I've experienced the same issue with abrupt shut off. Typically this occurs over night, and my alarm does not sound. On one occasion in the past, the home button was very warm. However, this has not happened since. My phone model specs: iphone 6s, 128gb, 9.0.2, Verizon. Please help get this fixed.

Maybe update your phone?

Exactly same issues, except it happens during the day as well, like today, right after I put it in my pocket. Appeared a few weeks ago. Iphone 6s plus, 128gb, T-mobile with iOS 9.3.1

After basically trying every software option and reinstalling iOS clean I think I managed to fix my iPhone 6+. Like someone had suggested earlier, I took the case off the iPhone and applied slight pressure with my thumbs to the back, middle of the phone while supporting the front of the phone with my fingers. I haven't had a lockup in 3 months. It could be just a coincidence, but after doing this I haven't had to hard reboot the phone. If you've tried everything else like I have, it's worth a shot.

For me on iPhone 6S (and also on older 4S) it's:
  1. Happens when using the camera or an app that uses the camera (instagram, HDR Pro etc). But randomly and with no discernible pattern and not always
  2. Phone shuts down
  3. Re-start it - shows no charge left and needs to be plugged in to effect a re-start
  4. Plug it in - it restarts - loads of charge left
Have tried:
  • Reset all settings
  • Wipe and set up as a brand new phone
No joy with either of the above.

Took phone Genius Bar today. Was told it is an operating system problem, Apple know about it, needs a software update but no idea when that will be. Guy said they get people in every day with the same problem. No point replacing the phone with a new one as that won't fix the problem.

I'm not too happy - I'm self-employed and rely on the phone for clients to contact me and vice versa. I don't carry a charger with me all the time to plug the phone in so it will restart. And even if I did I'm sometimes in locations where there is nowhere to plug it in anyway. It's getting to be so bad I am, for the first time ever, thinking of jumping to android. I use the camera every day and don't want to stop taking photographs, but the fear of a random shut-down is spoiling my enjoyment of iPhone photography :(

It's an old issue as I had it on my 4S for many months before buying the 6S last November. I put it down to the age of the 4S (bought on release) so was disappointed when the 6S exhibited the same behaviour.

I started to experience this with my iP6s only a week ago after having had it since launch day. Funnily enough I started to also experience it on my iP4s a couple of months back but put it done to old age. Anyway, I took in the iP6s for a Genius assessment. One of the first questions I was asked was whether I was in the habit of always force closing apps, which is exactly what I've been doing since the iP4. Genius stated that this COULD be the reason as iOS 9 introduced new software in relation to RAM management and why I am only experiencing this now when force closing apps. He did clarify though that it could be one of many reasons. Was provided with a new phone and am not force closing apps, will see what eventuates...

For those experiencing this, are you also in the habit of force closing apps?

I have had my iphone 6s plus since the week of release. It is on iOS 9.0.2, with a Jailbreak. I haven't had any problems till yesterday. I went to use my phone and it was dead/off and would not turn on with the power button, or being plugged into power, or plugged into my computer with itunes open. I thought the battery might have run down to 0% or my jailbreak was doing something bad.

Was looking for an Apple Store to make an appt- on vacation- and for the heck of it I did a hard restart- held both the power and home button- Also thought the home button was a little warm, but was not really sure of it till I read about the problem here. My phone booted up, and I had 63% battery left. It's been 24 hours and seems to be fine.

I have an ipad air 2 on iOS 9.3 and have never had any problems with it. I googled my problem of the iphone 6s plus shutting down and found so many reports on google! Very surprised it has not been made more public.

Thought I would add my info here.

Launch day iPhone 6S Plus on AT&T - Silver/128. Have had no issues until a couple weeks ago. The phone randomly shut off. Only way to get it back on is home/power buttons. Thought nothing of it as stuff happens. It happened twice more. Last one was last night and I noticed the home button was hot. Phone would not turn on or respond. Did a hard reset and away it went. Working fine and the home button was cool to the touch again. This is very strange. I find it odd it is starting out of the blue, randomly and at this point.

My phone had done this last two times I've put it on charger overnight and coincidently set my alarm...I now also recall dropping it recently but nothing externally damaged, no scratch or cracks. iPhone 6, 16g iOS 9.3.2. Only way was holding home button and power/sleep button for 10 secs. Any help appreciated.

My 6s does this about once every 2-3 month. It did it yesterday on 9.3.2. I just installed 9.3.3 beta 4. Probably by the time it does it again ill have the iPhone 7 lol. I'm not going to bother doing a restore, resetting settings or going to the apple store.

I experienced this very situation on my IPhone SE 16gb Space Gray IOS 9.3.2 phone twice yesterday. I purchased my phone sim free from the Apple Store 3 weeks ago and hadn't had any issues up until this point. My phone was on 100 % charge when I laid it down and when I picked it up it was unresponsive. I had to hold down the sleep/wake button + home button to turn on. After just spending $400 on this phone I find this frustrating. I restored my phone to " Set up as new" only to have it happen again. I have no apps, no photos, no music downloaded.

This happened on my 6S this morning. First time ever on this device, and about a handful of times across all devices dating back to the 3GS.

I am still dealing with this issue danny8200...I have read online about a few others using the 6S & SE that have experienced this exact problem. Did your phone turn back on by just pressing the on/off button or did you have to press the home button also. My phone is less then a month old and this just happened out of the blue. I have tried restoring my phone on 2 different computers, but the problem persist. Each time this happens to my phone it's when it idle...It has never shutdown when I'm using it. It always bricks after it goes to sleep or I stop using it. Please let me know what your solution is..I have a appointment on 7/11/2016 at Apple to try and resolve this.

Any update after iOS 10? I'm having the same issue and and I'm on the latest iOS version.

Got the same issue here. iPhone 6s 64gb space grey. It's been running out of battery very quickly, visibly drops from 25% to 10% in the space of 3 mins. It also just switches off randomly and when I reset the phone using home and power it comes back on after a few tries with over 25% battery. This is really annoying as it started around the date the iPhone 7 was released and is out of warranty. I may take it in and cite UK/EU law which gives 2 years of warranty on defective electronics if they say they can't help.

Same issue on the iPhone SE 64GB space grey. Started a few weeks ago, it turned off at night while charging. Happened again a few days later. Now it happens randomly, sometimes 10-20 times per day. It's always when the screen is off (on my desk or in my pocket), and never happens when I'm using it or if it's connected to a computer over USB. I've tried upgrading from 9.3.1 to 9.3.5 (haven't tried 10 yet), restoring from a backup, even setting up as a new phone. Removing some app will sometimes help temporarily, but it keeps happening. I've got an appointment at the Apple Store next week.

Edit: I first hit this issue the night after connecting to some Bluetooth devices for the first time. Since then I've had Bluetooth turned off, still happens. I see some other posts where users hit it after playing music (over Bluetooth?) or connected to Apple Watch. Could this be a common thread?

Issue:
Many users have found out that their iPhone 6S's and other iOS devices not waking up, even when left unattended. Although it appears that the device turned off due to the screen not displaying, it may actually be frozen.

How do I fix it?
It is fixed by forcing a restart of holding the home and power button for 10 seconds.

Is this problem a priority bug fix for Apple?
I was told by an Apple rep that this error isn't well documented. Based on our survey, this is probably because it is not identifiable in diagnostics. But we still need to look at them, because they provide substantial info about the device.

How can I help?
1. Send diagnostics to Apple
On your iOS device, go to Settings > Privacy > Diagnostics & Usage, and select Automatically Send
2. Call Apple Care and let them check.
3. Take the survey below. Be specific and show us your diagnostics logs.

*if you are a Beta user, submit your bug through the app.

What causes it?
I've been told by Apple support that at least one of (many?) possible causes is likely corrupted iCloud backups. If you've restored your device from any previous backup through iCloud, and that backup is corrupted, it could result in this problem. There has been some acknowledgment that iCloud still has bugs.

How should I fix the problem completely?
First, make sure you are running the latest iOS 9 point release. If you run beta, those are inherently unstable so your results may vary.

Method 1: (for those who setup a device as new OR restored from backup)

Reset all your settings and test for a couple days for stability before attempting anything else. (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings>

Method 2: (for those who restored from backup)
If #1 fails, make sure all your iCloud data is saved then setup as a new iPhone (here). You'll need to re-download all your apps manually so create a list first. Your iCloud data can be synced from your account, so that part is covered.

The key is to get a clean install and then create a backup from there. Then, create a backup on iTunes (not iCloud) and save that one. Test for a few days and if it's okay, you can create an iCloud backup again.

Please report your results after trying these. Especially if the problem is still not fixed.

Setting up your device as new means you are responsible for keeping your data. Please ask Apple support if you aren't comfortable.

Survey:
The survey is still open but the spreadsheet is paused for now.

1. Model, OS, and actions before the problem occurred.
2. Was the device started as
new, or restored from a backup?
3. Was it
restored through iTunes or restored through iCloud?
4. Has the device displayed a heat warning prior to shutting down?
5. Please post any crash logs from your device. (Settings>Privacy>Diagnostics & Usage>Diagnostics & Usage Data.)

Sample Diagnostics:
1. iPhone 6S 64 GB Gold, iOS 9.01, idle state
2. Restored from backup
3. Restored through iCloud
4. None
5. See below:

[doublepost=1477558858][/doublepost]I started experiencing this after my last update to v10. It will power off at 50%, 20% battery. Doing the home power off just caused the screen to show a dead battery with the thunder bolt flashing. After I plug in the thunderbolt cable it powers up and shows the 50% , or whatever it was before it died.

Guys, I’m not sure if the issue you are describing is related to the original problem discussed in this topic. Maybe over the course of 37 pages it went that way but please have a look at this:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-6s-turning-off-at-10-20.1954530/page-5

I also have this problem and am very interested to learn if anyone was able to solve it with anything but phone replacement.

My 6s qualifies for the battery exchange, but I don't think I've ever had the problem. Could it raise it's ugly head in the future?

This is now happening on my new iPhone 7. I have done clean installs and used my backups and the phone simply goes to a black screen over time but the haptic feedback works on the home button. I have sent the phone to Apple TWICE now (they have had it logner than I have) and they tell me nothing is wrong and send it back. I am really getting tired of the antics. I will give it one more go and if it happens again, Apple will be buying it back...

My 5s is flawless
