"Mr Cook, Mr Cook!"
"What is it, Jony?"
"We've just been looking through the list of things we can improve on with iOS9 and we realised someone had lent a broom against the white board we had all the ideas listed on, it was covering up the words "Dynamic Wallpapers".
"Gosh, I'd completely forgotten we'd introduced them!"

Is how I'd imagine this came about.

TIL that Apple HQ is like a crap 70s British Sitcom.

I think if developers could create animated backgrounds that would be major, studios could release unique background for new films (Star Wars, Transformers, Finding Dory ETC..) which would be really nice..

If OLED, what can some explain advantages? Thx.

OLED Benefits are better contrast ratio's and better power draw.

LCD screens, as used by Apple currently, work by passing a light through a layer of Liquid Crystals (hence LCD), which change from being opaque to translucent. When Opaque, they block light, and give that pixel the "off" or "black" colour. when Transluecent, they only let their specific colour through. Usually made up of 3 colours, which combined, can reproduce millions of colour variants.

The upside to this is it's a very old technology, that has been very refined over the years and is generally very cheap to produce.

Downside is its hard to have absolute blacks because there is almost always, (even on the best) a bit of light that will leak through from the backlight between the gaps in the pixels. Making it hard to have absolute blacks and affecting contrast ratios. Apple currently have one of the best (imho) LCD displays on the market.

OLED does not use a backlight and doesn't work by shining light through the colour layer. OLED works by actually having each coloured pixel (again, usually 3 sub-pixel in a pixel), able to light itself, so that each individual pixel can be turned on or off, or even have their own brightness. What this allows for is pixels that are supposed to be "black" to be completely off and produce no light. in this state, they also do not use any energy.

The upside to this is that contrast ratios can be better, and blacks will actually be blacks, allowing for that "inky" black look with no light bleed.

Downside is that it's still relatively new technology and can be quite expensive, with only few companies who are making them. (samsung is currently the leader). Also, its still developing, and historically, colour reproduction could be off, though some of the newer screens are being considered best in the business.

I hope it's not only an iPhone 6s feature.

yeah, really. what's all this talk about need oled just to have motion/animation? who is trying to say my iphone 5s must have a static lock screen? that's bull. they change way too little, lock the os, give us a minimalist home screen with little to no customization functionality, and then when they add anything new and cool, they do it in such a way that requires us to give them more money even though they already have more money than god and our present hardware is just %&*(@(* fine as it is? sorry, apple is really getting under my skin these days.

Better battery life and colour reproduction.

No one is forcing you to use their devices.

They never came back out with the panoramic wallpapers (scrolling backgrounds) that they had in iOS 7(?) beta but pulled by release time. Those were fun, no practical use, but fun.

I thought with some better processors (or Metal) they'd have tried that again.

Without Oled, this doesnt make any sense :/

All OLED displays still burn in eventually, regardless of what anyone says. Go to a cell phone store and take a look at the Android phones that have been on display for a few months. Bring up an all white screen and then tell me about how they don't burn in any more lol. Then compare two identical phones manufactured a year apart and tell me about how the screens don't turn icky yellow after a year anymore.

I LOVE that iPhone uses LCD. The screen is good and useful forever. Screw OLED.

This confirms OLED for iPhone 6S, it looks like a great update. 128 gb storage in space grey please for standard size iPhone for me, I could never get one of those huge Plus size phones.

A switch to OLED would be an enormous change, we would have heard much more about it if it were true. I think the 7 will feature it, but definitely not the 6S.

This is so true. Unless Apple is able to work some magic and prevent it from happening (doubtful) I am all in favor of keeping the IPS LCD.

So excited for this. Love these watch faces, can't wait to see them on the phone. Guess this means OLED? Hope the jellyfish wallpaper is available.

Love the jelly fish too. Should look amazing on the phone if true.
