Because waiting a couple more days isn't going to make any difference. It's a waste of time, unless you don't value it.
not to you or me but it's their time to waste :)
Its sort of an event, maybe the camaraderie etc
You can watch sports on tv but people pay money to get there, crazy money to get in, obscene fees for
drinks and snacks...heh then theres golf...

To be honest, I don't get it either. But, who are we to criticise someone else for doing something they enjoy just because we can't see the point/value. I mean, I'm sure there are people queuing for hours sometimes days for other big occasions like sports or music events.

The difference is that when they do it for sports or music events, your choice is either line up or miss the event. These people will waste 2 days sitting in line to get the exact same phone 1-2 weeks sooner.

The reason this _used_ to happen is because you'd say something like "I want one of those really bad, but I don't want to wait in line :-(" And if you didn't wait, you didn't know when you'd be able to get one. And on top of that the competition wasn't very good. So, there was some coolness factor to waiting.

At this point there are millions if iPhones to go around, and if you don't wait in line, you'll get one. It might be 45 days from now, but you'll get one.

I think the people are standing outside the Apple Store are just doing it out of tradition. There is no other logically reason for people to keep standing in long lines for the new iPhone anymore.

I know a couple people that do this every year. I think it's simply become a sort of ritual. Most of them look forward to it and have a good time with the other people waiting. I think it's ridiculous and between a job and kids can't imagine the time.

I do think at this point it's become a little less about MUST HAVE and a little more ritualistic.

The condescending posts here are pretty amazing. Who cares if people do this stuff? Is it somehow a bigger waste of time than any other leisure activity? Is going to the beach or playing video games somehow a "better" use of time than socializing with other people usually outdoors? I think it's silly, but that's simply because I wouldn't do it.

I'm seriously considering getting a 7, but I want to see the Jet Black and Black in person first.

That's because of the "free" upgrade when you turn in your 6S (and maybe 6?). Rumor has it that Apple is actually behind the trade-in deal, which if true, is jaw-dropping to me.
Perhaps they want to sell refurbished iPhone 6 in China or emerging markets.

All about marketing !!! These people get pay $10/hr, 10x2days = $480, not bad for someone has no job.

I get the idea of standing in line for tickets to an event, where being there means you will get better seats or something. But just to get the same thing everybody else will have, without the bug fixes that will be issued in the ensuing days? That's just plain stupid.

I could understand it earlier but this year?..
Guys, there's no headphone jack, 3 years old design(!) and camera became worse despite what Apple claims.

Maybe they're getting paid to hold somebody's place in line.
Getting paid by Tim Cook :D

Unemployed people shouldn't be spending that kind of money on a phone.
Unemployed people that camp out a few days to wait for the latest iGadget. Aren't known for their critical thinking skills. What's scarier is they can vote and have the free time to do so.

Apple should do the country a favor and set the launch day a day after the elections every year. That way they'll be stuck waiting in line.

Has it ever occurred to you that they may be doing it for more than just a phone? They enjoy the action of waiting in line, the community aspect of it - getting to know people. I've never done it but I can see how people may enjoy it. There may even be doing it out of respect and love for Steve Jobs.

Man has it really been 5 years since he died? Unbelievable how quickly the time has gone!

When the site says 2-3 weeks. Is it talking about 2-3 weeks after the release, or 2-3 weeks after ordering?

To all the people who don't understand this, you do realize that a lot of this is mafia related, especially various Asian mafias, right? They pay FOBs or maybe not to stand in line to get these phones and take them back to China or wherever and sell them. It's a huge problem in NYC. You see them come out of the store, approach a car with tinted windows, drop off the phones, and get back in line.
