It is what it is. If the store's busy (which it very often is) we always get denied lunch breaks. It sucks but that's the way it is. I worked over 10 hours yesterday without one.

Do you get any break at all?

My door bell isn't working so I've had to put tape over it. My deliveries never come early.

My last and only UK mail delivery was a complete disaster. The tracking information said that the delivery had been delayed and would arrive the next day. Then about an hour later a received a text with a time slot for the next day and the website was still saying the next day. However I thought that it was odd that I was receiving the time slot a day in advance so I camped out by the window in the time slot only to see the U.K. Mail van drive off up the street. 20 minutes later I received a call from the driver saying he couldn't find my place. I had to give him directions. I'm not ageist but the guy was almost 70 and was heavily struggling with my parcel from the van to my door. He asked if I (small female) wanted help to carry the box up the stairs and I declined.

I hope they can find my place today as I noticed that for some reason Apple have my old mobile number (6 years ago) on my delivery details yet they have my new number on the billing details. I called Apple yesterday and they reckon than it has been updated and that UK Mail will have the new number.

I wish it was being delivered by DPD.

I was going to say at least they called you and managed to get the parcel delivered, but if they don't have an up to date number that might not work! Hey, maybe it will be that old guy again and he'll know where to go. I'd hope an iPhone package wouldn't be too heavy.

I always hope for DPD.

We're supposed to get half hour lunch break if working over 6 & 1/2 hours shift. We're allowed to take it one-by-one when there's no customers waiting but if there's people waiting everyone will be denied taking it. And that means if it's busy all day there'll no lunch breaks for anyone. It's guaranteed to be busy today so the manager just told everyone to realistically expect no lunch break and just take a few bites every time you go into the store room.

I just hope that Apple were able to update my mobile number with UK Mail as they said they did yesterday.

That's illegal.

I imagine the higher ups set unrealistic expectations for stores meaning they have no choice but to have people working non-stop. You have the right to a (I think) 20 minute uninterrupted break when you work over 6 hour though.

I currently work in a store for one of the major UK networks. I'm super lucky and got the day off today just by the luck of the rota. Just want to shout out to all my brethren working in retail stores today, it's gonna be crazy. Our store is opening earlier than usual, the people there will realistically be there for at least 12 hours and we've already been warned that there will strictly be no lunch breaks allowed all day. A very long day work day indeed! I'm relieved to have avoided that bullet!

Hope everyone here gets the phones they want! Good luck everyone.

Indeed. I'm sure everyone here is always super polite, but today would be good day to extra courteous to store staff, call-centre people and delivery drivers who are all busting their ass for our collective benefit.

Everyone moans about "this carrier sucks" or "that courier always eff it up", but it's not the person who's having to front it out with you who makes the decisions & cuts the corners - give 'em the benefit of the doubt today.

Quote from gov.uk .... Rest breaks at work. Workers have the right to one uninterrupted 20 minute rest breakduring their working day, if they work more than 6 hours a day. This could be a tea or lunch break. The break doesn't have to be paid - it depends on their employment contract.

That is correct.

I believe that you are legally entitled to a minimum of 20 minutes uninterrupted break per day if working over 6.5 hours.

You may be entitled to more depending on your employment contract.

Yeah, it probably is. But not really any choice in the matter. Manager warmed everyone that if anyone dares ask for a lunch break on iPhone launch day he'll respond with 'very colourful language'.

It you really press the issue it's quite likely you'd be seeing a P45 in the post before long.

Which is also illegal...

This then would be unfair dismissal and you could sue.

Although I understand why they do it, i think it's bad. I worked two hectic 7am-8pm days last week. No lunch break. But I love what I do so I didn't mind. (Sneaked out to pre order the new iPhone though :))

Have you got any of that in writing? UK law states that you should get 20 minutes once every six hours. Would you mind naming the network, just so I can avoid using them in future?

I think a lot of worker rights are being ignored in the retail sector but it seems to be common practice across the board. Employers know how to play the system in their favuor.

Anyway, I'm actively looking to change jobs. Working in retail was never what I wanted to do in the first place is just a placeholder until I can land a degree-level scientific research job! I'll get there eventually! :)

Yep very illegal. People who put up with stuff like this annoy me!
Nothing against you but some people/managers/business try to take the p**s and the staff just let it happen because they don't know the law.

I'm lucky and my other half is a lawyer and I've learned so much from her.
It is illegal to deny a break when working that long and you can take that very seriously.

Anyway, back on topic, iPhone 7 launch day is here!!!!!!

Sorry to hear about those working conditions. However, they don't sound the norm and granted it's for a launch.

However, there's no way on earth that I'd work for an organisation that treated people in that way.
[doublepost=1474007503][/doublepost]Just makes me think about all the poor souls working in retail today dealing with stock issues, failed credit checks and abuse in some cases!

You need to check the Health and Safety at work regs.

See what happens when the majority of a thread doesn't get their iPhone on launch day!!!!

We're discussing employment law.

Last year we were discussing where our drivers live, their break times, the colour of their socks.

As someone who's not getting a phone today. I can say this day is dead to me :(

Enjoy your iPhones those who are getting them

As a manager for the largest electronics retailer in the country, I agree with this. You should get at minimum what you are entitled to and if you challenge your manager with the facts and impacts of their actions, they will soon change their decision.

Anyway, iPhone launch day!

I'll be setting off to my local CPW in half an hour to grab some breakfast and collect my iPhone.

Anyway, I don't intend to clog this thread up with my personal misery. Sorry everyone.

Let's have fun and enjoy our shiny new phones :)

(sorry to hear that sparkie, hope you can get yours soon)
