Can you not accept that others like these features and just move on? Using them is not mandatory and neither is owning an iPhone. You don't like iPhone, don't buy it. Don't like a feature on your phone, don't use it. It's a simple thing really. I like many others really like 3D Touch and find it useful. It seems as though other people liking something you don't, in your mind has to be illogical and unreasonable. Think about that for a minute. I don't like beef. Does it make everyone who eats beef illogical or unreasonable? No it doesn't.

Some people like Android, some Windows, some iOS, some BlackBerry. And you know what? There's not a thing wrong with that. Different people, different tastes, likes, needs. Again, not a difficult concept for a 'reasonable', 'logical' human being to comprehend.

I agree with your point about iPhone features. Nicely put!

Regarding beef, I DISagree. It IS illogical and unreasonable to eat beef. For every burger you eat, a bazillion gallons of water is necessary. Plus here in California a ton of water is wasted to grow insanely thirsty crops to feed cows crowded into sprawling bovine mosh pits. The logical and reasonable choice would be to eat chicken. Or better, veggies.

Side note --

A buddy of mine just put a new battery into my iPhone 4S. It works almost like new. It cost $20. Part of me wonders how many of the 13M really NEEDED a new iPhone. That's a lotta carbon to make and transport 13M phones!

Full disclosure: I'm a lazy hypocrite who owns AAPL and sometimes snarfs down In & Out burgers (number 2 w/ fries animal style).

This is certainly a sign that iPhone sales are reaching saturation. If this year's launch followed the same specs as last year's, I am sure that there would have been a decrease in overall sales. But the addition of China and the extra 6 days of pre-order window is certainly what made the "record" possible.

iPhone 6 timeline:
Announcement: Tuesday, September 9, 2014
Pre-Order Start: Friday, September 12, 2014 (3 days later)
On-Sale: Friday, September 19, 2014 (7 days after pre-orders started)

iPhone 6S timeline:
Announcement: Wednesday, September 9, 2015
Pre-Order Start: Saturday, September 12, 2015 (3 days later)
On-Sale: Friday, September 25, 2015 (13 days after pre-orders started)

China was included in the 5S launch and that was 9 million.

True but they still had to sell and fulfill 13M orders by launch date but your point is valid. There an extra 6 days of “pre-ordering” allow for more sales than the previous year’s metric of “opening weekend”.

Alas the only numbers that really matter is the quarterly and yearly fiscal report sales. By all accounts they will sell more phones quarter by quarter, year on year.

I wonder how much longer it will be to get the sold out iPhones now that China is also included in distribution. All the 6S+'s are gone in every size and color.

I need a new iPhone. Still on the 4, which is now 5 years old. Time to retire it, as I limp along with it. But nearly $700 CAD + a 2-year contract? That's really hard to swallow. At least it's no longer 3-year contracts. That was too long. We Canucks don't have the instalment plan, nor do we have reasonable contract pricing for the latest iPhones.

That is true, and no one is denying that there wasn't significant growth between the 5S launch and the 6 launch. That would be expected as the demand for the new screen sizes pas pent up for several years. That being said, my comment was on the lack of growth between the 6 and the 6S launch. If China was removed from the 6S numbers, we would see flat or even negative growth.

Right but is there a limit to how much Apple can realistically ship in 3 days? Could the number have been 15M if Apple was able to deliver that many? The Apple Store tracking website below shows that no phones are available to ship before 10/5 in major launch countries. That leads me to believe Apple is selling them as fast as they can make them and the 13M is more an indicator of supply (capacity) than demand.

http://iphone-inventory.blogspot.com/2015/09/iphone-6s-pre-order-tracker.html
The number could've been 15 million, but that would have had serious implications:
- Apple would have to buy additional production capacity. This will cost a whole lot of money since the capacity is only required to cover the peak demand. This production capacity will be useless in two months. Production halls full of expensive machinery will come to a halt.
- Produce stock in advance. This also will cost a lot of money. Inventory is expensive, especially when you're talking about millions of iPhones.

So 13 million is probably the number the smart guys at Apple calculated to be the most economically viable sales number for the opening weekend. Anything lower = money left on the table, anything higher = also money left on the table.

Live photos and 3d touch are gimmicks and I've tried them. Live photos takes twice as much room due to it saving the picture and a MOV video file of 5 seconds before and 5 seconds after the photo. 3d touch is Apple's branding of a shortcut key via the screen, despite people being told for years not to press on the screens of their phones due to possible damage. If you need a shortcut for a phone, you need to see a psychologist.
You can disable Live Photos, so no extra space will be required. 3D Touch is far more than a short cut key - it will be as significant to touch screens as the mouse was to desktops. It's not getting the attention it deserves, but that will change once people start using it - the only downside I see is it will make it frustrating to use other touch screen devices that don't have the capability, and will take a while to be fully incorporated into all the apps.

Only an increase of 3 million, given china and double the preordering time as last year, is disappointing. It's clear that demand has fallen. A redesigned iphone 7 could spike that up again but Apple definitely has work to do.

My reasoning is that people are becoming so damn lazy on a phone they now want shortcuts so they don't have to open an App. It's ludicrous.

Damn straight. I hear ya, bro! It all went downhill when Apple got rid of the command line interface on the first Mac. Yeah, life has sucked ever since making millions lazy and unproductive.

You are not being forced to use those shortcuts. Why do you care how others like to do things on their phones?

I guess Apple (and other companies) should not come up with new ways to do things.

Apple is setting itself up in a bad position with this high-expectation. it will have to break its own breaking-record numbers in the future or else.... and we all know nothing will go up forever, nature law of gravity.

My thought as well. Plus, I think the adding of larger screens played a big role in grabbing the Android audience, the extremely fast upgrade cycle for smartphones, and the $0 down installment yearly upgrade plans(Which increases the upgrade cycle in faster than before) is the reason for Apple's continuing record sales.

However, I don't want to see Apple stock on that eventual day when it is announced that YOY iPhone sales are lower.

The high expectation is not driven by Apple.

As they stated it went beyond their expectation.

I am also wondering how much further this can go.

By now almost everybody in the world must have a smart phone, plus
where do the handme downs go? (Yes, but how much family can you have? Even the kids want the latest)

When we see the first pygmies with an iPhone instead of bow and arrow we know the end is near.

None of us need to be on this forum. What are we doing, Mate?

This will be interesting as well, since Apple times the iPhone launch across 2 financial quarters (with the launch weekend in Apple's Fiscal Q4 and the remaining launch surge in Apple's Fiscal Q1). It only makes sense for Apple to limit supply for the launch weekend so that it can meet the Q4 (and annual) financial goals and let the rest of the iPhone sales drive the following quarter/fiscal year.

You said "3D touch is already saving me time as I can 'peek' at links embedded in emails without having to actually click-following the link and then go back to email." Is is that much of a mental challenge to open and app and close it - really?

Are you really this dense? This is not something to make the OS simpler... It's a time saver a productivity booster. It simply makes using the phone more efficient than it was previously. If you don't like it, don't use it.

It is also just really cool. That is why iPhones sell so well, they do cool things. This guy should stick with a BlackBerry.
