*knock on wood* no so far with my 6s+.... I had this issue all the time with my 5... just out of the blue it would shut off and I couldn't get it turn back on... finally a reset would work on it!

HATED that it happened!

1. Model, OS, and actions before the problem occurred.
6s 64GB, 9.0.1, after sending a text message
2. Was the device started as
new, or restored from a backup?
restored from backup
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud?
icloud
4. Has the device
logged any kernel panics?
yes, asthma health by mount sinai, which hadn't been open on the new device, but does use touch id.
5. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down?

no, but the device didn't shut down, was just unresponsive with a very hot home id button. Had to force a restart.

I have experienced this on my iPhone 6s Plus running iOS 9.1 Beta 3. Can confirm that it is tied to iOS 9 at minimum.

iPhone 6s 64GB 9.1b2
Set up as new, then enrolled in beta, updated to 9.1b2, and finally restored from iTunes backup
No kernel panics logged
No heat or warnings

I may have had this happen on Sunday at a friend's house. I was borrowing his slightly frayed third party lightning cable to charge my phone. I blamed it on the cable but now I'm not so sure…

No recurrence since and now on 9.1b3

1. 6S 64GB. IOS 9.0.1. Started happening Friday night (Sept. 25) after I bought it. (Initially thought it was a fluke.) Couldn't wake up from "sleep", and had to hold in power and home buttons to reset it. Happened at least daily after that, until I got it replaced by Apple on Tuesday. The battery was never less than about 45%. My previous iPhone 6 running 9.0.1 didn't have any issues at all.
2. Was the device started as new, or restored from a backup? Restored.
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud? iCloud.
4. Has the device
logged any kernel panics? None. Apple's diagnostics showed no issues with it or installed apps.
5. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down? No.

I didn't notice it feeling warm as some have reported. It also didn't fail while in-use, it just couldn't be turned on after sitting idle in my pocket or on a table for awhile. At no time was it placed anywhere that could cause a thermal issue, like in direct sunlight or in a hot car.

Apple was very quick to replace it when I brought it in to the Genius Bar on Tuesday- almost no questions asked. They said they were't aware of any widespread problems at the time, but I was a little suspicious that they didn't do their usual full reset/reload and "come back again if it is still a problem" routine. The replacement 6S they gave me has not had any issues at all, despite being restored from iCloud using the exact same backup as the original. It has not yet been upgraded to 9.0.2, so it is not exhibiting the problem in iOS 9.0.1.

This just happened to my iPhone when I was texting someone but instead it faded to grey bars then shut off. It came back up after a few seconds but still very strange.

It happened once yesterday. I had left my phone on the table for a couple of hours as I taking some rest on a holiday. Picked up the phone and the screen was blank. Pressed the home button and power button with no response. Had to press the power button and home button to restart.

I have the iPhone 6s Plus 128gb space grey. It was running iOS 9.01 at the time but last night I updated to iOS 9.02. Not faced the problem again yet.

Hope it is a software issue which can be fixed.

I'm sure it's more than likely a software issue. Thankfully I haven't encountered it personally but I'm hoping Apple determines the cause quickly and issues a patch for those affected. I do dislike the fact that the phones could potentially have one of two different processors. Hopefully there is no actual difference between the two.
They are not two different processors. They are the same processors made by two different foundry.

Missed an alarm this morning

1. Space-Gray iPhone 6S Plus 64GB iOS 9.0.2 (T-Mobile) - Plugged in next to my bed
2. Restored from Backup
3. iTunes encrypted backup
4. Yes
5. No

Update #1: iOS 9.0.2 is released.
Update #2: Issue confirmed in isolated cases at Apple forums
Update #3: New survey questions (thanks notgreg)

Issue:
Many users have found out that their iPhone 6S, 6S+ (some 6) turns off by itself, even when left unattended. It is fixed by forcing a restart of holding the home and power button for 10 seconds. Had this issue? Read below.

Survey:
Please answer these questions. If you are a beta tester, submit it to Apple's bug report as well. The more they see, the higher priority it gets.

1. Model, OS, and actions before the problem occurred.
2. Was the device started as
new, or restored from a backup?
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud?
4. Has the device
logged any kernel panics?
5. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down?

Gathering all the data is a tedious process. Please post only if you have the relevant issue to make things more efficient. I've forwarded this document to Apple's engineering team.

Kernel Panics:
Settings>Privacy>Diagnostics & Usage>Diagnostics & Usage Data.
-There is no need to scroll through the list, as the only important logs will be at the top and they will start with a long string of numbers. (example here)

Sample Diagnostics:
1. iPhone 6S 64 GB Gold, iOS 9.01, idle state
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iCloud
4. None
5. None

I also had this issue on my iPhone 6s Plus 64GB Space Grey.

1. iPhone 6S Plus 64GB iOS 9.0.2
2. Restored.
3. iCloud.
4. Quite a few; JetsamEvent & CoreTime errors
5. No.

How I resolved the issue;
  • Do a full DFU Restore to latest iOS 9.0.2 (https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/DFU_Mode)
  • I then connected to WiFi and plugged in because I wanted to restore via iCloud.
  • I let the restore finish and rebooted device
  • I then reset all settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
  • Issue has not occurred since!
I know this won't be the case for everyone but it worked for me and solved several problems (white background on 3D touch invocation as well)

Cheers,

Blake

All you had to do was hold sleep and home button for a few seconds to reboot

To make it it start again

1. iPhone 6S 64 GB Silver, iOS 9.1b1, idle state (was working two minutes previously; tried to wake -- no go)
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iTunes
4. None

Add me to the list, iPhone 6S Plus, 9.1beta3, I did an icloud restore from an iphone 6 plus on 9.1beta originally. This has happened multiple times over the last week. This morning was black screening on the charger, had to hard reset to get it to turn on (as with every time this has happened in the past). I guess the question is if it's some faulty hardware that requires a replacement (ie some phones are good, others arent) or if its software (ios 9) or an app that all of us seem to have that is causing this (like facebook or whatsapp or something). Not sure but if anyone has swapped their phone out and the problem has went away yet you're using the same apps etc I'd love to hear about that.

I am not saying to temporarily resolve the hang...I am talking about I do NOT have the issue anymore...like at all

They are not two different processors. They are the same processors made by two different foundry.

Same architecture and design but manufactured by two different companies and even slightly different size. There may be zero difference between them other than what I just mentioned or there may be other differences we don't know of. It's not quite like two different companies using the same rubber stamp.

So...this exact thing happened to my work iPhone 5S that's still running iOS 8. Are we all sure this is a new iPhone thing?

I woke up to a dead iPhone. Plugged it into the charger assuming the battery was dead. Checked my phone after lunch and it would not boot. I did the hard reset by holding down the home and lock button. Restarted. The charge was at 32%, indicating the phone wasn't charging the entire morning.

1. iPhone 5S, 16gb, iOS 8.3
2. I dont remember the last time I backed it up
3. Not signed up for iCloud
4. Yes, but i have no idea what is what in the logs. There are logs from 10/1, when I assume the crash happened.
5. None

1. 6s 16GB, IOS 9.1 public beta 1, iPhone was just sitting idle before problem occurred. Before then, normal usage such as checking email, Safari, etc.
VERY IMPORTANT - Home/Touch ID button was extremely hot when I tried to wake the device from its dead state. At first I thought I was imagining it, but then touched the home button again using a different finger. The home button was so hot that it was burning my finger. Nothing else on the iPhone felt hot, or warm, except the home button.

2. Device restored from backup

3. iTunes restore

4. Did not check for any kernel panics as I returned the 16GB 6s to T Mobile the next day and exchanged for 64GB 6s.

5. No heat warning displayed prior to shut down. Device seemed to shut down for no reason. I also tried plugging device into the charger and then my MacBook Pro to revive it, but to no avail. Only a hard reset worked to revive it.

I swear I've had it with these "gates" - this is unacceptable. If I messed up this much at work time and time again I'd be fired. I do have the 6s+ and I am running 9.0.2 and this has not happened to me yet but I've been through all the gates and I'm sick of it....if my phone shuts off by it's self then I'm getting the galaxy edge plus - period.

Sorry, I just had to vent

Wow. Talk about going backwards.

I'm running 91.b2, just upgraded this morning to b3.

I'm wondering though: Question.. are others putting the phone FACE DOWN? When I go to bed, I put the phone into airplane mode and turn on the wifi. Then, I put the phone face down. I'm wondering if with the new 'face down' sensor, could something be going on in the phone that the sensor is confusing? Or is the sensor in the touchid button?

Since this feature is using the motion detector M9 in this case, could it be that this sensor is being activated and is staying ON in this orientation and either increasing temp to the point that the phone overheats or gets overwhelmed and won't allow the screen to come on? the phone is essentially on but the screen isn't lighting up?

No. iPhone 6s 16GB T Mobile IOS 9.1 PB 1, was face up when it shut down by itself and the home/Touch ID button became extremely hot. Good possible theory, but isn't substantiated in my particular case.
