Asking for the premium specs without accounting for the inevitable tradeoff is going to be a lose/lose unless you value that one spec to the exclusion of all else.
So making the iPhone thinner at the cost of battery life is beneficial, how? Having the camera stick out like a soar thumb is beneficial, how? Customers have been saying for years that the iPhone is thin enough and the battery life could be extended by have it thicker and have the camera flush with the rear. Think Apple cares? It can be done.

If you can power a 326ppi screen with the iPhone 4 in 2010 whats the downfall of a 400+ ppi screen in 2016?!?

It's probably not a night and day difference like going from non-retina to retina. And in the end, it is to each his/her own.

Retina is just a number apple came up with. The difference in going from to retina from non retina would depend on what the resolution is you are coming from. For example:

iPhone 6 Plus "retina" is 1,920 x 1,080 and 401 ppi. If you changed from something close to that it would not be night and day difference, a low resolution device yes.

Here is an article from cult of mac from 2012. Yes, it's old but it shows that retina is just a number decided on by apple and given the name retina. Nothing magical about it at all.

"So far, so good. There’s only one problem: Steve Jobs said that the human eye, viewing a display from 12 inches away, can’t discern individual pixels if the density is over 300 pixels per inch. Except that this “magic” number is wrong. The real number is closer to nine hundred pixels per inch. Apple’s Retina displays are only about 33% of the way there."

I have the 6s plus and I am very happy with the display, I'm just saying retina really does not mean anything. It's just a marketing tool to convince people it's the perfect resolution when it's actually not. Good? Yes, but again nothing magical about it. Something the marketing genius jobs came up with.

I really don't know why there is so much excitement about color when most of us put our phones in cases. Unless the case is clear, the color will only be a memory once it goes into its case.

Apple is so funny. They hold off making an all black phone for 5 years and then market the hell out of it and make people want it.

They knew people didn't want "Space Gray", but why not wait until now to introduce an all black phone since this is the 3rd and final year of them using the same form factor.

Can't believe the 4S was the last truly all black iPhone (minus the silver border).

Anybody actually getting their Jet Black on launch day? I got my email confirmation at 12:06 am for preorder and it says delivery in 1-2 weeks. But my card just got charged and shipping info changed to preparing for shipment instead of order processing so I'm hoping I get it early.

Eh, there was only one new feature in 7: Dual camera and that's on + model.

If iPhone 8 has dual camera ppl switch back to smaller screens.

Sadly Apple wasn't able to afford to research the market, conduct focus groups, or poll customers beforehand to get an idea of demand.

A fledgling company struggling to make a profit, one day Apple hopes to be able to afford those kinds of preparations.

So they just guessed at how many of each model to build.
Well, they probably based it off previous demand (6s and 6s Plus and the past). They wouldn't tell anyone about the new devices before they announced them in an event, so it makes sense they wouldn't have data as it pertains directly to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

As the article states, this is the first year where the Plus outsold the standard model. So even if they had it set for 55% standard and 45% Plus, they'd be off by 10% on each side, which would likely be millions of devices.

Apple will "magically" make it fit in the 4.7-inch model next year, or hold-off for another year. People are blind that Apple is a marketing company first.

Cost, power, weight, size, heat, frame rate, reliability, additional features... There's is always a tradeoff.

Yes, I think Apple cares. I think it was a closely examined decision. I think all of them are. The iPhone isn't an accident, it's the borders drawn after years of trench warfare.

There are essentially 3 iPhone designs on the market at any given time, and Apple typically has the top two highest selling phones and all of the industry profit. For everyone who might agree with you on wanting to change one spec, they almost certainly don't all agree on what they'd like to have changed to achieve it.

I'm not arguing the merit of any one design feature, my point is quite simply that to pick one spec and say "asking to change it is a win/win" without considering the impact it has on the overall design is wrong.

Can't blame people when they choose 128gb. 32gb is better than 16gb, but it's tougher to manage without a SD slot when you take 4K videos.

Well, I know "retina" is a marketing term. But still, I was referring to the update from iPhone 3GS, 3.5" screen at 163dpi to the iPhone 4, same 3.5" screen, but at 326 dpi.

That change right then and there was a huge upgrade. Going from a 6/6s/7 at 326dpi to a 6/6s/7 plus at 401dpi is not as drastic a change.

Personally, it comes down the screen size preference more than "moar piksels!" ;-)

Edit: oh and the dual cameras.

There is nothing wrong with the display. You cant even see the pixels from a reasonable viewing distance and the colors are more accurate than any phone on the market.
But imagine the shame of being seen using a phone with less than a 1080p display! Friends will stop inviting you places, out of concern that you and your less-than-1080p phone will reflect poorly on them.

(Yeah, the "how many pixels" criteria left the "does the display look good" boat a long time ago. Specs-for-specs-sake is dumb, Apple displays continue to look fabulous.)

Next thing I know you are probably are going to tell me that you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 4K.

That depends on the screen size, viewing distance, content being displayed, and dare I say, the viewers eyesight. I'm getting older, so maybe thats why i find my iPhone 6 screen more than acceptable.

I'm rather incensed that the Jet Black is only available in the $100 upgrade 128GB model. This is the most basic color choice and should be available as standard in all models, not as a premium. Based on the Apple Store photos, "Black" is really more gray.

Incensed! Never mind that it is a finish that has additional manufacturing steps, probably costs more to produce, and obviously is in short supply. I want my black iPhone right now damn it!

Wow. I didn't realize how much of a minority my color of choice (gold) was.
It's probably only because it's the oldest color (besides silver, which many people think is less flashy or something). I did silver 5s, space gray 6 Plus then gold 6s. So now I'm going jet black.

Apple can't randomly increase the resolution cause it'll screw the apps. The only way they can increase resolution of iPhone 6/7 (non plus) is to multiple it by 2. That would probably eat too much power now cause it will be a 1500x2668 display. One day when they are ready it may happen. As of now it's already great and the difference will be barely noticeable by the most people.

If the iPhone 7 was thicker where the camera is flush to the rear and battery life increased even more that would be a trade-off, how? The last few generations of iPhones have been light enough, if there was added weight for a greater increase in battery life customers would not complain. Compromise right. Apple has never been shy to increase the thickness of its products, i.e. AW2, iPad 3, etc. Adding a WCG display is sure to consume additional battery life. Once Apple introduces a higher dpi/resolution display in the same thin package with the same battery life or better, your argument will then be advancement in technology. Do not fall for the marketing BS. Granted Apple makes decent phones, however the premium cost cannot be justified, people see it as a fashion accessory or is that another event to release new watch bands.

if they would have started at 64gb... i would have given apple $100 more for the plus. apple has a plan here to force users to buy the 128gb but their greed is going to come back to bite them. they could make more money off of me since i can only afford one upgrade: storage size or screen size and camera and i have to choose storage size. greedy apple lol sucks for them.
[doublepost=1473995269][/doublepost]in case someone misunderstood... the extra storage is maybe $10 more for apple while the camera parts are much more expensive.
