I'm sure there are plenty of people who like the phablet sizes. The sales seem to bear that out. However my iPhone 6 is my last iPhone until they update the 4" iPhone. Last year's SE is nice but I won't pay full price for last year's tech. I think people underestimate the appeal and need for the 4" phone.

Sure, they're rarer nowadays as companies are searching for a higher average selling price. But I think, and sales of the SE bear this out, that there is plenty of market for the smaller form factor. Just don't make it crippled in functionality.

SE has iPhone 6 hardware (for the most part), and it is cheaper than 6, cheapest iPhone.

I carry the 6+ in my front jeans pocket with no problems. I don't have what you'd call a rugged case, but it's at least as thick as a rugged case would be. I use the Book Book from 12 South.

My Jeans are Levis with a 32-inch waist.

My back pockets are empty, since I don't need to carry a separate wallet.

This! I can't for the life of me understand why people say they don't have enough room in their pockets for a phone - my butt and thighs are hardly skinny and I can fit my phone easily in both front and back pockets.

I used to love this case on my 6 plus. Only issue I had was loosing two credit cards because the were to loose in the slots.
Now I have the regular 7 with a battery case because I had to buy one really quickly when there was a short supply and miss the BookBook and the screen one the Plus...

Or, more correctly, iPhone 6 plus/6s plus sold so poorly, that things are going in a better way for 7 plus.

There's not really a story here. Clutching at straws, Apple?

This is probably explained by the majority of people being on a 2 year upgrade cycle. Seeing as the Plus was first introduced with the 6, most people were apprehensive about the larger size and so got the smaller version. Having had 2 years to see/use a Plus variant, I'm sure a lot more people sprung for the Plus for this upgrade.

I went from iPhone 6 Plus to iPhone 7. I would never go back to such a huge phone.

I too went from a 6+ to 7. I've had my 7 for 4 days now and i'm really liking the size of it.
Will I ever go back to the Plus? Maybe, but at the moment I'm loving my 7.

Wasn't there news that iphone 7 sales were not matching expectations?
Even my carrier is sending me special offers on iphone 7 (not that I have anything against the iphone7 or the +)

I've been seeing a lot more people with the plus. Since the original it feels too small for me now! Maybe if iOS could offer something different it would be better

Might the latest quarter "record sales" have something to do with the Samsung Battery debacle? Not being a downer, just haven't seen this pointed out anywhere.
That's my thinking, they were able to enjoy a competitor's misstep (if you call exploding phones a misstep)

It's been pointed out literally everywhere and debunked, even if Samsung's bad is always Apple's good.

Tim how about doing something with the larger screen?

i swear the apple software team is on vacation.

we have **** mail app, siri, calendar, and ios that doesn't offer anything more other than rotating icons in landscape

but open that app then it goes back to portrait .

I'll be the 1st to say this but Steve Jobs would have never let that happen.
The mail app is really good in landscape mode. All mails listed to the left and the currently open one to the right. What more do you want? It's the exact same layout on the Mac desktop app. The calendar app is very good as well. I see an overview of my day to the left and current appointments to the right. Siri needs some work though.

I thought you don't need more than 3.5"? Guess all the apologists are wrong again.

How do you mean?

So some people happen to prefer a smaller screen....

And now, lots of people are buying phones with larger screens....

And you are, what? Assuming that anyone who bought a phone with a larger screen, must also be one of the people who previously said that they preferred a smaller screen?

And what is it with this term "apologist" anyway? Why can't you just accept that its a legitimate preference for some, rather than this bizarre notion that they are somehow apologising for something or someone?

As it happens, my preference is for a smaller screen, and am pretty happy with my SE. The plus models are definitely larger than I would like, as I'd struggle to use it with one hand.

And even if people are buying more of the larger phones these days, that doesn't necessarily mean they are buying them because of the larger screen - for many the better camera might be the big draw, and the larger screen is simply a trade off they are prepared to make.

Or maybe even - perish the thought! - some people just, you know, change their minds. It is allowed after all.

Or have you never - ever! - changed your mind about anything?

Apple does need to update the screen resolutions. It is time Apple goes to a 1080 display on its 4.7" displays.

Love my 7 Plus. I surprisingly adjusted well to the size of it. But It's worth the advantages over the 4.7 variant with the dual camera and 1080 P screen.

I feel your pain brother. I'd pay the same price they charge the plus for the 4.7"... if it packed the same features

True. I bought 7+, too 'cause after 1+1 I couldn't stand the low resolution display on 7. It's obsolete.

Surprisingly, it's easier for me to use 7+ with one hand than smaller 1+1.

I keep thinking I could get a Plus model, really do, but then I use one and I'm not so sure again... I do like my 6S more but just wish it had a higher res screen etc..

I didn't get used to the size of the Plus despite having iPhone 6 and 6s until I spent a few months on Android phones. Even those weren't as big as the iPhone 7 Plus. But they're not easy on the pockets like the SE and IPhone 7 can be.

I'm okay with it for the winter and fall but I know when the warm weather gets here I'm taking the sim out of my Samsung Galaxy S7 and putting it back into my SE. I'll be back to exclusive iOS use then, but I can't lug this 7 Plus brick around when I'm working outside.

I think that's Tim's evil strategy. Sell us on the brick but make sure we need either an SE and/or the Apple Watch, too.

There were stories here on MacRumors about that, but I think they were based on the word of some analyst, and not on official word from Apple.

(There were probably also stories about Tim Cook saying he was "very pleased" with iPhone 7 sales, but those would be dismissed, because how would Tim Cook know better than some analyst?)

Love it when people use news sites and complain when they read news.

"This is obvious", "I already knew this", "nobody cares", "Tim is lying" etc.

**** off then! Hahaha ;)

iPhone 7 Plus is the most popular plus ever because it had a great camera (for a phone). Sales outpaced the 4.7 7 because that model didn't give 4.7" customers any real reason to upgrade.

The questions that have not been answered are:

1. will Apple continue this feature discrepancy. If so...
2. will 4.7" users feel left out enough to convert to the Plus. (I know I was on the fence but stuck with the 7 because I just don't want to two-hand it.)
3. Also unknown if the 4.7" would have equally sold well with a better camera but also a price bump.

Personally, I think Apple, just like it tossed sales away when it initially discontinued the 4" model, is also missing sales by separating models by size, not features between the 4.7 and Plus model. It makes no sense to me to only pack in features in the largest screen model leaving the others thread bare. There is a market for 4.7" size with an optical zoom camera. Apple does the same thing with the 21" iMac. I don't know why. Some people want all the features but not a ginormous screen.

1. Yes, they will and will make it even further. This allows them to break from the old price points of the iPhone and establish higher ones for a higher average selling price. They hope it's distinct enough that people will choose to go big and gain a higher margin.
2. Some will but I doubt it, especially if they maintain the 4" phone size. Typical pricing strategy for a 3 model approach: small is bargain with low margin, big is high margin but fewer sales, medium is big margin with most sales -- capturing sales of people who want to stretch from small or not quite big.
3. Probably. Question is how much the camera actually makes a difference to the average buyer. My guess is not a lot.

Apples marketing is also almost always the Plus model now. You would think there is no 4.7 inch model.

Good for you. It's a massive phone that I never felt entirely comfortable using.
I had the 6 Plus but went back to the regular 6S. I like the big screen but the overall phone's size gets annoying. Im waiting for the iPhone 8/X plus and hopefully smaller form factor.

No, it has iPhone 6s hardware for the most part, a phone Apple is still selling quite well, which the 7 is not much different from. But it really depends on your needs doesn't it? The 5s display and front facing camera are sufficient for me, especially since I don't take a lot of selfies.

Love my iPhone 7 Plus pretty much, can't wait the rumors coming iPhone fit 5.8" screen in same body size of iPhone 7 Plus.
