It just happened to me for the first time on my ... iPod touch 6th gen. 128GB iOS 9.0.2.
I had listen on some music offline, than stopped it. When I looked for some messages half an hour later, it's screen stayed black. I thought the battery drained for some reason, begun to charge it, but it didn't started up as it usually does, the screen kept black. Then I reset it (I've seen this post only later) and it was fine, with a nearly full charge (so that's was not the problem). I'm running it since two weeks and that has been my first issue.

This just happened to me for the first time

1. iPhone 6S 64 GB rose gold, iOS 9.0.2, idle state
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iTunes
4. None
5. None

Same architecture and design but manufactured by two different companies and even slightly different size. There may be zero difference between them other than what I just mentioned or there may be other differences we don't know of. It's not quite like two different companies using the same rubber stamp.
the A9 is designed by Apple. Not TSMC nor Samsung. They are just foundry, and they are just using a slightly different process. But we are still speaking about the same chip (actually it's a SoC)

1. iPhone 6S, 128GB space gray, iOS 9.0.1, idle state (screen off, sitting on my desk)
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iTunes
4. No
5. No

Happened only once. Had to hold power and home button to get it to reset.

I have the iphone 5(planning on getting the new 6s now).Since the last software update (9.0.2) my phone shuts off randomly!! The screen went blank in the past 2/3 days when the battery was 25-30%. But today it shut off when it was 75%!! Upon pressing the home and power button the screen displays the low battery image & insert cable image. But when i started charging the battery goes up immediately to 74%!!
Either the battery percentage display is faulty or the new update is causing a problem.

1. iPhone 6s, 64Gb, Space Grey
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored via iTunes
4. No kernel panic
5. No heat warning, didn't seem warm either
6. Extra note: paired with Apple Watch
7. Updated to iOS 9.0.2 last night. Crash happened this afternoon. Had also crashed under iOS 9.0.1

It sounds like your problem probably is not related to this, I think the battery is just not good anymore

I just experienced this issue last night! I kinda freaked out and was worried lol, but I remember reading about this bug that's going around! so I simply just just pressed the power button and the home button for several seconds and it was able to turn back on! ..I was on 9.0.2...but after the issue I signed up to try out the 9.1 beta 3... no issues so far! wish me luck.

Iphone 6s 128gb - AT&T
iOS 9.1 Beta 2
Restored from Backup
No Kernel Panics
No heat warnings

I did also notice the "hot button" while trying to get the phone to revive while plugging it into a wall charger.

The only resolution has been to restart the phone using both buttons for 10s.

Update #1: iOS 9.0.2 is released.
Update #2: Issue confirmed in isolated cases at Apple forums
Update #3: New survey questions (thanks notgreg)

Issue:
Many users have found out that their iPhone 6S, 6S+ (some 6) turns off by itself, even when left unattended. It is fixed by forcing a restart of holding the home and power button for 10 seconds. Had this issue? Read below.

Survey:
Please answer these questions. If you are a beta tester, submit it to Apple's bug report as well. The more they see, the higher priority it gets.

1. Model, OS, and actions before the problem occurred.
2. Was the device started as
new, or restored from a backup?
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud?
4. Has the device
logged any kernel panics?
5. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down?

Gathering all the data is a tedious process. Please post only if you have the relevant issue to make things more efficient. I've forwarded this document to Apple's engineering team.

Kernel Panics:
Settings>Privacy>Diagnostics & Usage>Diagnostics & Usage Data.
-There is no need to scroll through the list, as the only important logs will be at the top and they will start with a long string of numbers. (example here)

Sample Diagnostics:

2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iCloud

WOW - everyone is very quick to blame iOS, has anyone started looking at a specific app or apps, a developer may not have updated their apps to iOS 9 and could be causing memory leaks etc, is anyone capturing what apps people have that maybe running in the background, I have a 6s Plus 128gb and have no issues

i had no apps running in the background. actually closed all my apps and a few minutes later noticed iphone spontaneously turned off when on lock screen.

I just had same issue, and its not shutting down, just the display goes off, and i had to do the hard reset

iphone 6 Plus 64GB

I noticed this problem when I was setting up my iPhone 6S+. I set up the device as a new iPhone but hadn't really used the device as was still using previous phone. I noticed the device was reset as if I I hadn't completed the setup. I then installed from backup and only seen this once since.

I had the issue where the phone was randomly turning off and home button was heating up. Returned to Apple and I was the 3rd return that morning. Just to note, I set my phone up as a new phone which I do with every new model. Apple has an issue here. It was an AT&T iPhone 6S 128. I am now enjoying my old iPhone 6 and the extra money in my pocket.

Happened to me while charging over night. Missed my alarm, too. Had to hard reset to get it to come back on. 6S 64GB 9.1 b2

I had the same experience. charging overnight, woke up to dead phone, came on after hold the homebutton and power button at same time for like 10 secs. Hopefully this is fixed soon 6s+, 64gb, 9.1 beta 2. Tmobile

Great. Just happened to my 6S 64GB. Good I read about it here because simply holding just power button didn't work. But as far as I can tell home button didn't get hot. I used my phone before I started shaving. It took me about 5 minutes to shave after which I checked phone and it was dead.

I think my phone restarted four or five times now, but only one time it just turned off and didn't start back up. Pressing Home+Power fixed it, but I can't remember if the Homebutton felt warm, I think it didn't.
