the entire point of a graphical user interface is to make things easier and faster for most people to use.

like- push an icon and the app launches.. that's a shortcut to launch the app.
on a mac, do you launch apps, move files, etc via icons/keystrokes or do you do everything via Terminal?

i basically understand your whole spiel as saying "there are the exact right amount of shortcuts in the UI right now.. any more shortcuts/enhancements are unnecessary.. the pinnacle of computer UI has already been reached"

which is, to say the least.. an incredibly shortsighted pointOfView.

How can they make something look better than it is? A sale is a sale. Apple is selling every 6S and 6S Plus they're making right now. If China wasn't included in wave 1 those phones would have been sold somewhere else. Go to Apple's website and the earliest ship date is 10/5 for any model/configuration. Most 6S Plus models are showing shipping estimates of 3-4 weeks. If demand wasn't there the ship dates would be 1-2 business days not 3-4 weeks.

really... we got subsidized from carriers previously. that is the reason why I upgrade every two years. without subsidizing, I would keep my phone longer, like my ipad. my situation should not be applied to general public but ipad sales dipping the last two years would tell you the story.
OK so either way most people weren't paying full price for the phone up front. I'm not sure why installment plans would be artificially creating anything. On the last earnings call Tim Cook said the install base upgraded to the 6/6 Plus was still very low so it's quite likely that there are a lot of 5/5S owners upgrading now.

How do you explain the 50% more sales last year to 75M in the quarter... That was extended into the next 3 quarters with 30-40% more sales each quarter... Did they start selling on the moon, AKA new market, last fiscal year to get those numbers?

70M extra phones of manipulation...
Those people bought phones just because Cook told them to?
Cook is one powerful dude. His Kung-Fu is strong...

Doesn't quite fit twisted narrative does it?

Samsung must suck since they're beat even though Apple isn't "really" selling more phones... (sic) according to you.

BTW; most people buying Apple products don't give a crap about sales number so they don't need to "realize anything".... That's left for the conspiracy theorists.

I bought mines Saturday and returned it Sunday. Just not worth paying $1150 cash for it (6s+ 128gb plus applecare and tax). Its a nice phone, but not at the price they are charging, didn't seem like a big enough upgrade from my 6+ that I had previously sold. Just ordered a Note 5 today 64GB from ebay for $650 which I've heard very good things about. Apple needs to get serious with their pricing now that contracts are going away, I can't see people spending $800+ these days for a phone.

So the quetion is, is the 13M a function of supply? Is Apple selling them as fast as they can make them? Or is there slightly softer demand at launch?

Based on the website below , which tracks Apple Store shipping dates in major launch countries, the earliest ship date is 10/5, lots of 10/19, some 1-2 weeks and the 6S Plus is mostly showing 3-4 weeks out. I tried to reserve a 64GB space gray and only a handful of Apple stores were listed as being available to reserve. My state wasn't (and it has 5 Apple stores).
Unless Apple is counting outstanding orders as sales that indicates that the 13 million is limited by how much they have managed to produce.

There is always the other side of the coin. Since the iPhone 6s(plus) still is supply constrained, Apple also manages to make more every year.

Yeah, $700-900 for a smartphone, even a premium one, doesn't seem right in 2015. With $199-299 iPhones going away as carriers will most likely drop all contracts, even for current AT&T/Verizon customers, people will pay closer attention to the true prices. I expect people to hold on to their iPhones an extra year or two, depending on the battery.

Somewhere in Korea...Samsung is crying

Correction: Everywhere in South Korea... Samsung is crying.

(Except their semiconductor business, which is Samsung's only department growing in either revenue or profits. Last year they overtook Samsung's mobile division. This year, they will be even further ahead, thanks to Apple).

I agree, It will take much more value from apple to get me to come back. No reason to pay $1300 for a 6s+ or $1200 for a 6+ when I got an LG G3 brand new from my carrier for 60$.

Impressive. I find it annoying that the only thing I actually want from the 6s over my current 6+ is the 2gb of ram which Apple should have included last year. Frankly, I dont feel like supporting their actions by hoping over to the 6s... I wonder how much real world faster the 6s would be over the 6 if they both had 2gb ram...

I have a feeling that the 6/6+ was supposed to get 2GB RAM, but a shortage or some other issue prevented that from happening. Anyway, the 6s/6s+ is a performance beast. I just discovered that the single-core Geekbench 3 score of the 6s is slightly higher (2522) than the multi-core score (2507) of my 5s!!!

Geekbench 3

5s
Single-core 1393
Multi-core 2507

6s
Single-core 2522
Multi-core 4403

I'd probably say the 6 Plus takes that title. The 6 wasn't too bad in terms of performance.
Right! I sure don't think its too bad!
I run music software and controller apps and have never had a problem.
I get that some people need to have multiple tabs open and the refreshing is a problem if you are copying
from one tab to another but, those people that need more than 3 or 4 open at a time have to be in the vast minority?
I will still be upgrading to the 6s as I want the latest and it doest cost anymore up front just continue my contract.
The best software comes to the iPhone first and sometimes not to android at all so until that changes
I will stay with the iPhone :)

Wow - - only $60 compared to $1300!!!

It will be interesting to see later in the year if demand stays as strong as normal considering China has been moved to the first round of countries. Obviously given the wait times they are selling as many as they can make, but will that continue as long as it used to considering that the demand from China is being taken care of now rather than a few months from now?

Don't you think you should include Samsung's prices in that equation too? A new 64GB Note 5 isn't going for much less than a new 64GB iPhone 6S at retailers. You got a Note 5 on ebay for $650.. I got a 64GB 6S for $100 more from Apple. Then again, I guess the 6S+ is more the Note 5's equal.

Anyway, I'm with you on the prices being ridiculous. I never thought I'd pay nearly 800 for an iPhone. But now I have the freedom of owning an unlocked device, and I can sell it in a year if I want and upgrade to the 7 for a fraction of what I paid the first time around.

YA, is was $360 but I had a $100 credit from my carrier and I got a $200 Walmart gift card. In the end I paid around $60. To keep my plan an get an iPhone 6+/6s+ it would be me between $1129-$1269 or $1300 to $1500 after tax without any GC.

I think you might be a genius.

Are you suggesting that if they make the phone available in more markets, to more people, they may actually sell more? Has any other company thought of this business model? ;)

Alas if the demand was not there it wouldn’t matter how many countries the iPhone is offered in on opening weekend. They still had to sell 13 million phones from a global population of 7 billion people.

I wish I am a genius sorry but I'm not. I'm not saying that this completely affect the overall sales. This is actually a smart move for Apple to keep them in the game. All I'm saying is the numbers grow on the launch weekend sales because of added countries. They do this when necessary but I don't think they'll add on the iPhone 7 when it release next year. The reason is it's a new looking phone and a lot of people will upgrade during that time. Apple just do this breaking their record every year because it sounds good for their stock and the market. If they don't people and market and tech analysts will start talking about Apple is becoming irrelevant. That people are no longer interested and that would affect their overall sales.

It's too bad Samsung hasn't disclosed any sales figures for the Galaxy S6 or Galaxy Note 5 recently. If they were selling as well as the iPhone, then you can bet they would be boasting all over the internet. But hey, they can probably convert iPhone users with their recent advertisements and desperate promotions...not :p

I think it's time for all the "Apple is doomed!" people to start saying "Samsung is doomed!"

phones are now your go to computer. I dont see myself not upgrading every year as long as my career continues.

And IMO apple provides the best & most hassle free phone. Glad to see the upward movement in sales every year.

I like your post. This is exactly what I think it should be - although I still purchase iMac and Macbook everyyear just because I love them... but iPhone has been go-to mobile computer for as long as I can remember.

They're probably selling them as fast as they can make them. Otherwise the wait times would be less.

The trouble is, that still doesn't give us details about actual consumer demand.

Remember: initial weekend sales are mostly to retailers stocking their shelves by guessing how many they need. Therefore we won't know what actual consumer demand was like until the next couple of quarters, when we find out from inventory vs. sell-through numbers if retailers had overbought and thus ordered less later on.

Also remember that pre-orders are not really part of initial weekend sales, and thus will still add onto the sales total when finally delivered, which is good. However, this year Apple failed to give a pre-order value, which normally indicates soft consumer demand.

Wanting to do things faster is being lazy??? Smartphones are built around people wanting to do things faster/easier. Before smartphones, you had to wait until you got to a computer to check your email. Are people lazy for wanting to see their email on their phone and not waiting to get to a computer?

Is is that much of a mental challenge to open an app to read the contents and close the App - honestly?

No one said they needed 3D touch to use their phone. You don't need an iPhone. A 2005 BlackBerry would still do all you need.

Again, why do you care if people like it when no one said you should?

I know why: trolling...

Because I want people to see how lazy they have become and realise it.

It's certainly not a gimmick.

3D touch can be extremely useful and convenient. For example, games.

Just give it some time. It's just been launched.

Why would I want to play games on an iPhone for - it's a phone and use it for sms and photos, not gaming.

Why are you being such a tool? Enough already.

Im just showing how lazy people have become and a re-branded shortcut is classed as a feature. Apple are running low on ideas. Nokia had this years ago.

Everyone needs to report this troll and get him banned.

LOL. Im not trolling Im trying to get people to realise they think a shortcut is a feature and obviously believe the OS is too complex to handle without it.

So what if it is a phone and not a tablet. A lot of people find it useful. If you happen to not like it, don't use it. But I doubt you even have a 6S/6S+

You are making a generalised assumption with no data to back this up legitimately, beyond here.

Blame the technology I don't know about you, but for me anything that make my life easier is good. I can do other things on any extra time saved.

So let me guess, with that extra say 2.5 seconds, what else could you have done? If time management is that bad for you, a phone is the least of your worries. Life being easy makes people lazy - fact.

He said it saved time. Why don't you drop your 'mental challenge' straw man and discuss the feature based on its actual purpose of saving time?

Let me guess a grand total of under 5 seconds - so what would you do with that time instead - enlighten me. Time still keeps ticking. There is a perceived purpose based on marketing, but it's a re-branded shortcut - that's it.

You remind me of my grandfather who insisted that no one needed a heater in their car in Orlando Florida. He wanted manufacturers to make a model without the useless heater instead of making him buy a car with a function he insisted nobody needed.

Again its a perceived "feature" by way of marketing when in fact it's just a re-branded shortcut function. If you are that devoid of time, you need to improve time management.

I understand what you're saying. When they started selling computers with mice I was against it. Anyone who can't type a command on their computer screen was too dumb to use a computer, I told them. Nobody listened to me and look what happened, everybody using computers all over the place. All of them too lazy to type in a command.

For text input a keyboard is always your fastest entry point, especially if a touch typer. The mice was the quickest method to get around the screen - two completely different functionalities. Again if anyone is devoid of so much time that a couple of seconds for a shortcut makes a "big difference", they need time management issues resolved, not a re-branded shortcut.
