Issue:
Many users have found out that their iPhone 6S, 6S+ (some 6) turns off by itself, even when left unattended. It is fixed by forcing a restart of holding the home and power button for 10 seconds. Had this issue? Read below.

Survey:
Please answer these questions. If you are a beta tester, submit it to Apple's bug report as well. The more they see, the higher priority it gets.

1. Model, OS, and actions before the problem occurred. 6s, iOS 9.1 Public Beta , phone was idle with 100 charge
2. Was the device started as
new, or restored from a backup? restored from backup
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud? iCloud
4. Has the device
logged any kernel panics? Yes
5. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down? No

Gathering all the data is a tedious process. Please post only if you have the relevant issue to make things more efficient. I've forwarded this document to Apple's engineering team.

Kernel Panics:

This JUST happened to me tonight. Received & activated on Tues 9/29/15. Bought from Verizon if there is a pattern there. Thanks for the article, the fix worked.
Oh home button was hot when I noticed it but I had plugged it in by then hoping that would help.

3. Restored through iTunes (encrypted backup).

5. No, no heat issues at all.

Since I started using my phone on 9/26, this issue has occurred about once a day, on average. Every time, my phone has been idle, such as while in my pocket or connected to the charger. This occurred 4-5 times while I was running iOS 9.0.1 and once on 9.0.2.

I'm really hoping this is a software issue and that a cause will be identified and fixed shortly. I've also been checking for and updating my apps every evening, in case that is where the issue lies.

UPDATE (10/3): I haven't experienced this problem since the evening of Thursday, 10/1. According to the App Store, I had updated Chase, Twitter, and Starbucks apps that evening; and Instagram, Snapchat, Skype, and OneDrive the next day (Friday). Of note, the last time I installed a new app was on the night of 9/30 (prior to that, I installed at least one new app every night since I got my phone). My last experience with my iPhone/iOS shutting itself off/crashing was on the morning of 10/1 (almost 3 days ago--a vast improvement from the daily experiences prior to 10/1), after being plugged into the charger overnight. Just thought I would add more information for consideration.

UPDATE (10/4): This morning, I decided to remove some apps (i.e., Apple's productivity apps such as Numbers and Keynote and iMovie) and installed Flickr, then uninstalled it because I changed my mind. About 4-5 hours later, I experienced this issue. So after almost 4 days of not installing/uninstalling apps and NOT experiencing this issue, I messed around with some apps today and the problem reared its ugly head again.

This experience makes me think it might be software related. Notably, not once did I encounter a hot, or even warm, Home button when this happened on my phone. It's possible there are two different issues resulting in the same outcome.

1). iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 9.1 beta 2 & updated to beta 3 with recurring issue. 1st time it happened (beta 2) iPhone was plugged into charger and I woke up and iPhone was off. Thought it had not been plugged in, but upon further inspection and pressing home button and power button at same time it came back on with 100% charge. Home button was extremely hot to touch. 2nd time it happened I went to check my phone in my purse and it had shut off on (beta 3) when I turned it back on with the home button and power button being pressed there was 29% battery left. Home button was not hot this time.

2) restored from a backup

3) restored from iCloud backup

4) not sure what a kernel panic is so unable to answer

5) I have not noticed any heat warning, but I was asleep the night it was charging and woke to the hot home button.

i had no apps running in the background. actually closed all my apps and a few minutes later noticed iphone spontaneously turned off when on lock screen.

I am OCD about leaving apps open. I constantly close mine. So when my 2 instances happened no apps were opened.

Check Settings → General → Background App Refresh to see what you're really allowing to run in the background. Double-clicking your home button and swiping up on apps that are allowed to refresh can cause instability. Swiping up is nothing more than force quit. And Apple calls it "app switcher" implying recently used apps. Apple doesn't call it "open apps".

I don't have background app refresh on. I have always had that turned off to save my battery life and keep apps off running in background.

Woke up this morning to find my iPhone 6s off, I thought I hadn't plugged the charger in properly. Pressed power and nothing held power in for 15 seconds, nothing. Only when I pressed power and home together did it come to life.

Not impressed that the phone decided to power itself off, battery was 100%.

I have to admit when this was first reported, I thought I was lucky since I hadn't experienced it to date. Looks like mine is affected as well.

I wake up this morning and saw my phone turned off by itself. It was put on the charger over the night. The only way to get it on - by both buttons pushing.
  1. iPhone 6S plus. 64gb gold. 9.1 dp3, idle , during the night charging.
  2. Installed and set as New (no restoration)
  3. No restore.
  4. Yes. Some errors with the time and synchronization. If you want , I can upload the log file.
  5. Not mention. It was in "sleep" mode

My apologies if this has been covered. but if rather than two finger resetting the device straight off you connect to iTunes does the device show on the computer/in iTunes?

If so and you have Xcode running can you see the active processes activity monitor?

iPhone 6s 64G space gray
iOS 9.1 PB3
Happened overnight. Wound up over sleeping cause my alarm didn't ring.
luckily I'm retired and just go to school right now, but as other military people know this could be a disaster not to mention everyone else in the world that depends on getting to work on time. or picking up their kid on time. or anything else super serious that could rely on the use of an alarm.

knowing all of us on here and Apple power, this will end up helping their watch sales because they don't turn off automatically and can now be used as an alarm lol i kid....i already have one of course.

Happened to me.... iPhone 6s 128GB iOS 9.0.1 now on 9.0.2 Noticed my Watch had disconnected. Had to reset using home and power button. My son also reported his iPhone 6 32GB doing the same thing last week. I doubt its a 6s thing, most likely a iOS 9.? thing. Apple will fix it and no doubt will already know about the issues via device bug reporting.

Happened again this morning  now it's not funny especially as I missed an alarm call.....

Come on Apple - is it hardware or software, you to fix this ASAP, you're not being faif :(

It hasn't happened to me yet with my 6S plus but did with my 6 plus. It used to happen about once a week. I wasn't bothered enough to exchange it as it didn't really inconvenience me. Anyhow as so many people have been effected Apple will release a fix soon.

It happened to me last night; iPhone 6S - 64 GB, Silver, AT&T, iOS 9.0.2, iCloud Backup.

Mine happened after the phone was in airplane mode for about an hour, then i turned it off and set the phone down. Reading through some of the comments I see airplane mode being mentioned more than once. Anyone think that could be 'part' of the problem?

Mine's done it now three times in two days after never doing it since I got it launch day. Only thing 'new' is B3 but that doesn't seem to be a direct cause based on other reports. Very strange. The last time was with about one minute idle. Locked the screen, put in my pocket, walked upstairs. Dead! Eek!

ETA: as before, no heat issues.
