Same problem here:

iPhone 6s 128 gb spacegrey
Restored via Backup + iTunes
(Apple Watch)

Turned off // hot home button // black screen
Happened 3 & 4 days ago (everything that was described)
But only 2 times.

Question: how many are using the AppleWatch, having this problem?

Has happened on two 64gb 6s and one 5s. My wife's 64gb 6 so far has been w/o issue. This may be related to OS, application and/or a combination thereof and not hardware. My wife does not use/run many apps, my kids and I do? XcodeGhost rearing its ugly head?

1. Iphone 6s 64gb SG iOS 9.0.2 idles state
2. Set up as new at store on 10/1 restored from backup after getting home.
3. Itunes
4. No
5. No

This issue just happened to me (iPhone 6S 128GB) again last night, this is with the latest iOS 9.1 Beta 3 Developer Beta. Same issue occurred once with Beta 2 as well. Since I rely on my phone as an alarm clock this is a bit of a problem when you can't wake up for work. Yes this is a beta but same issue is occurring on non-beta versions as well. It seems to me most likely this is an iOS bug that is in the works and I would hope/expect Apple to release a significant update sometime next week that hopefully will address this. I don't believe this is a hardware issue at all. I have experienced this in the past with other phones as well.

2. Restored

Hope this helps, and thanks!

It now occured again on my iPhone 4S, 16GB, iOS 9.0.2.

I left my phone idle for some time (30 mins?) while it had 60% battery left. When I tried to wake it out of standby with the power or home button the screen stayed black so it appeared the phone was shut down. Flipping the silent/vibrate switch did nothing. Had to restart the phone by holding the power + home button.

1. iPhone 4S 16GB, iOS 9.0.2, idle state (standby)
2. Restored (updated via wi-fi from 8.4.1 to 9.0 etc.)
3. Restored through iCloud
4. I don't know how to find or scan the CrashReport Logs folder, I do see plenty of .crash report files for my iPhone that have been created today after syncing. Partial screenshot of the Logs folder
5. No, not to knowledge since phone was idle and unattended to most of time.

Edit: added description of how I used my phone before the 'turning off' thing occured.

Update #1: iOS 9.0.2 is released.
Update #2: Issue confirmed in isolated cases at Apple forums
Update #3: New survey questions (thanks notgreg)
View the latest data here.

Issue:
Many users have found out that their iPhone 6S, 6S+ (some 6) turns off by itself, even when left unattended. It is fixed by forcing a restart of holding the home and power button for 10 seconds. Had this issue? Read below.

Survey:
Please answer these questions. If you are a beta tester, submit it to Apple's bug report as well. The more they see, the higher priority it gets.

1. Model, OS, and actions before the problem occurred.
2. Was the device started as
new, or restored from a backup?
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud?
4. Has the device
logged any kernel panics?
5. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down?

Gathering all the data is a tedious process. Please post only if you have the relevant issue to make things more efficient. I've forwarded this document to Apple's engineering team.

Kernel Panics:
Settings>Privacy>Diagnostics & Usage>Diagnostics & Usage Data.
-There is no need to scroll through the list, as the only important logs will be at the top and they will start with a long string of numbers. (example here)

Sample Diagnostics:
1. iPhone 6S 64 GB Gold, iOS 9.01, idle state
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iCloud
4. None
5. None

BTW, are you a developer?

I have Apple Watch. What is your issue with it?

I wonder is some common app people are using is leaving something in memory that's causing this?

I have the same shutting down issue it was plugged into apple charger overnight would not turn on but held down home and power button and it started up I though it was bricked. I called Apple they did diagnostics and said it was fine, they both seemed like they were stupid!
iPhone 6s 64 Gb running 9.0.2

My 6S+ just did this now for the first time after sitting unattended for 30 mins. I was wondering what was going on, because I knew the battery was at 79% when I had put it down- and still was when I did the force reset to get it running again.
Here are my details:

1. iPhone 6S+ 128 GB Space Gray, iOS 9.0.2, idle state
2. New
3. N/A – new
4. No
5. No

I've had this happen twice now. After resetting it, I noticed that Facebook had used 36% of the battery in the past 24 hours while running in the background (way above what I normally see) and the battery itself had dropped from about 85% to 48%
