Presumably this means iOS 10 will come in at 16GB, so they had no choice but to bump the base iPhone to 32GB.
Meanwhile in 2007, nearly a decade ago, the iPhone had 8GB*, much smaller OS footprint, and no installable apps. My how little we have progressed....
*Yes there was a 4GB iPhone initially, but it was discontinued as most people chose the 8GB model. But even that 4GB model, compared to today's usage patterns, had much more storage than a 16GB iPhone 6S Plus.
