Release day Samsung A9 64 GB 6S here. Just did it for the first time. I received an email, heard the notification, picked up my phone, and dead locked up. Had to hold power and home.

Before anyone asks if it's related to the TSMC chip or blah blah, mine is a TSMC, and people are reporting the same issue with the Samsung. I'm sure Apple will release a fix. It's just a matter of when.

Edward Snowden claims British spies are tapping into our telephones and can even switch them on and off remotely as a way of keeping track of our every move.

In a rare interview given to the BBC, the former CIA employee said GCHQ spooks use a secret programme codenamed 'Smurfs' to 'own your phone' from the comfort of their desks.

The fugitive - who was responsible for the biggest leak of top secret intelligence files the world has ever seen - also said agencies 'hack' network service providers to 'secretly take ownership' of devices.

But despite releasing even more alleged secrets about the spies' work, the whistleblower insisted he was not a traitor - and said that he will die 'happy' after what he has done.

This is not a GCHQ switching-off fest that happened to start with the iOS 9 launch. I also have it on good authority that the device has to be physically accessed by GCHQ at some point (in posting for example) or on jailbroken devices.

While I'm not exactly pleased with GCHQ reading all my emails nor do I think they should be able to without a court order (in fact they can't legally), if they really want to waste their time they can go ahead. I'm clean, I have nothing to fear.

I am fairly confident this is an iOS 9 issue, it has been seen on multiple generations of device.

In the early days they needed physical access i think but from what i've read they can now do everything remotely , but yea this is probably unrelated i doubt they are sitting there randomly turning our phones off all day lol

The title of this thread is a little misleading at this point.

We known it seems to be affecting more than just the new 6s. It seems to be going back as far as the 5s on iOS 9? Are iPads falling to this issue as well?

And I don't think the phones are shutting off, I think it's more of certain parts of the os are failing/crashing. Because the phones are still on to log the reset/restart resetcounter.ips and Apple Watch users have reported that their watch does not show the iPhone disconnect icon.

I have an iPad Air 2 on iOS 9.0.2 and my iPhone 6s Plus is on iOS 9.1 Beta 4 now (just updated to beta 4 20 minutes ago.) This has happened twice with my phone now and not once with my iPad.

Stopped by at Apple Store yesterday evening while at shopping mall. Two of 6S' were turned off... They wouldn't turn back on if I pressed lock button. However, pressing and holding home button + lock button for several seconds turned them back on

What did they say about it at the apple store?

I did not talk to any Apple Store employees. My friends and I just walked in to check out the new iPhones, and I just happened to have spotted two 6S' that were turned off. It could have been interesting to ask an employee why these phones were off...

Would've definitely been interesting to see if they fiddle with the buttons or know to reset right away.

I was about to drive to an Apple Store this evening to buy a 6s, but this issue has temporarily put the brakes on for me.

It isn't just the 6s that is having the issue, the issue is tied in with iOS 9, so if you have updated to iOS 9 on your current device you are susceptible to it on that phone. I wouldn't let this issue keep you from getting a new phone that you want. I am sure there will be a software update that addresses the issue.

It is supposed to turn on when plugged in no matter what I believe

I may be wrong but if your battery dies I dont think a iphone will turn back on untill theirs charge in the battery so if this is the case it would take sometime for it to turn back on.

fixed.

1. iPhone 6S Plus 64 GB Space Grey, iOS 9.1 public beta, idle state
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iTunes
4. None
5. None

Warm TouchID button as well.

With the title of the thread changed, I'll report that my 4S with 9.0.2 has not had this issue with the display turning off.

EDIT: On reading this entire thread, it appears that some people claim no crash logs are generated, thereby casting doubt on whether SpringBoard is the culprit or some other process. It could be that the Apple Discussions user mentioned below was experiencing a different crash.

---
Respectfully, the reports being collected on this thread are probably not of much use to Apple.

This appears to be a crash in SpringBoard (the app that powers the lock screen and home screen) (Update: maybe not? See edit above.) It doesn't appear to be related to whether you set up your phone as new or via a backup.

It's not that the display is turning off, but if SpringBoard crashes and doesn't relaunch itself, you have no working lock screen or home screen, which is why certain functions of the phone still work, but there is no UI. I'm guessing this crash leaves the fingerprint sensor in a confused state, it might be continuously activated, which is why it will get very hot after a while.

What would be more helpful to Apple to isolate this crash is any diagnostics logs you can grab off your phone, such as this one by a user on the Apple discussions site:

{"app_name":"SpringBoard","timestamp":"2015-10-03 18:07:22.22 -0700","app_version":"1.0","slice_uuid":"2a6bd074-7054-39ec-a5b7-d016fe13c2c3", "adam_id":0,"build_version":"50","bundleID":"com.apple.springboard","share_with_ app_devs":false,"is_first_party":true,"bug_type":"109","os_version":"iPhone OS 9.0.2 (13A452)","name":"SpringBoard"}

Interesting springboard idea...

Just happened to me for the fifth time. This was the first time I've had the 'hot button' issue, and I was just holding it in my hand, and I looked down and it was dead. I even tried to shut it down normally (power down/slide) with no luck (makes sense if springboard is dead, but also I could have been missing the invisible slider!).

Also, as some have mentioned, I also have been getting the 'touch ID needs your passcode' message a couple of times which is indicative of something. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the reboot language in it, so the phone hadn't rebooted without my seeing it.... If it happens again, I'll note the exact language.

I'm downloading 9.1PB4 as I type. Hope there's something in it for this, but unlikely, as the 'answer' from Apple is to restore as new, and, forget that, as I've said earlier :)

Im not sure why anyone would put beta software on a device they use everyday anyways.
You should neaver do that because beta siftware is meet to be put on a backup device that is used only for testing. Not a device thats used all the time.

Seriously? It's called public beta for a reason. I'm sure there are many hundreds (thousands?) of people here doing exactly what I'm doing. And I never even implied that any issues were FROM the beta. :)
