iPhone 6s turning off at 10-20%

My 6s just started doing this. I checked the Battery Life app I have on my phone, and it showed that my battery now has just 23% of its original capacity (400 mAh vs 1715). The app shows my capacity history as well, and this drop in capacity started sometime after October 1. Up to that point, my battery capacity had been at 93%. This can't be good.

I went to the Apple Store today, had my diagnosis done, and am in line for a battery once they become available.

Like others, I don't believe the cause is really the battery (or, at least not solely the battery). I can always get my phone to shut down within 1 hour of usage even if I start with a full charge.

Here is my test scenario:

1) Start with a fully charged 6S (purchased just over a year ago, usually charged once a day (overnight)).
2) Go outside. Go for a walk.
3) While walking, listen to podcasts using Overcast. read Twitter using Twitterrific. Phone will shut off with no "low battery" warning within one hour 100% of the time. I don't run. I walk. I complete just under 3 miles usually on this one hour walk.

The problem started THE DAY I loaded iOS 10.0. I've taken the same walk 5 to 7 days a week (when in town) for the last three years. I never had this problem before loading iOS 10.0.

If I attempt to power up the phone, I get the "battery is drained, please plug it in" image. Once I plug it it, the phone will boot after 10-30 seconds. The phone will display approximately the same remaining battery percentage it showed when it died. I have had phone die with as much as 65% battery remaining. It will almost always die before it gets down to 40%.

Something about this combination is a problem. I can listen to Overcast without running the screen for an hour without issue. Having the screen lit seems to be related.

I can walk on a treadmill for an hour using the same Apps, but on WiFi, and the battery will drain normally. If I get to 20% I will get the low battery message.

I can drive in my car for an hour (so not on WiFi) using the same apps, and battery will drain normally. If I get to 20% I will get the low battery message.

Just some additional data points. I will be very surprised (but pleased) if the problem goes away with a new battery.

I had this issue with earlier versions of iOS to be fair. I was hoping upgrading to ios10 that it would fix the issue, it didn't!!

I'm going again this Saturday to drop off my phone to get the battery replaced. I hope this time they actually have some. If not, I'm mailing it in. Anybody have any luck getting their's replaced in store? And do they let you drop it off? I've got to be at my brother's house so I was going to pick it up after I got finished at my brother's.

Ok, so i've had my repaired 6s for a little over a week now.

Apple not only replaced the Battery, but the Logic Board as well.

I can now go out in the cold without my phone shutting off.

I had my battery replaced on Friday afternoon. On Saturday, I went for my "battery killer" walk.

- Start with 100% charge
- Walk outside for an hour
- Listen to Podcasts in Overcast
- Read Twitter in Twitterrific

Since upgrading to iOS 10 on this 6s, it would fail within that hour EVERY TIME. Usually with battery percentages of 50-65% remaining.

I was able to go for an hour, with battery down to 53% without the phone turning off. I repeated the test Sunday. No failures.

So - for me anyway, the replacement battery fixed the issue!

My daughter and I both had our 6s batteries replaced about a week ago. Since then we've been able to use the full range of the charge from 100% down to 1% without a problem. The battery swap seems to have corrected the problems we were having.

Did you phones have screen protector and will they need to come off to do battery replacement?

Had my battery replaced and they left my screen protector on

Was it glass or plastic? Mine is plastic, i was afraid whatever the tool they used maybe similar to iFixit tool with suction cup to grab the LCD screen may yank off screen protector.

just got my iphone 6s replaced at the apple store for battery replacement. dropped off my phone and they told me to come back in 2 hours, when i arrived they said they couldn't replace the battery and that they were going to give me a new device but i had to wait for a "code" from Apple which took another 40 mins. In the end, I got a brand new iphone 6s. thanks apple

brand new sealed retail box, or white box refurbished?

brand new sealed retail box, or white box refurbished?

im not sure, they didn't give me any box or accessories so its most likely refurbished. the exterior of the phone was definitely brand new in terms of aesthetics, not sure about the internals. However, i logged onto my Apple ID and this new iphone 6s is covered by all the support with a 1 year warranty so if anything happens, i can still get it replaced.

i had the same problem with my 6s+. My device was 15 days out of warranty but a nice sup on the apple care hotline told me they will change my battery for free. i just received notice that a replacement device is on the way.

Thank you for the note about your return box! It seems kind of silly to mail back all phones in a 6s Plus size box....especially since when they return it to you it comes in a white box properly sized for your 6s..... Do let me know if they replace your screen as well....or if it is just the battery and logic board.

I actually had a really weird experience. Mailed my phone in over Thanksgiving. After waiting about half a week I received an e-mail that my repair request had been cancelled! Then the next day I received another e-mail that Apple had received my phone and would begin repairs. Now this second e-mail also completely changed my repair ID number and repair initiated date. So it would appear Apple canceled my first repair set up after exactly 10 days from when I requested the repair and gave me a new repair ID with a new initiated date. The annoying thing is I know from the fedex tracking that Apple received my phone 3 whole days before they cancelled the repair and 4 whole days before they e-mailed me that they got my phone! No idea what they were doing for those 4 days.

Anyway, I did do an online chat with Apple support about this. After the support staff spent 15 minutes contacting "senior technicians" he finally gave up and told me he has no idea why the original repair request was cancelled or why I was issued a new repair order with a new start date. Very frustrating. I have submitted lots of Macs for repair, but this is my first iPhone repair. It has not been as pleasant as I am used to from Apple.

I also never received a final e-mail when my repair was completed, with return tracking information. The phone just showed up today at my door...

I got mine back and only the battery was replaced.

Had my battery replaced at my local Apple Store. I have AppleCare+ on my phone but they just replaced the battery, not the whole thing. But honestly, that was preferable. I'd prefer not to have to reload everything from backup. Plus it would have messed up the two-factor authorizations I use on the Google, Symantec VIP and Microsoft authenticator apps.

It's not only iPhone 6, 6S or 7, iPhone 5S too. It just turns off itself at 20-30 % battery and shows a connect to charger symbol. If you plug it to computer, it comes back to life with the remaining battery level. What a mess.

I will put that down to usage. Generally if you've gone through over 400 charge cycles then the battery works at less than 80% capacity.

I can't get my Apple Store to answer their phone! I've been waiting almost 2 weeks for a new battery.

Today, I got my battery problem addressed by Apple. Overall I am satisfied that Apple was willing to come forward and address an issue; however, I am totally not happy how this actual process was handled as it took close to 5 hours total to get the issue resolved.

- took almost an hour via chat to run the diagnostics and validate serial, information and schedule an appointment for a repair for the phone
- took an hour at the store (with the appointment) only to find out that they are out of batteries and one had to be ordered for my phone
- last night I got a call from Apple that the battery is in, and the service is done on first come, first serve basis - they would not make an appointment for this. I decided to drop off the phone right at the opening of the store - 10:00 am. Was promised 1:45 hrs. I decided to leave (got better things to do than roam mindlessly Apple store for that long). Came at around 12:00 PM and it turn out that the phone was ready, but after a close inspection, the screen was busted. It seemed like someone used a flat head screwdriver to pry the screen off the base of the phone around the edge where the lightning port and the TouchId are. They admitted to their fault and decided to replace the screen which took about 40-45 minutes but at that point, I waited inside the store.

The only positive out of this is that I got a new screen (mine was in a perfect condition anyway) and a new battery. One thing that I noticed about the battery is that the coconut battery reports 1743 mAh capacity vs the designated 1715 mA. Is Apple replacing the batteries with a tiny bit higher capacity or this has always been like this?

Can I ask something, I am about to get the phone checked up in order to get the battery replaced.

Can anyone tell me if while checking the phone they will erase the data from it? I am asking because if they decide to get my battery replaced, they informed me that replacement part will take a lot of time to arrive where i am (like weeks...) and i want to get my phone back so i can use it until the replacement part arrives and i get the repair done.

So, simply put: do they erase the data in your phone while they check it up?

So if your serial number qualifies, will apple still only do it if you fail the 80 % benchmark?
That's stupid because the unexpected shutdown can still occur at any capacity.

Anyone know Wich is the shipping method they use to ship the battery? Actually I'm in Dominican Republic, and I had to use a certified Apple reseller to do the Job, but they need to keep my phone for 3 week's because they need to request the battery to Apple.

This is my first week without the phone, and I'm desperate.

My phone wasn't really shutting done unexpectedly at any given %, but to eliminate unnecessary bs from the Apple side I told them that it was. My actual problem was that my battery would lose % of charges in a blink of an eye. Usually by noon, I would be at around 45-50% if I was lucky. Right now, after the swap, I am at 85%. So far I am very happy with the outcome.

On the other side, my wife's iPhone would shut down at random %, but that was handled several months ago before Apple even announced this battery replacement process. Her phone was replaced with a new one (refurb of course) which worked out better as she had a small blemish on a screen and her A9 was made by Samsung, but ended up with TSMC :)
