So, why exactly does the S have to have an OLED display in order for this to work?
supposedly: because the blacks in oled don't emit any light, making them deeper and thus creating the effect of "nothingness". Otherwise, it would be grey, not as deep and the animation would feel cheap.
2nd: the OLED uses less battery (well in some cases) so a smaller battery can be used, still increasing battery life.

Yawn......
How long has android had Live Wallpaper????

Irrelevant. You had to use an android to see it. Not worth losing all my cross-device/app integration just to get live wallpaper.

This is why we like it when we get features like this. Doesn't matter how long someone else may have had it, now we get it too without having to lose the rest of the stuff we can't live without.

Sorry, but in the world of technology, an announcement that something "new" is coming when in fact it's already 3 years old, really isn't something to get excited about. You should have been angry the past 3 years that you DIDN'T have it. But that's life in the walled garden called Apple.

It is new. To date, iPhones have not had this feature. I'm not sure how else you would word it.

Get angry that I didn't have live wallpaper, when my device is orders of magnitude more secure, more useful, gets OS updates instantly, and does things in my environment that are impossible for an android device? Hardly.

So, yes, when something new gets added to our devices that's cool, we get happy: we still have our superior mobile platform and a cool new feature to go with it.

Is it me or does Apple seem to be going all out on this S version of the iPhone? So far we have (as rumours until Apple announce)

2GB Ram
Force Touch
12MP camera
And now the possibility of an OLED screen

womder if Apple will be updating other products as much at their September event. It will be interesting to see what happens.
OLED would be great. All of the above plus of course the A9 chip, 7000 Aluminum and improved TouchId sure is a plate-full for an S-update.

Personally, I'm much looking forward to the (rumored) totally revamped :apple:tv, with HomeKit and an App Store, as well as Skylake coming to the entire Mac line, although the latter may not happen till October.

Unlikely at this event, iPads are usually announced at a separate October event.

There was a rumor that the iPad mini 4 would be introduced next month to let the iPad Pro have the spotlight in October.

Anyway, according to Jony, OLED would be needed to make these animations look good, so it's possible OLED may be one of those new 6s features that almost came as a surprise to us. I would give it a 50 percent chance of happening since a part of me is still skeptical about it happening this year.

Plus the front FaceTime camera will get a major upgrade (5MP, 1080p, flash, panoramic selfie mode, hidden for a cleaner look) and other improvements. If all/most of these rumors come true, it will be the biggest 's' model upgrade ever.

OLED doesn't work in daylight or even slightly off-axis, so be careful what you wish for. There's a reason Apple uses the screen technology it does.

The koi pond bit must be Samsung joke, right? Moving wallpapers just look ridiculous, unless the camera does Harry Potter-like moving photos of loved ones, of course. Then moving wallpapers will look lovingly un-ridiculous.

Well, nothing has been announced per se. Just the usual rumor mill prior to a new release. Honest question, you think people should be "angry" that iOS doesn't have this trivial feature? I'd agree with you about people crowing about OLED after being told as long as we have that it is inferior (which is kinda is depending on your needs). That is a major shift. But dippy animations?? Sheesh, I agree with eoblaed, I would not trade the security and reliable updates of the Apple ecosystem for a dozen different animations or icons that wink at you. YMMV, of course.

Fun stuff for those who want to use it but I'll be turning it off. Like many other people I use my own photos for wallpaper.

Normally, my phone doesnt show the exact same image 24/7, 365. So burn in wouldnt be a problem, specially not during the typical 2 year upgrade cycle.

Because Iphones have a high resale value even at year 3 and longevity means those phones routinely are used 4-5 years, what happens after 2 years is also important unlike on most Android phones. The UI is static enough to burn in, but it is the degradation of the color accuracy that's the biggest current problem in OLEDs.

Why the **** is it an iPhone 6S feature and not an iOS feature? Since when did hardware affect which wallpapers you could have? This is low even for Apple. Well, it's not like it matters anyway since it's not an important feature.

I only hope this isn't one of the big selling points of the new phone. I fear that they might run out of things to add to it.

As a 6 Plus owner, I agree - silly to make it 6S-exclusive through the software when the hardware is very capable. So what if the blacks aren't as deep and it doesn't look 'as good' as OLED...

But I bet they do it anyway... :(

It would be a great update for sure, I wasn't planning on updating until the iPhone 7 because I'm happy with my 6 Plus, but if all these features are confirmed I might be very tempted to upgrade. Also the Apple TV will be great to see what they do with it! It hasn't had an update in a while. The one thing I'm really looking forward too the most tho is the iPad Pro, but that will likely come in a October event.

Animated wallpaper is pointless.

It's just "noise" on the screen. A cognitive-overload-inducing distraction when you're trying to use your phone. The original iPhone did it best: plain black background for all.

I guess the marketing guys wanted it to grab your attention in a store display or something? That's the only "useful" function I can discern.

New feature vs. new concept. And I don't know that I'd get particularly "angry" about not having live wallpapers in this garden, personally.

Also, would this mean that there's a chance for an OLED display, since Jony Ive has previously said that the "magic" from these Apple Watch animated wallpapers were only possible with that technology? If it does, I hope they go 1080p.

They change their minds from time to time.
Remember the 4'' was the perfect size?
I'd like a new screen but I'm afraid the only change in 6S will be force touch. Maybe next year they'll move to a completely new technology for the display and this time we'll have "not so magic" wallpapers

I tried the animated wallpaper for the home screen once and is really annoying because you are focusing on the icons and the best background is the one who can give you a good contrast.
It may work better on the lock screen but is would be the least interesting feature of the new phone.
I'd rather have a random lock screen with pics from the camera roll.
